The fact that there's actual lighting over the actors and scenery despite it being night time is such a breath of fresh air. Movies nowadays make everything so dark you can barely see for 'mood' setting. It can be dark for the characters but the audience is the ones why have to see everything

I love the design of the Uruk-hai. The armor is intimidating and memorable, their weapons are crude, their battle cries are thunderous and demoralizing. A worthy adversary in battle. Props to the team that made Tolkien's work come to life. I know Tolkien-purists don't like the films, but they got millions of people into LOTR and Tolkien's other works.

Imagine being that one Orc who marched hundreds of miles only to die before the battle begins

As a New Zealander, it's a tradition to watch atleast one LOTR/Hobbit movie per month.

Younger people who never saw this in the movies don’t understand just how intense this scene was . The NOISE of the roaring and stomping was deafening! Everyone in the place was open mouthed and silent …I genuinely felt my palms sweaty like i was about to be involved in some heavy shit . I will never forget that experience

After that disappointing Game of Thrones battle, I had to come cleanse myself with a proper night battle. Lord of the Rings and Tolkien forever ❤

Still can’t believe in 2002 they could film something of this quality that still looks better than some modern films

The fact that the filming of Helm’s Deep was long, exhausting and hellish in itself, only added to the gritty aesthetic and realism in this battle. Fucking legendary.

This will forever hold up against the test of time and I'll never cease to get goosebumps everytime I watch it

This trilogy will live forever..the story, battles, music, actors, graphics...everything was exceptionally perfect.

They need to re-release this to theaters. There are generations that need this.

This entire battle, and even the scenes leading up to it (like Aragorn finally arriving at Helm’s Deep), are why Two Towers is my favourite of the trilogy. Absolutely amazing battle that still stands up, and even excels, compared to other fantasy battle scenes of modern movies.

This will forever be my childhood favourite movie scene, and it still is today. What a masterpiece of a trilogy.

Aragorn says hold in elvish after the first orc is killed because the shot hit the weak spot and he figured it had to be one of the elves that took the shot

Props to the camera crew. They risked their life to get close to the Uruks and get some amazing close ups

I don't know why but I totally love the fact that Aragorn command the Elves in their language....that shows the bond that Aragorn has with the Elves

I'm 50 and LOTR is simply my best movie of ALL TIME. Followed closely by The Hobbit. Those films are simply out of this world!!! 'Incredible' doesn't do them justice

This battle is pure chaos and I absolutely love it. Everyone is throwing hands and everyone is catching hands. We’ll never see anything like this again.

Game of thrones happened like 15 years after this, yet were unsuccessful to surpass this masterpiece. The whole trilogy was way ahead of its time. Cinematography, effects, music, acting. Everything makes sense and makes it one of the best movie trilogies ever created, if not the best !

The fact that this is the battle that all other/ future high fantasy battles compares to or tries to live up to. After all these years. Says a lot about this scene. Truly a masterpiece.

Why don’t they make movies like this anymore? I wish I could have experienced it in the cinemas. I bet it was insane.

Why are they inside the castle? They should go outside. Also get rid of bows and arrows, and have a suicide cavalry charge right at the beginning. Oh wait, they aren't idiots and used that old nogging and the writers actually planned a good battle.

The lucky stray shot was so well placed and accurate, Aragorn thought that a trigger happy elf had commit insubordination so he shouted an order in elvish telling them to hold fire.

Aragorn commanded an army and rallied everybody until Gandalf showed up. Jon Snow screamed at a dragon.

I love how Gimli was so proud at the fact that he took out two of them, then Legolas said "I am on Seventeen". That's when the sibling rivalry kicks in 🤣and he went into maximum mode.

20 years on, still the the greatest fantasy battle to grace our screens.

I like how Aragorn says "hold" in Elvish because he assumes an Elf just made that epic shot 😂

Fun fact: Gimli's actor was supposed to let some of the orc actors climb the ladder on to the wall to show some of his axe handling skills, but instead he just kept hitting the actors before they got on the wall.

The Elves, the Men, the Orcs, they've all got some really cool armor, weapons and aesthetics, but the Uruk-Hai are just so freakin' cracked, guys are badass.

