I love how the defenders fly into a collective rage when they notice Theoden is injured and immediatly start pushing back with renewed fervor once he's safetly behind them.

"Gimli! Aragorn! get out of there!" - Barricades gate entrance "I'm sure they'll be fine"

Saruman's Uruk Hai would have taken winterfell in a heartbeat

I've never noticed this before, but in embracing Haldir at the very end Aragorn did him such a great service. The stars are of great significance to the elves. Being the first of the races to awaken, when they awoke there was no sun or moon, the two trees had not yet been planted, and (I believe) the lamps had been destroyed. The only form of light at the time of the elves awakening was the stars. As a result the stars hold an almost religious significance for them. Haldir is about to fall forward here, as Aragorn embraces him he falls back, allowing his last sight to be the stars overhead.

I love how this battle, by this time, just made you feel exhausted. Not because of how long it was, but because of the emotional impact of it. The opening volleys, the breach of the wall, the defenders desperately trying to hold on. You really felt it all

I love it how gimli needed to be pulled away by two people in order for him to stop fighting

Haldir needed a full minute for his thousands of years of life to flash before his eyes

That shot at 3:40 of the ladders going up with hundreds of orcs hanging off of them is outstanding.

4:55 No one is talking about that so i do. I love that scene. It shows what Legolas said earlier, and perfectly portrayes how outclassed Rohans "army" was without having the edge of beeing inside of Helms Deep. Just look how one sided it is, and how overpowered this child was. Just imagine beeing like what 16 years, pulled into army and then such a tank of a monstrous beast is handling you in a "younger brother thinks he can challenge his older brother" style.

4:10 STILL ONLY COUNTS AS ONE

Legolas shoots the rope lifting the ladder and easily kills 50+ and you hear gimli that still only counts as one. I was cracking up 😂

Legolas: “Final count, 42.” Gimli: “43.” Aragorn: *Hundreds, and is still angrily murdering Uruk-hai in the distance*

After 19 years, still no movies are better than this.

When Legolas started using his long knives, instead of his signature bow, n arrow. You know the battle was getting more serious for them.

Man from a tactical standpoint , this battle is amazingly played by both sides.

If you guys look closely from 5:18 to 5:26 , you can see Arwen being the first one going up the stairs retreating. She was originally suppose to fight in the battle for Helm's Deep but was later cut , yet you can still see her here.

this is what GOT wish it could be.

"What can man do against such reckless hate?" You can not send your men outside castle walls and have a suicide cavalry charge for starters. You did well Theoden! You did well!

I love how there are hundreds of orcs in front of the gate and Gimli is just "We can take them!"

It was always insane to me how Jackson manages to keep the tension. Cause every few minutes there’s a scene where it appears the battle might be turning. Yet they’re all immediately followed by scenes that show that the battle is far from over and up the tension by showing the orcs maintaining the upper hand.

Ah RU-vid recommending me lotr battles after watching Got to remind what good writing looks like.

For those sad that Haldir (the elf died), don't worry, in the book's he doesn't die. In fact, the elves never even come to Helm's Deep in the books.

5:30 Gimli kills Aragorn 😂

At about 5:22, you can clearly see at least an elf, if not a few, who survived the entire battle. In the script, PJ has “all remaining elves and men” retreat to the glittering caves, leaving the Rohan Royal Guard there to ride out and eventually meet the Uruk Hai. Even before this, you see elves providing cover for retreating forces, but that’s beside the point - and before the specific scene I’m talking about. I’ve seen a few other posts discussing the last remaining elves. The best consensus is that the few survivors marched back to Lorien to take part in the Siege of Lothlorien...Must’ve been a shit journey home for the few remaining elves, who after losing much of their kin in this battle, undoubtedly had to also take part in facing an invasion of their homeland of Lothlorien soon upon their return from the battle at Helm’s Deep. Yes, I obviously know this is separate from the book where only Legolas actually was there, but I’m just strictly going by the movie in this particular case.

I ADORE the Isengard Army; Not only looking professional, but acting so (muc more then Mordor at least xD). -Suppressing the Elves on the walls with crossbows - Pikewall against the charge - The Berserkers set on the ladders - Using the turtle formation - Using the Crossbows immediatly on the gate breach. If Saruman had the means of Morder, Minas Tirith woud have been a lot more one sided...

4:02 One of the best moments in film. I remember it in the cinema, complete silence and this moment where the huge latter crashes into the crowd. Everyone was just silently "wooooow"

Gimli's courage is LEGENDARY in this battle. Furius to fight on and enraged by the order to retreat to the keep, 2 elves had to pull him out of the fight.

