The London Overground is a definite success! Every Station on the North London Line 

Yes, I was losing my voice by the end of this - it was a very hard day, and was the start of the series of events that lead to the last video.

Personally I'd argue that the success of the Overground in place of the north london line has less to do with the branding and more to do with the commitment to frequent service

Thanks for coming down to visit London Overground, Jen. I know it is a long trek for you to come down. I think that London Overground is one of the most important things in England. Back in the early 1900s, when the London Passenger Transport Board was set up the focus was on getting people in and out of Central London. And while that is important, it's also led to a fairly toxic way of serving passengers, where British Rail would dump passengers at the edges of Central London and people that did not actually want to go there would be forced to go in and back out again. Crossrail gets all the publicity for taking people from outside London to the other side of London, without them needing to us the Underground. Thameslink also does that, but I think the "one in six journeys" thing made the media notice. But generally, people outside London don't usually need to make journeys to the various towns and villages that Greater London absorbed, as it grew. This really is the London equivalent of "railways run for public service rather than for profit". And back when we had the railway companies that pre-dated British Rail and the people in charge of most of the lines that became London Overground all treated them like they were rubbish lines and tried to run the minimum number of trains they could get away with. Some were threatened with closure. (Even what is now Thamelink got closed at one point. The northern-most parts of the Metropolitan Railway were abandoned by the LTPB.) Everything in London was focused on the middle. These London Overground stations are not the "destination stations" that London Overground has. They are all there for ordinary people just living their lives. And London Overground is a real triumph of London democracy over capitalism. London Overground is not perfect, but it raised the trains per hour and the new trains that were bought were then extended to get more passengers on. Providing a decent service was repaid by passenger demand. There are plenty of other railways, in cities outside London that are as grotty today, as the lines on London Overground were, before TfL took them over. And we badly need other cities to be given the ability to democratise the pokey little railways that are off the tourist trail, so that all of our cities can very quickly get systems similar to London Overground. I liked your comments in the recent tram video, about poor service levels. Please keep that sort of thing up, as people that sit in transport committees in Parliament obsess over how much money is spent building stations and never seem to talk about how long passengers have to wait for trains to arrive. Frequency is freedom. And stations that only get Parliamentary services are oppressive. In between the insane frequency of the Victoria line and unloved stations with Parliamentary services, there are a lot of railway lines that are kind of OK, but which could easily become awesome! Please don't go burning yourself out on long trips to London (as we could always watch London Overground videos from Jago Hazzard). But if you do decide to go along any branch lines near other cities, I hope you can find a few cool local places to visit, so you can realise the potential every railway line can have and enjoy the area the line serves.

The book "Parallel Lines" by Ian Marchant has a chapter featuring the North London Line before the Overground came along. I travelled on bits of it too back then and the way it's changed has been simply revolutionary. Probably the most improved railway over the past thirty years.

I love how you weave together trains and the areas around the stations, and show us how all these different stations look too (it's interesting to see all the different styles of architecture). I love seeing all the different bits and it gives a greater perspective of the areas you visit. Especially love seeing all the different green spaces and canals (locks!) too. My only complaint, is that I now want an ice cream and/or an iced coffee.

I loved discovering the New River whilst on one of my North London Urban Safaris. To wander from Alexandra Palace through Hornsey to Harringay was a wonderful discovery!

Brilliant video Jen, I'm not the biggest fan of busy areas myself. I do need to visit that park near St Pancras sometime.

This video brought back some memories, I have almost done the same route, but the train I took in 1972 as a teen (yes,😊 I am that old ) diverged at Dalston junction and went on to Broad Street, which was long gone before you were born! Jen, even when some of the journeys you take are a bit of a slog, just think on what you have achieved and keep smiling because they are very much appreciated. Much love to you🥰

Excellent video. The transformation of that route it amazing. Back in the 80s it was dirty, dilapidated and dangerous - it seemed like a mugger's paradise. Its state today shows that investment in public transport is worthwhile.

Hackney Wick stn: that "interesting" pattern in the concrete wall is actually the structures of chemical elements. As pointed out in Geoff's station (re-) opening video back then.

I think I was in London on the same day as you, Jen - very hot and busy - I knew there was a reason I don’t normally go to London on a summer Saturday! Lovely to see some water and greenery even in the capital!

Castle's Pie & Mash is right by Camden Road Station! Also, Cally Road was home for me for a long time! Just opposite Highbury & Islington Station there's the old Highbury Station building dating from 1904!

The park next to St Pancras with the old gas holders is a really nice place to stop and chill for a bit. Absolutely recommend.

What I find interesting about Caledonian Road & Barnsbury is that the Westbound Richmond platform is numbered platform 2 the Eastbound Stratford platform is numbered platform 3, however platform 1 has been disused since February 2010 as the station changed to island platform configuration

I was going to mention the fire, but you already knew about it. There was another fire on this line, in the signal box at Gospel Oak, in which the signaller on duty sadly died. I don’t remember the year.

Hi Jen - I was up there 2 weeks ago, though not a fan of Camden. Interesting FACT for you - the gasometers were taken away and refurbished and then put back around the new building

I feel like you'd appreciate doing a "Least used" series for stations. I totally understand not liking crowds. Hope you were able to get away and recharge!

10:39 The last time I had to use Hackey Wick station to get to work I had to walk past seven abattoirs in the area and they smelt extremely bad in the summer

Amazing video! I was actually at Camden on Friday, really busy, got the Northern Line from Euston.

So many memories! I lived in North London for 14 years and so I've used this line a lot. And yes, Camden used to be amazing. It still is in some places but it's become too commercialised and far too busy at the weekends. It's a great spot for a night out though... you'd have always found me in Electric Ballroom on a Friday night!

I lived in London in the late 1980s & certainly the now Overground stations were very run down. As for the rolling stock - that is another story!!!! The opposite end of the scale to today's rolling stock!! Thanks Jen x

At 10:50 people with a chemical background like me would recognise those symbols as representing organic chemicals like benzene. According to Wikipedia they represent "chemical compounds that were invented in Hackney Wick including the world’s first plastic, Cellulose nitrate". Thank you for the video Jen. Camden Town is kinda cool but I think I prefer Brighton's North Laines, both have Collectif anyway (Collectif is the only store I really like in Camden)
