The driver driver told him to sit back in his seat he didn’t want the woman sitting in his seat he told dad to get off the bus he took the black woman with him he carried her shopping,she cried nearly all the way back to her house. What a good movie. We always need to remember our past so we can remember the lessons learned from it. I'm from a little town in Alabama about 2 hours from Montgomery and Selma, and I'm proud of it. I'm not proud of the way black people were treated back then or the horrible acts of violence, but I'm proud of what was accomplished here. I didn't come up with a maid. As a matter of fact, my grandma took in other people's laundry to wash, iron and sew and my mother worked in a sewing factory. I'm proud of how far we Southerners have come regarding our racial relations. I've lived in several different states across the U.S. from the East Coast to the West Coast and I can honestly say Alabama is now one of the least racist places of them all. The ugliness of racism can be found everywhere, but Southeast Alabama has some of the friendliest, most loving people I've ever met, black and white.

I have read your post about the improvements in relations in your town, and I am glad to read it. It doesn't help me to know that bigots were taught from childhood to have hateful attitudes. I was born, raised and spent my life in Arizona, which is home to 21 different tribal nations and to many other cultures. My city has long been home to people from all across the Earth, and throughout my lifetime, has had a very international "flavor." We are neighbors, friends and coworkers, growing up together we were playmates and best friends. It is my experience, and I know that others in this city agree, that those of us that were born here have very inclusive attitudes and always treat others with respect and courtesy: we are steadfastly against ethnic discrimination, and would stand with our neighbors. Born in 1960, I never witnessed any forced segregation of any kind, nor any bad behavior of that sort. Arizona has always been very mixed, very diverse. When I was young, aside from the preexisting population here, the adults, like my parents, were not born here, but were brought by their parents, largely from the midwest, and if any of them had bad attitudes, they kept it to themselves, such that I never witnessed that kind of unconscionable behavior. My parents as children were taught to be bigots. They knew I was growing up in a different culture from them, and that there was nothing they could do about it other than move to a different region, so they never tried to interfere with my relationships or friendships. I was allowed to eat dinner or sleep over at my little friends' homes, and they were allowed to eat dinner or sleep over at mine, and my parents always behaved graciously, even though they were prejudiced. One of my parents grew up in Texarkana, TX., right at the Arkansas state-line, and their siblings were all raging bigots, and they all received the care of a "mammy" in addition to their parents. I cannot begin to relate to their rearing or attitudes. I well remember Aunt Ruth, who had the foulest and most hateful mouth: I was quite young, but I'd leave the room when we visited there, and was floored that my parents would stay in the same room with that trash talk. Having witnessed the behaviors of those people, I have a very low opinion of bigoted southerners. They should all have been very ashamed of themselves. The prospect of watching this movie was not easy, because such people simply do not understand how twisted of mind they truly are. Maybe you have wisdom of pespective to offer here. One might notice that I don't use words like "racial/racism/racist," and the reason is because there is ONE race, the human race. The very words that tout the false ideology of there being multiple races, comes from their old teaching (designed to enable enslavement) of some being subhuman, as meaning > another species. The word "race" is a synonym for the word "species," and I will not uphold that false teaching. When we use their false words with one another, we are unwittingly upholding their devisive doctrine, as the teaching itself divides us into "races." It perpetuates division. Mankind has many lineages, and many cultures, but it has only ONE race, the human race, a single species. I remember that afternoon when that parent whispered into my ear [there was no one around, it was as if they didn't want Creator to hear them] those unspeakable words (describing some as "subhuman") and I was shocked to my core. They had also pretended to be pro-life, and the only other time when that parent literally whispered into my ear [again, no one was around] was in defense of then-illegal abortion, the killing of unborn children. Between those two whispering events, I knew there was a great chasm between my parents' notion of "values" and my own. Decades later, I learned that my parents (several months prior to the second whisper, and illegally, in October of 1971) had killed my younger sister in the womb, their own child, my sister whom I have never had the opportunity to know. They disrespected Creator's creation, whether by one way or the other, the sanctity of human Life, as neither were "subhuman."

Terrific movie and a real tear jerker. Only 70 years ago that this kind of situation existed in the south. All i can think is may the negroes who suffered humiliation and abuse at the hands of white trash - mostly descendants of third rate immigrants- may all those negro people rest in peace. Their faith and hope were so strong. So grateful to have seen this movie.

I cried at the end if this wonderful film. The child actress who played Mary was the actress who was in Kevin Costner's film The War, another underrated film. Whoopi is an excellent actor, I've seen many of her films. Sissy is great too.

I just realized that tonight and that sissy spacek is the mom lol that said run Minnie run that couldn't stand her daughter she's the white lady in this movie. Lol I mean sissy is known for alot of movies but I haven't seen this In years and realized this was her. I think they wanted to make a movie about how the maids felt in that time vs the moment of equal rights itself

We all bleed red, but words and ignorance cut a deeper lasting wound. Whether it is learned behavior or just plain lack of knowledge we all need to change our opinions of others. Each race has had struggles, some due to superior thinking others from following the wrong ideologies. We need to take a walk in each others shoes, stop focusing on the mirror and embrace each other as the children God intends us to be.

Gotta say, one of the opening lines is full of profound truth & sacred wisdom - "there's always something extraordinary about somebody who changes and then changes those around her". Our Black family (that of humanity), has contributed & continues to contribute in innumerable ways, to the rich & varied texture of American life: through arts & culture, in academia, in the worlds of medicine & science, sport & athleticism, politics etc..but perhaps above all? In the Spiritual life of America - we owe our brothers & sisters a great, great debt.

Thank you for posting. Thank you very much. I grew up in a part of California where there were not very many black neighborhoods close by my house. There were no colored kids at my schools (K-12). I was not taught about civil rights, racism, or the relationship between white, black, brown or yellow. I did see violence on the TV at dinnertime as in this film they watched news at the table, but it was such a stressful situation all around I would just blank out. (Actually the only TV I & my sisters were allowed was this dinner time NEWs. I have to say that now catching up in my over the hill years is a blessing. I have to say that as sickening as the dialogue was to listen to, I can believe it was probably toned down from real dialogues, and that's very sad. The best part is that God was actually the last word in the film, and that it was pretty well made all around to convey the true facts and emotions that happened. I give God praises every day, and every night. I love the love God has for His family of all various forms.

Magnificent movie. For peace and love in this world we must accept our differences .
@Julia-nl3gq
@Julia-nl3gq Год назад
No, for peace in this world we have to understand that everyone has the right to his/her own opinion. That means that if someone believes in something that I don't agree with, I do not have to accept it. Trying to force people to accept things that they do not believe in will never create peace, and it is, in my opinion, bullying. Let people believe whatever they want, and don't force them to accept things they do not believe in.
