American folk song with a Scottish/Irish folk sound to it, a mix I never knew I needed to hear so bad. It’s great, dude 👍🏻

I believe most of our music is Scotts Irish influenced. Second only to the influence of American black folks. That’s a big part of who we are. At least in my valley music gets pretty Celtic and the young people still show up to dance. Less than our grandmother’s generation, but it’s unbroken tradition at the granges limping along. We’ve got other scenes too. Quite a bit of metal around when I was a kid, but I think that crowd has been transitioning to something a little more punk rock for a while now.

I love that such a simple story can carry such a complex feeling when you set it to music. It’s a shame that young man wasn’t buried at his home, but it’s almost like the prairie is his home now. It’s a world that’s harsh and difficult to make a life in, but one that’s full of love and companionship nonetheless.

I appreciate your beautiful renditions guiding me to the stories of so many of our ancestors, who were displaced from any sense of home, and who still haunt the lands of turtle island with all the horror they experienced, as well as the horror they caused. I take my studies of these histories very seriously because the FULL story needs to be remembered if we want to compost the trash that poverty, displacement, imperialism and colonialism leaves in its wake.

"O bury me not on the lone prairie." These words came low and mournfully From the pallid lips of the youth who lay On his dying bed at the close of day He had wasted and pined 'til o'er his brow Death's shades were slowly gathering now He thought of home and loved ones nigh As the cowboys gathered to see him die "O bury me not on the lone prairie Where coyotes howl and the wind blows free In a narrow grave just six by three- O bury me not on the lone prairie" "It matters not, I've been told Where the body lies when the heart grows cold Yet grant, o grant, this wish to me O bury me not on the lone prairie." "I've always wished to be laid when I died In a little churchyard on the green hillside By my father's grave, there let me be O bury me not on the lone prairie." "I wish to lie where a mother's prayer And a sister's tear will mingle there Where friends can come and weep o'er me O bury me not on the lone prairie." You might also like WILDFLOWER Billie Eilish So Long, London Taylor Swift Peter Taylor Swift "For there's another whose tears will shed For the one who lies in a prairie bed It breaks me heart to think of her now She has curled these locks, she has kissed this brow." "O bury me not..." And his voice failed there But they took no heed to his dying prayer In a narrow grave, just six by three They buried him there on the lone prairie And the cowboys now as they roam the plain For they marked the spot where his bones were lain Fling a handful o' roses o'er his grave With a prayer to God his soul to save

I found another verse that reminds me of your recent loss. I'm thinking of incorporating it into my rendition of the song, which is based on yours: "'I've often wished to be laid, when I died/In the little church[sic] on the green hillside;/By my father's grave there let mine be--/O bury me not on the lone prairie." I first saw it in the Lomaxes' record. I'll have to tweak it to fit, but thought you might be interested.

Something that this makes me wonder about is how many of these songs were written to be sung by foreign voices. Early American would have been such a melting pot of voices and accents and cultures that many of these songs probably sound a little different with modern American accents.
