Problems aside, that sounds like a good way to reach some semblance of ‘job security’. Being in DH means the projects doesn’t have enough credits to make release, but it has just enough not to get canceled. That sounds like a steady paycheck to me.

I remember seeing this announced the same time as Sea of Thieves. I have 0 doubts that they rebooted it to be based around lootboxes, mulitplayer and then a live service model. They would have been way better off just releasing their initial vision and seeing if that worked or not, then try all this other stuff. Ubisellout really needs to stop chasing trends and just put out games again

This is what happens when you have corporations thinking with their profits and not what is best for the overall company. I do like the fact different parts of the country are working on different games. I think that gives a totally different perspective of how games are developed.

This feels like a really bad/hot take, I'll say it anyway...I know all of us want perfect games released that we can buy and enjoy and watch sparkle among a slew of garbage, but...it's just looking more and more like developers and companies overhype games that are absolutely unfinished, and push them out too early, or they stay in development hell and either never get released, or worse, get fully trashed and cancelled. The best course of action seems to be to reduce initial scope, do what's possible in the moment, then branch out when room to maneuver presents itself. People constantly meme Warframe for its bugs and joke about how it's still in beta or whatever else, but that game's evolution to the original 15-20 year old Dark Sector spaceship-raiding concept took place over 8 years of being AVAILABLE to players. It started extremely small scope as a corridor-based looter shooter, and grew outward over time as they had the resources. It absolutely needs more work, like most games do, there's no question there...but it's basically almost there. Why can't more devs do that? Announce a game, say "hey, we have big plans to do specifically XYZ over ABC many years, but for now, we're starting with THIS, please give feedback to guide development, thanks."

Well, they kind of do that, it's just called the live service model and they charge you 60 dollars for it. The onus is on these big companies to hire the right people and not just try to build these games by committee. Have your vision for a game and hire someone to carry it out, don't have an expectation of "good game" and tell people to deliver. The people running these companies (outside guys like Spencer) aren't gamers, they're marketing and economics people. They just want a profitable product, but they have no idea what that looks like.

What I wanted - create a pirate, upgrade my ship, build up my base, rob trade ships, attack forts, land combat, ship PvP and boarding duels with other ppl in certain regions of the map. What I will (not) get - always online game as a service 5v5 PvP or what ever. I mean come on!

I'm surprised that they didn't just go make Pirates Of The Burning Sea #2 and just make it super polished. It would have solved the direction issues and it's not like Flying Lab Software exists any more. It also unlikely that Vision Online Games is going to pick a fight either.

You have too many creative elites involved trying to pull projects in different directions to make a absolute mess or money men that thinks gaming is like food, in that as long as it has the right ingredients and everything goes on schedule it'll come out perfect every time.

I stopped following this game, ,I was super excited when I heard about it, but I am not sure this game will ever come out. Even worse, what if it does come out, after this long development, and its a buggy mess, bad mechanics, ect. That is probably what scares me the most, a great idea, poorly executed, pushing players away from it.

I suppose the scale is somewhat different, but the Vic government/Film Victoria has pumped a lot of funding into games and it's (seemingly) paid dividends for all involved. Maybe it is just scale of operation, but I gotta say, tiny teams don't last when they have incompetent leadership, but incompetent leadership gets promoted at Ubisoft.

Many good games took a long Time to develope. I dont mind waiting as long as they get it right but JC, they have alpha tests to get some feedback from the community AND get some ideas of what Is wrong what Is right AND new stuff to add. They can even look at similar games AND take the good stuff of those games to make this one (black flag, sea of thieves, etc.) Cant Believe they are stucked.

So what's so hard to figure out? Make a pirate game with a bunch of sea monsters, Pirates and Ghost pirates. Maybe have a few spots to dive down and get barred treasure. Give a bunch of ship options. Any ship you should have the option to turn them into crew or kill them and take the loot. Look at Sea of thieves, Whatever they did... do the opposite.

I think they have to many projects i nthe fire for the moment then they reused or changed assets elese where. Hell look at the new game its using mostly Division assets for it, yeah they even let it out they were going to let ths games IP expire

That's a shame. The best thing that ever happened to Assassins Creed were the naval battles in Black Flag.. at least in my opinion. I was looking forward to Skull & Bones for that reason. It's sad that they can't get it right. In my opinion they should have just added some decent gameplay variants to Black Flags naval combat system and that is that. But I assume they ruined everything with their intend to make a live service game out of it.. which focusses on "player engagement" instead of actual fun. I assume that's what ruined the game over and over during the development process.
