Sitting on my sofa with my little dog Angus and letting you do the driving while I enjoy the scenery. Thanks for the video my friend! I have been on 50 from Austin to Fallon.....love those wide open spaces.
Im disabled from back injuries, thanks for letting me ride along.awesome hwy.my dad was a airforce commander and i miss the road trips from base to base.
Riding Shotgun Thanks for this. What a brilliant idea! Keeps you alert and gives you the opportunity to share your journey. My wife and I made several trips from MN to CA. Of course we took 80. We love traveling across this beautiful country. Such a treat. If one travels enough, they begin to see the beauty in the varieties of terrain. Thanks to you, next time we will be taking this route.
I'm a sales rep, mostly out on the road here in the UK in my car. Hwy 50 looks an amazing road to drive along. I really enjoy your video's and would love the opportunity, when I retire to take a month away and drive the routes you show on your videos.
Did this once in both directions. Have been west/east and back in previous years but usually further south. Slept in the back of my new Ford 150 when tired. Just pulled over where the shoulder was firm, flat, and wide. Had no people problems. Recommend carry of extra fuel, oil, and water. A/C helpful but I liked the heat. Would start off on an early dawn with the heater on feeling happy every day. Highway 50 does indeed have little traffic. Slow moving large trucks are often easily passed. I did take time out for walking the empty places seeking relics. Found a big tarnished brass button stamped "US", a hunting knife, and 2 boxes of .38 pistol ammunition once at different walks. Two of that trio went into a garbage can at fuel stop.
I was dipspatched on us 50 from co springs to grand junction, absolutely beautiful scenery, I’m just glad the road was dry. Wouldn’t want to do it in the snow & ice. I like your toy boat horn!
Thank you once again for this, I just loved it. Sorry you lost some of the footage you wanted to include but I'll be happy to watch it next time. It must be quite hard to watch the road sometimes with all that magnificent scenery around you.
I enjoyed watching your video, it brings back memories to me. I used to be stationed in at NAS Fallon. I remember driving to Austin one day when I was bored. Anyway be safe out there!
the complete inclusive journey from A to B rewards the traveller with universal spirit and knowledge to a greater extent than anything that destination B can provide.... thanks for uploading this fine fine fine video travelogue.... the small towns passed through remind me of that 1960's movie 'Vanishing Point'.... greetings from Tasmania
Funny thing.. I loved that drive so much that here I sit on a friday night watching your video of you making that drive. I've taken the drive a few times and it meant a lot to me.. Loved every minute of it. Yes, there are quite a few Petroglyphs at that park you passed. Too bad about your camera letting you down and missing the footage from Austin.. Pretty little town in that canyon.. Loved driving through it. Always amazed by the big church and steeple up on the hillside on the right.
Stumbled across your video on Nov 18 / 20. At 1:30 am here in Toronto, during this C19 event. Thanks much, stunning scenery! All the best to you and your family.
Warmest greetings from Belarus, you are my best friend for the past 2 weeks, I am watching all your videos every day and I enjoy the ride and your driving style, I was owner of trucking company with 62 semi trucks in Africa till 2014, I enjoy your comments and stories, I came back from PortlandI Oregon last xmas to see the family in Belarus and I got stuck. I would like to join you one day with one of your trips. I wanted to drive semi truck in the States but for some reasons I was unable, maybe one day. Kind regards from Hussein.
I'm love"n the the spectacular views. Awesome clouds, very beautiful sky. Love your zoom in feature. The mountains are amazing. One looks snow covered, the other lush greenery. Be it forest or just landscape of fields and trees. I had to laugh when you said the road was busy. Not sure what happened to that truck. That must have been when your camera was off. It's like a shock to the system hearing about a snow storm. But I guess you're pretty used to seeing snow in the summer. Is that why you're called Mountain Man Mike. Those yellow bug's must be a pain in the ass. But the view can't be beat. I am really enjoying that view. With or without Aliens. What no peace sign? Hope your day gets netter darlin. God Bless you.
Been there, drove that, on my way back from my Route 66 trip in April of 18. Great drive... people have NO idea how big this country really is until they take a trip like that. I can't imagine what would would have been like to cross this country on horseback or in a wagon.
Basin and Range topography. The mountain ranges all run north - south with large basins between them. I think the same tectonic forces that formed the Sierra Nevada.
Aloha from Hawaii, I really loved this run...so peaceful and i like the long cruise... GoPros and other similar type of cameras sometimes overheat and just shut off.
I have actually been to Tonopah and stayed there overnight a few years back (I am Canadian and I live north-east of Toronto, in Ontario, Canada... it's a long story!). I am very interested in Geology and I could have happily spent months in Nevada with my rock hammer and camera.
My husband came to meet me for lunch at CalTrans HQ on 27th St, Sacramento (next to Business 80) back in 2001. We walked over to the Whole Food Store and I see his bobtail truck parallel parked between two cars. There were several CalTrans Engineers standing there in amazement looking at it. My husband told me they watched him do it in one attempt. Funny. Ok, now for the CalTrans jokes.
As a truck driver I went thru this road and I have never been so terrified and scared of breaking down or having an accident or running out of gas in my life. Thank God it was daytime because I could've never made it driving thru it at night
Rode my Triumph end to end on 50 a few years ago. Wasn't quite prepared for Nevada and Utah - somewhat different than Virginia. absolutely spectacular.