Whenever I watch a part of LOTR, directly after it I start watching the whole trilogy, taking in the music, the craftsmanship, design, acting, directing, writing, interpreting, everything. From A to Z an absolute masterpiece. Thanks to everyone involved in the production, movies, books, us, the readers, watchers, writers...this project as a whole is one for the ages. I don't know what the world's gonna look like in 100 to 200 years, yet if it will anything like today this Lord of the Rings project around Peter Jackson will be regarded as one of a kind project in human mankind. I mean everything, all chain links of the project chainmail shirt had to work together in coherence. I mean even all making of material and movies and interviews together are just a small part of the real thing. The everyday work, through night and day for years and years and post production. Didn't Peter say somewhere in the Californian mountains, they have stored over 1000 and more hours of shooting material. The scale of this endeavor, Odyssey and life's journey is so immense, even Peter and so many people involved said in interviews they couldn't even believe it, the shear impact it also had and what they all were involved in to what extent it reached. So many people involved, and all the extras and people behind all of it. "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

I can still remember that the whole movie theater was hyped af when the battle was about to begin, but when it started to rain, the theater went dead silend. Such a beautiful battle

"Then I shall die as one of them", such a great line from Viggo he was the perfect actor to play Aragorn

This and Saving Private Ryan's opening scene are two of the best battle scenes ever. Change my mind.

These movies were the peak of television. They were made the same year I was born, yet I’ve never seen anything go beyond LOTR

It's awesome to think how in the face of such destruction Aragon is the only one playing objectives while the other two are just always going for kills.

This dude is actually the one who started the domino effect, he released the arrow > the war started> the uruk hai losing their mind and started to be aggressive > the rohirrim appeared > Rohan won > Isengard lost > Mordor was the only powerhouse left > Mordor attacked Gondor > Rohan helped gondor, since they won against Isengard (because of this legend) > Gondor and Rohan alliances win the war > Gondor and Rohan distracted Mordor forces> the ring destroyed. All this because of this guy. Legend said if Frodo gave the ring to him, he would attach the ring to his arrow, and fire it straight to the mountain of doom

"Hey, King Theoden, I've got an idea. Let's put the bulk of our troops OUTSIDE the castle walls, including our ballistic weapons. Then, we send out our best cavalrymen in a suicide run by themselves against a vastly numerically superior enemy. Huh, what do you think?" "You're fired." "Well, screw you. I'm going to go start my own fantasy kingdom, with gambling, and hookers!"

I love how grim and bleak this scene comes off. You can feel the hopelessness of what’s actually unfolding.

That scene when archers firing over their heads give me chills and tears. What a scene

You can tell just how much heart was put into this trilogy. “We had no interest in putting our messages into this movie. But we thought we should honor Tolkien by putting his message into it” -Peter Jackson, 2002 And basically zero heart was put into Rings of Power… And this trilogy is still a masterpiece in 2024 :)

I just noticed the tiny detail at 2:38 where, when the orc falls, the arrow gets pushed through his back

Fun fact: Sean Astin once asked LOTR cinematographer Andrew Lesnie where the lighting in this scene is coming from, as it takes place during a thunderstorm with clouds covering the moonlight. Andrew replied "the same place the music is coming from".

4:02 is so cool, just the idea of sending up beserkers to distract and reek havoc, even though they will die, is brilliant and I wish more movies or shows did this.

Wait, what? There is actually a better strategy than a suicide cavalry charge, putting catapults on the frontline, and putting troops in front of defenses?

The rain and thunder and lightning made this battle even more epic. Seeing those first siege ladders going up and the berserker shock troops hurled on the battlements is so awesome

4:00 Ladders appearence with the beginning of the music is so good

This absolutely terrified me as a little kid, but I think thats why it felt so real and made me appreciate the battle even more.

Legolas: "Their armour is weak at the neck, and beneath the arms" Elves who are likely thousands of years old, been in numerous battles, and who's extremely keen eyes, even in the dark of night, can clearly see the neck and armpits are only covered by chainmail: "Thanks captain obvious!"

So much better than battle for Winterfell. Almost 20 years....

This was made in 2002, let that sink in for a moment and appreciate the mastery and craftsmanship that has gone in to this, dozens of years a head of time. Game of thrones shouldn't have dared to bring up such a comparison to their absolute garbage of a battle. No wonder Maisie Williams was walking around near the centre of London not knowing what the actual hell she had just read.
