The Hoecker Album consists of 116 photographs taken during the last several months Auschwitz was still operating. It literally shows Auschwitz through the lens of a Nazi. The photographs were taken between June 1944 and January 1945, during the most deadly phase of the concentration camp when the Nazis knew the war was lost and all there was left between them and a trial for war crimes was time. During this time over 400.000 Hungarian Jews were murdered, Jews that were previously protected by the government but due to a coup by the Arrow Cross Nazis in Hungary were now sent off to concentration camps if the Arrow Cross party themselves didn’t kill them. But the Hoecker Album doesn’t show these war crimes or the grim situation of the camp during the last months of the war. The album was compiled by Karl Hoecker, a pre-war bank teller but now the adjutant to Richard Baer, the last commandant of Auschwitz. The photographs are a candid portrayal of daily life in the camp for the SS officer guards and official visitors.
On the 22nd of July 1944, the day for the Auschwitz officers is one like any other. Actually, it’s a bit more quiet than usual, only 180 new arrivals are registered of whom ⅔ are gassed immediately. Because it is a calm day, Karl Hoecker is able to accompany several young German girl volunteers to the small resort of Solahütte, around 30 kilometres to the south of Auschwitz. Höcker took his personal camera, the one he would carry throughout his entire term as adjutant to Baer. He takes many photographs, probably to serve as souvenirs for after the war. The pictures show how the girls and Hoecke enjoy the weather, accordion-music, the landscape near Solahütte and the freshly picked blueberries. 30 kilometres to the north one of the worst crimes in the history of humankind takes place and continues to take place, but the photographs only reveal a happy bunch of officers with girls.
The Hoecker Album consists of 116 photographs from hell on earth. The photographs are stuck on 16 double-sided cardboard. Following the war, nobody knew of the existence of the album, however, and it didn’t surface until 2007. It turned out that after the second world war and the liberation of Auschwitz, a US counterintelligence officer discovered the album in an apartment in Frankfurt. He took the album with him to the United States but waited until January 2007 to donate it to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. He was well over 90 at that point and passed away that same summer. I can’t overstate the historical value and uniqueness of the photographs because up until then there had barely been any photographic material of daily life of the SS mass murderers, especially of the largest concentration camp of the Nazi regime. Between 1941 and 1945 approximately 1 million people were gassed in Auschwitz.

My father was a translator for British Intelligence during the war and befriended many POWs. After the war, several kept communication with him and wrote letters (in my possession) how dedicated nazis in civil service positions during the war, remained in their positions after the war. Some years later I lived in Germany for a few years and a good friend of mine, an accountant who worked on the financial amalgamation of East and West Germany after the collapse of Communism, found evidence of the CDU creating false accounting of Jewish 'survivors' in order to feed their party coffers. Who said corruption is dead!!!

Yeah. "They considered themselves to be good men." There's the problem. They measured themselves by a flawed standard. It's rather common: that somehow, from some mysterious source never identified, some people have a "right" to rule others.
@Elwinator3
@Elwinator3 3 года назад
They measured what they measured because they could. Without a moral absolute what do you expect from "humanity"?
@jimdavies6764
@jimdavies6764 3 года назад
@@Elwinator3 A rational one. There is one fundamental, absolute basis for all behavior, and that is self-ownership. Every human being has the natural right to own and operate his or her own life; and that premise is undeniable, hence an axiom. Try denying it! - if you don't own yourself, you don't even have a right to express your opinion and make such a case. Given that axiom, the consequent moral absolute is that everyone is free to run his own life but not that of anyone else. To do so is to "rule" them. The eventual result can be what we saw in this photo album.

Genocide has taken place since the beginning of time and for many it becomes normal as hate makes them blind and hardened to all feelings of compassion. What chance do children have being brought up in such an environment to be anything but what they have been taught. Genocide continues to this day in localised wars all over the world. Sadly, mankind will never learn from the past and will always find justification to go to war and commit atrocities that follow.

There has been a lot of cover up in Germany, in both States sides. East and West Germany had important members in their administrations to be protected. Some former SS members were bullied by protective organisations and kept their material hidden until their death. By law, Germany is keeping personal files closed for 75 years. There will be a lot more facts coming from that source soon. Too late for justice, never too late for learning, especially considering those dreadful revivals in dictatorial administration style in some countries, even by democratic election. Wake up, folks !

