Despite their comical appearance, I’ve seen a few of their time sheets and the logs of the runs they did. These things were no joke. Powerful (for their size), tough, and light makes for a formidable combination, who would’ve thought?

As a child of about 8 or 9 I remember seeing one of the last two surviving Dukedogs, sitting on the centre road at the old Aberystwyth station. They've fascinated me ever since. About twenty minutes later I met one of the Vale of Rheidol engines - having never seen an outside framed engine (I grew up beside the Trent Valley main line) I was profoundly puzzled as to why neither engine had any wheels..... So there is a 50/50 chance that the engine I saw is the preserved example.

The GWR directors were probably less unhappy than you might think, because the Great Depression was on, and Collet wrung new life out of old parts. Rather the way the Great Northern Railway (U.S.A.) converted old Mallet locos into the heaviest 2-8-2 locomotives ever built, the Class O-8, also in the 1930s. Hard times call for desperate measures.
@carribob1992
@carribob1992 3 года назад

@quillmaurer6563
@quillmaurer6563 3 года назад
We think of this now, but at the time they were seen as obsolete. The modern version might be naming a fleet of rusty old SD40-2s after company directors, who would rather their names be put on flashy new ES44C4s or something. SD40-2s are still great locomotives after all these years, but don't have the prestige of modernness.
@johnjephcote7636
@johnjephcote7636 3 года назад
I remember them going out of service but I never managed to see one in BR use. I was too young to see the last of the Bird class Bulldogs. It had never occurred to me that there was any intent to have 'un petit rire' at the directors...I'm so innocent and I knew that loco naming was very quirky to the point of insensitiveness anyway. Take Bongo and Pretty Polly for a start and the GWR once had an absorbed loco carrying the name 'Terrible'.
@nicholasalexander4743
@nicholasalexander4743 2 года назад
Bongo is the sixth locomotive of the LNER B1 'Antelope' class, 36 of which were named after 35 different species of antelope. Pretty Polly, a Gresley A1 of April 1925, carried the name of the winner of the 1904 St. Leger stakes at Doncaster, as part of the LNER tradition of naming top-link engines after classic race-winning horses. No fewer than eight Royal Navy warships have borne the name 'HMS Terrible', in the years between 1694-1947. The GWR 'Atbara' class locomotive of that name refers to the second of the two 'Powerful' class protected cruisers built in the 1890s. The first cruiser, 'Powerful', also gave its name to a locomotive of this class. I'm at quite a loss to see why any of these categories of locomotive names should be considered either quirky or insensitive.

Kinda reminds me of the sileightie. Back in the 90s in Japan drifting/street racing was very popular and a popular choice was the Nissan 180sx. However if said owner of 180sx were to somehow damage the front end he would be left with a couple of choices of how to repair it. They could buy the 180sx front end but the 180sx happened to share the same chassis as the S13 silva which happened to be cheaper. Due to this it wasn't uncommon to see a 180sx with a S13 front end and such examples of these cars were nicknamed sileightie's a combination of the names Silvia and 180sx.

The irony is, these double-framed engines dating back to the Dean era in design terms, had very strong frames whereas Churchward's more modern locomotives did not- and this problem was not rectified until Hawksworth created the "Modified Hall" class in 1944. Churchward's excellent 4300 moguls were already being used as donors for the Grange class in 1936 and a little later, the Manors as presumably, the frames were badly fatigued. Using these sturdy frames and attaching a lighter pre-Churchward boiler was a good idea and the fact they lasted until 1960 proves it even if they looked antiquated.

Just goes to show that in the 1930s the GWR must have been quite short of cash. The relatively impoverished Highland Railway managed to build four 4-6-0 designs up to 1923 (excluding th the larger and heavier Rivers) which would probably have been within the weight limitations of the Cambrian lines. With a larger boiler and three driving axles a locomotive this size would have been a very decent power upgrade on the Dukedogs. It was not many more years before the GWR itself built the similarly-sized Grange and Manor lightweight 4-6-0s for its secondary lines.
