This series is most certainly the BEST TV worth watching in over a decade of British television. 10/10. It does NOT focus on the sensationalism of an animal & butcher who ruthlessly murdered over 15 woman in a 5 year period. But more importantly puts a spotlight on the injustice served by the Yorkshire constabulary who repeatedly fumbled their way through the case due to appallingly bad management & their sexist, misogynist attitudes that clouded their ability to see past alpha ego & politics. 9 times the killer was in their custody & let go. NINE TIMES! The cast is pure brilliance with performances that leave you in compete empathy for the women & survivors of Britains most hideous series killer. The most shocking realisation of this true story is - NOTHING HAS CHANGED in British policing attitudes. NOTHING AT ALL.
I’ve just watched it and feel your comment about nothing has changed is probably true if it wasn’t for cctv and mobile phone data many murders would be unsolved
As a woman growing up in West Yorkshire in the 70s I an so angry at the attitude of the police . I remember going to a nightclub when the police would play the Geordie tape which was a hoax !
One thing we have to remember though is that despite the South Yorkshire Police’s many, many failings in this case and their crazy prejudices that put more women in danger, there is only one person who is truly to blame - Peter Sutcliffe.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I think the consensus now is that the police were quite right to investigate the tape and letters as a legitimate line of enquiry. But it should never have been a point of imination. The police were also hampered by having no computer system at that time, with 600,000 hand-written case cards, and really no way to manage such a vast amount of information. But it's also true that there was some shoddy detective work, and stolid plodding 1970s Yorkshire policemen were perhaps not best suited to such a complex case. They really needed top rank intellectuals, logicians even mathematicians whose job is to think outside the box. In the end, they did get that, when they realised they were floundering, but only after 10 women had already been murdered.
Peter Sutcliffe was well known in Burnley his Auntie lived in Nelson hed stop over when visiting Burnley for a night out , hed also parked his lorry nearby.He used to drink in my uncle's pub The Griffin on Rossendale Road.He delivered to Regent Axle on the Rossendale Road Industrial estate another late friend used to handle his delivery and they'd have a brew and chat about what he was doing at the weekend while they unloaded his lorry.
He lived around the back of my school where his wife still lives (or lived) today. The building they used for the police station in *The Long Shadow* (2023) is 1.5 miles South of me. The building they used for *Burnley's Town Hall* and *Burnley's Magistrates Court* interiors in *Bank of Dave* (2023) are 1.5 miles North of me.
Amazing cast, brilliant acting, I felt it started off really good, I really enjoyed the focus around the victim’s stories. Saying all that, I did feel that getting nearer to the end, they dragged it out too much and I was starting to become bored and couldn’t wait for it to be over! Seven episodes was too long, they could have probably fitted it all in 5 episodes and still managed to get some of the victims stories in there.
No idea why they left out Theresa Sykes's attack. Sutcliffe was chased, hid in bushes and was almost caught and it was just around the corner from where George Oldfield lived. Still, I thought the Jacqueline Hill aftermath was very powerful and well acted.
Incorrect. There's also been *Peter* (2011), *Red Riding 1983* (2009), *Red Riding 1980* (2009), and *Red Riding 1974* (2009). I haven't seen *Peter* yet so I don't know where it was filmed, however *The Long Shadow, This is Personal* and the *Red Riding* trilogy were all filmed in *Bradford.*
Agreed, brilliant acting, and for once focused on the victims and their families. The scriptwriter has taken these very ordinary people and their hitherto very ordinary lives and made them poignant and interesting. No mean feat. It's significant that not only were alot of the women in a mess, but so were alot of the men.
I've always said a person has to do what they have to do to feed their kids. I don't judge. The way the police treated these girls (and the suspects) was absolutely appalling. Filth in every sense.
Any kind of sex work is dangerous as the women are often beaten, robbed and they get VD. It is not a good job for anyone. The feminist garbage of sex work is just work and not prostitution is ridiculous. And there was welfare help and housing help. And where were the fathers? Why were they not working or paying child support? Perhaps there was drug abuse and a cultural acceptance of pimping and prostituting in those areas. What was interesting was the difficult childhood Sutcliffe had and his odd foreign-born wife.
This drama looks good can't wait itv it looks like you will never make sci-fi drama so sad what is wrong with some british dramas on itv / no comedy no sci-fi
I loved the first episode. However, I am now desperately trying to find out the name of the seventies disco track that Emily Jackson puts on the juke box at the Gaiety, and dances to with her admirer from the bar. Anyone know it?
The police interview in episode three was disgraceful. The police treated the girl terribly.....common prostitute.....nice. If that is the way these girls are spoken to, I think it is appalling.
Disgusting that tha black women got £1700 Then had her benefits stopped but the copper sold is story to the papers and got £40000 for the ripper story funny how he could do that
What's with the information panels dropping down whilst watching a program on ITV 1 it's pathetic advertising the next program whilst watching another.
Hmm ive seen few more episodes. Why was Yvonne Ann Pearson Sutcliffe victim replaced with a made up character Donna Deangelo? Even the 5 pound note was omitted from the murder. Whats point of the show if its not gonna be accurate and cover important stuff 😒

Mind numbingly slow editing. Lots of anguished staring into the middle distance. Probably a good three parter in there somewhere. Check out Manhunt with Martin Clunes. Now that's more like it.
Wow, I' d forgotten how primitive our policing was back then. Only 50 yrs ago! Science/forensics has really changed things since then, thank god. And, methods of policing and legal representation were very basic at best. Good series, but glad science and the law, have advanced exponentially since then. Not to mention the even more blatant sexist, misogynistic behaviours, methods, attitudes rife in society and police services. Still a way to go though. Good cerebral series. We need more great British cerebral drama. Instead of being force-fed American brain-dead trash!