@thies7831
@thies7831 3 года назад
@david john Certainly NOT ! Please read all my comments again and then ponder on what I am trying to say. Does that sound like denial ?? Good grief, if I would have been old enough going after these criminals, I would have had a go. Enough trouble with my grandfather, who was a member of the SS guards at Mittelbau DORA and Peenemünde before that. He never opened up fully how much he was involved and I am hoping to get a look into his personal file at the Bundesarchiv soon. If there is one lot on this planet I dislike most, it is Nazis in any form and Nationality. They are not limited to Germany only and what should have been learned from this dark chapter of humanity, should have been strong enough not to be repeated in a nation that sacrificed so many lives, stopping the Nazis in Europe.
@thies7831
@thies7831 3 года назад
@david john Correct. Fully aware of the situation. The trouble with the Germans was that a slim majority had hoped, that Hitler and his mob would "make Germany great again". Financing industrialist were calculating their profits and as soon as these Nazis would not fit their strategy any longer, they had planned to organise their demise. No chance. After changing the constitution (THEY CAN'T DO THAT !), weird enough by referendum of the manipulated majority a few other minor changes followed and the "backdoor" was locked. To the final day with no escape. Sure the assassination attempts piled up, but in the end the menace Hitler was only removed by his own pride - suiciding in the bunker. And after that, there were still a lot of influential Germans left, believing in Hitler, planning a "Fourth Reich". THAT has to be stopped forever, regardless where on this planet.

I’m fairly well read on my history being the buff that I am. I’ve poured through countless photos of both World Wars, but this is the first time I’ve seen these. It’s quite chilling to see these “monsters” in everyday life. It’s hard to equate them as being human. I think that is what makes these so very important. Being Native American, the stories that have been passed down of my own ancestor’s forced relocation and genocide lack such photographic evidence. Now, I’m certainly NOT trying to compare the Trail of Tears to the Holocaust, nor do I want to disrespect those with ties to either. Both were despicable parts of history. I’m merely saying that these photos send a very chilling feeling up my spine. They make things feel a bit more “real.” Very sad...such things in history makes one wonder if we’re truly destined to destroy ourselves.

I guess I’m not surprised to see the daily lives of these German officers. It’s paradoxical, but why should it be surprising to know that these officers did normal activities at times? The photos are fascinating and I’m glad we’ve preserved them to teach about humanity’s recent past.

Can a person lose his or her soul by surrendering to evil. Well consider a guard who is watching children being sent to the gas chambers. He sees it. He cooperates in the horror. He has brought Hell upon himself. My belief is that of Dante. Evil exists and Hell is.

I must admit that I have studied this topic (the Holocaust) for the last 20 years and I still struggle to believe what I often read. For me sounds more like a horror story not a horrendous piece of history. It is difficult to believe that humans would do such things to other humans with no remors at all, it just can't be real.

The two dots that you see above the letter 'o' - is whats called a 'diacritical mark'. English uses them, but you're so use to them, you don't think so. Anyway, these are called an oom-laut (umlaut) this would be how you would pronounce them, - or 'it'. What they do to the 'OH' sound in the letter 'o' - is more or less to squeeze or round it while pronouncing it. So what may look like Höker -pronounced 'hawker' with two weird dots, - is kinda pronounced something like Hirker. I think as a an American kid, I'd been better off in France.

@@68majortom The German alphabet has more characters than the English, and ä and ö are their own entities (so are ü and ß) but in circumstances where they, or the ability to compose them from the base letter and ˙˙, are missing, then they're written/substituted as ae / oe (ue, ss). ˙˙ is also known as diaeresis and trema.

You ask yourself how could ordinary citizens come to do such a thing to other innocent human beings. Its how the human mind works ie propaganda over a period of time promoted by official. Media will eventually take hold in some form. Then the military uniform part of serving ones country and doing your duty. Feeling special even a hero. Peer pressure not to break ranks. Conforming to an order from your superior rank takes responsibility away from you. Once you step over that line into darkness and continue doing it for a week or two it becomes routine and you can detach yourself from it. Even screams...blood..dead bodies can become the norm. These people in ss uniforms were mostly ordinary working class types with average education.

I read the posts and have heard this for years. "How can people let this happen?" Not hard to see how in a country that is lucky to have a 60% voter turn out like the USA. There is a lot more to the anti-Jews and Communists feeling in Germany that came about after WWI that a lot of people don't know about. Maybe you should dig into that a little.
