I actually have sheets of paper from when my little sister and I tried doing this as kids. There's "to expose the tootsie roll" and "remove all candy" numbers. Numbers to expose the tootsie were around 320-350 Numbers to remove all exceeded 1k
~300 based on measurements with a saliva coated tongue approximately 1 sec between licks allowing for liquefaction of the surface and concentrated licking on one side of the tootsy pop, I was thorough at age 12.
+SciFri But at what temperature, because I'm sure it would matter if a person licks a lollypop in Alaska in winter, compared to someone licking one in Australia, as sugar temperature would need to be a constant wouldn't it? Also what about impurities in the lolly mixture causing the lolly material to dissolve at a slightly different rate. What about tongue size and tongue surface texture? So many controls to get right to achieve a result worthy of science.
+Spacecookie if enough randomised people would do this experiement, we could assume the variables to normalise. :) (that is a very big number of participants, and i doub't that they are actually random. (certain people will rather try this) ) but still there is a chance to get it somewhat right^^.
Not without a decent amount of force, these glass particles are gently suspended in very gently flowing water, the most they would do is lightly bump against the candy. It's not like being sand blasted with particles.
Collision SC- lol Of course I didn't just stick it in my mouth. I may have been a kid but I wasn't stupid. You have to factor saliva into the equation. Since it has enzymes specifically made to break down sugars, it would do much quicker work with a lolly pop than using just water, which was the only thing he used in his calculations.
You guys are doing it wrong. What you're supposed to do is just stick the lollipop in your mouth, and let the saliva dissolve it. Ultimately, you get an extra concentrated sugary 'soup' that is delicious. An added benefit is that you don't need to use your hands as much so that you can focus on other tasks. Why even take one lick at a time?