Mike, boy howdy, you said it about Hwy 50! I've driven that hwy many of times and loved being out there pretty much all by myself, see a few 4 wheelers and semis but far between miles seeing other vehicles and those old towns are still out of sight to see! You sure brought back some great memories and thanks for allowing my safety class today and myself riding along! Happy trails and peace!
I watch JBG as well as your channel, the country side the two of you enjoy is completely different. Johnny runs thru green rolling landscape interspersed with cities, your neck of the woods is more like New Zealand's South Island. High country tundra with beautiful snow capped mountain ranges. Our North Island is more like Johnny's scenery. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Yes I drove this route coming back from California in 2017 in December in order to see the area!! Completely different area with it being I think 4000 feet on a plateau!!! Miss the trees since I am from the east coast!!
Your going over railroad pass and down into the Reese River Valley. (I caught a 16 inch brown trout out of the Reese River on a willow pole in 1946) We ice skated there in winter. There are beautiful places in the mountains with a spring or stream in every canyon and native fish. Iguana
The basins between the passes along the "Loneliest Road" section of US-50 are typically over 5000' (1525m) and some closer to 6000' (1830m) elevation, which makes for great scenery, but the passes can seem a bit tame, compared to Colorado or such. The loneliest section of US-50 is east of Middlegate out to Ely.
If you have hours of video I'd prefer to see the uncut version. You can name it "The Loneliest Highway in America.. Hwy 50 Through Nevada - Uncut" Thanks
We drove Highway 50 from Sacramento, CA to Pueblo, CO. We liked Northern Nevada so much, we now live half a mile from Highway 50 East of Carson City. Besides the views, there is history (Kit Carson, Pony Express, stagecoach routes, mining, etc. CAUTION: for most of Nevada, the highway passes through open range. Be alert for wild horses, cattle, deer, coyotes and other animals especially at dusk, dawn and during the night. Hitting one will ruin the day for you and the animal.
I drove Hwy 50 west to east in the summer of '95. No green dessert in July. Didn't see another vehicle the whole time. Promised myself if I ever owned a high-performace car I would bring it to Hwy 50. ( think that's where James Dean was headed in his Porsche Spyder when he was killed in a crash.) 1st rule; Do NOT run out of gas.
When we traveled that road in 2012, we saw 1 whote pick up truck until we hit Austin. After filling up in Austin we drove to Ely where we only saw 4 cars lmao
When we drove through there in 76, that campground where the petroglyphs are, was unimproved and you could walk right up to them. I suspect by now they are fenced off and hopefully vandals have not ruined them.
My wife and I road this highway on our Harleys. We road for hours without seeing any other vehicles. If you ever ride this on a motorcycle fill up at every town even if you think you don't need too. Towns are few and far between.
Was driving east to west on this road, back in 1998. I could see another car going the same way, it was far in front of me. I had the windows and sunroof open...... in a zoned out mind. All of a sudden a loud noise, I thought I blew up the car.....I slowed down trying to figure out what happened. I then saw a air force jet buzz the car way out in front of me and it shot straight up after. Looking up I saw the other one, who buzzed me, way above me trying to get away......our tax dollars at work😂😂😂
I wouldn't drive an old car no matter how reliable and well taken care of. Things are just more likely to break down with all those miles. I love old cars but would prefer a new rental to driving my own 2009 in such remote lands
Technically, the region of US-50 from where it exits the Wasatch to the Sierra Nevada, is referred to in geology as the Basin and Range Province. As a geologist, I have explored the Basin and Range at different times for wildly different targets over a 45 year period. I, too, love the B&R. Eight of the 9 mountain building events that have affected western North America are represented in the B&R making it one of the more fascinating places on earth for a geologist. The latest stage of its evolution is still progressing and that is extension. The B&R is being stretched by the change in Pacific plate motions beginning 45 million or so years ago. Since that time the crust has been gradually thinning as it is pulled apart. Basically Salt Lake City and Reno have slid apart along vast listric normal faults over 50 miles in the last 5 million years. That's speed-demon fast in geological terms. Let me know if you want the full geological workup I did for the whole B&R from an oil exploration perspective 35 years ago.
Very interesting, that is a stretch that I have not seen. Two States I have not been to are 1)Maine, and 2) that one with an 'H' that I cannot drive to or ever remember how to spell correctly ... 🙄 I did drive the route between Winnemucca and Klamath Falls, OR to deliver a vendors trailer ... out there where the wild cattle and jackasses roam. The Doherty rim got interesting, as the big R.V. that was so hot to pass me on top of the hat must have panicked, suddenly he wouldn't go over 20 mph all the way to the bottom. I had to drop my T-case to the low side to find a range where I didn't have the engine wound too tight, yet had enough drag from it so I didn't have to ride the brakes to stay off of him. No problem, I was amused to see someone get his come-uppence after he tailgated me for 25 miles. He'd finally passed me, about 3 miles before starting down the rim, and disappeared in a high rate of hurry, probably having no idea what he was coming up to.
What are those sticks on the side of the road that go on forever? Are you not allowed to park anyway on this highway? It is all private property except the road?