Can we take one moment to realise that Theoden is a damn Badass... gets hit by a lance, taking one himself and stab that Uruk showing him how its done... a real king

G: "Don't Tell the elf!" E: "Not a word." *Grabs and Throws* "YEEEET!!"

*Bard shoots Smaug with his black arrow* 5 year old Gimli: "That only counts as one!"

Graphics still better than most movies nowadays. Brings back childhood memories.

this battle was one of the best moments in cinema even to this day. a literal legendary piece of art.

Only now as an adult do I recognize how impressive the shot at 5:03 is.

That clash at 4:54, when that brave boy just charges a uruk-hai with the axe...my god that possibly is one of the most powerfull scenes of the battle, that is concentrated on one-on-one fight !

One of my favorite parts is gimil saying to toss him then adding just before he does "don't tell the elf" I loved the dynamic between legolas and him trying to compete by counting their number of enemies they kill here and during the battle for Minas Tirith

King Theoden, right in the mix, getting stabbed and hacking off arms and shit. Finally, a leader I can get behind.

Completely off topic but I love how unashamedly beautiful Haldir is. Like sure he's and elf, but the man's eyelash game is killing it while he is, well, being killed.

Wayyyy better than the battle of Winterfell

At a scene here 1:52, when I first watched this movie, and till this day there can be no character that can beat Aragorn's character, he's such a good leader by letting his men run first, and we can clearly see him running last. Love Aragorn so much, If I was a common foot soldier in Middle Earth, I'd ride into battle any day if Aragorn is leading.

One of the best movies ever made! Peter Jackson is a genius! 💯

the shot at 4:48 is fantastic , you can see defenders packed shoulder to shoulder on every available section of wall giving it their all.

Absolutely love this whole thing. Arguably the greatest battle sequence on film.

When I saw it in the cinema I thought of this as a really great battle no more. But now I relize how hopeless their situasion was. And how terribly they were overrun by uruks. These movies will never be forgotten!!

It's dark, the enemy is wearing dark armor, their skin is almost black too, it was even raining in the beginning and yet you can see everything perfect. You hyped us by saying it would be better than this LOTR masterpiece. Pffff u failed us all

just love legolas' expression when he pulls both of his knives out. so much spirit, disgust and anger towards that evil.

Two things I just noticed while watching this video: 1. At 3:52 there are a handful of Elves on the walls with the Rohirrim. 2. At the same time, there are also Uruk-hai on the walls before the ladders get on. The Uruk-hai are actually leaking through from the breach in the Deeping wall from the side.

Always feel sorry for that poor Rohan soldier/peasant at @4:56 , swings his axe screaming, uruk catches it, head butts him throws him against the wall and punches him in the face with metal fist, and baring in mind it's most likely cold at night and his face wet from rain would make it all the more painful :(

Gotta respect Aragorn being the last man up the stairs, shows a tried and true commander.

The Battle of Balls Deep.

The "Gimli Killing Aragorn Edit" at the end had me in stitches for ages. Well done.

5:18 In the top right corner you can actually see Arwen entering the keep. This is due to the fact that she was originally planned to come to Aragorns aid and fight alongside the elves at helms deep.

The death of haldir is so sad, especially if you have read the books, it's a character way more develloped in the books but his treatment on jackson's saga is still awesome ! Oh by the way, everyone knows that Lotr is better than GoT

For all these years watching this film I thought Gimli said "Don't tell me off" before Aragorn tosses him, just realised he's saying "don't tell the elf" 😂

I love the hidden, “it only counts as one” line when Legolas shoots the ladder rope

In this battle you can really tell Aragorn is of Numénorien descent - throwing Gimli fully armored, the ladder plunge, one arm hold of that rope with the dwarf on the other are all feats of strengh beyond any man I'd say.

That freaking ending😂

5:16 Uncut Arwen Footage Look at the top right of the shot. You'll see someone in a black and red dress with a quiver on her back looking around before making her way up the stairs. Aragorn follows closely behind and blocks an Uruk's swing that looks like he was aiming for her. She ends up being the first person to go all the way up the stairs and out of the shot. There are other shots in the daytime scene where you can barely see her red dress on her white horse behind Theoden's as they ride out of the keep, but it always cuts before showing her face. And, of course, there's the brief shot of her fighting on horseback where Eomer rides into the shot. Man, I really wish we got to see the original cut where Arwen kicks ass before Peter Jackson edited her out.

Anyone else love the moment Theoden leans out of the gate, and punches an Uruk in the face. Little details like that in the background make these battles feel real.

So Aragorn can hold himself + master dwarf Gimli in full armour with 1 hand holding rope. Elite grip strength.
