Frodo is going to elf heaven basically. Besides from not being able to find peace in middle earth the elves are able to heal his wound and his heart in Valinor. Sam, having been a ring bearer for a short while and helping Frodo is also allowed to go Valinor as well and eventually does after Rosie dies and his kids are all grown.

For me I always thought this was Tolkien’s way of conveying how it feels to come home from war with PTSD and have friends who just don’t heal and eventually take their own lives.
@Yuhhuh1
@Yuhhuh1 10 месяцев назад
@@Mini_Hayley It was definitely his intention to convey PTSD. Also Frodo's stab wound in the books is caused by a physical shard of the morgul blade thats left embedded in him. Which is a direct allegory to shrapnel wounds that Tolkien witnessed in WW1. Many WW1 vets lived with lifelong pain because the shrapnel couldn't feasibly be removed at the time. In tolkien's world, ring induced PTSD can be cured, but only by divine Valar magic. Frodo ultimately leaves because they have the cure for both his PTSD and shrapnel wounds in elf heaven.

The movie doesn't show it, but the Hobbits were given special runic blades in the Barrow Downs. You notice Merry stabbed the witchking. That broke the spell that made him invulnerable. Then, Eowyn stabbed him. However, even striking the witchking causes severe pain. Both Merry and Eowyn nearly die because of it.

In the movie version, Galadrial gives Merry & Pippin the daggers when she is handing out gifts in Lothlorien. "they have seen battle before" she tells them. They have. They were forged long ago to fight the witch king, and were enchanted. When Merry stabs the Witch King, it severs the WK's link to Sauron, which is the source of his power, making him vulnerable. Eowyn then fulfills the prophecy that no man shall kill the WK (double meaning here too as Merry isn't a man either). Meanwhile, Sam is still holding his rope and saying "could I get one of those shiny daggers" and Galadriel just chuckles at him. She gave each of them exactly what they needed, based on her foresight.
@Haplo-san
@Haplo-san Год назад
I think "I'm no men" line was enough information to kill the Witch King, there is no need to dig about the tale of daggers they got by coincidence or by the big plan of Eru Ilúvatar, however you believe. So they have skipped that part of the story in the movie. And both Merry and Eowyn showed the huge pain they got by stabbing him, so that information was also enough to tell that he reflects some kind of thorns damage.

Tolkien was also not at all shy to include the power of fate - including in the Witch-King's own boost of power in the battle.

@@dionnecoburn134 Yes, in those books, those blades came from the Barrow Downs, and were relics thousands of years old, from the Second Age, when the old Northern Kingdom, Arnor, fought against Angmar. Those blades were specifically enchanted to counter the Witch King's necro magic. With all his guards and wards gone, Eowyn's strike to his face could get through.

Frodo left because the trauma of the war and carrying the ring left him unable to just live a normal life in Shire. It's a metaphor for WW1 and PTSD and how many soldiers would end up killing themselves after the war because they were too traumatized to lead normal lives after it
@markcross8649
@markcross8649 Год назад
Yes, but of course the ending makes more sense in the context of the book itself in ‘The Scouring of the Shire” and in the fact that the War of The Ring ended directly outside of Bag End. In a very real sense, Frodo was ultimately defeated by the Ring and completion of the task had to rely on Providence working through the mercy that had been shown to Gollum. His departure from Middle Earth was the inescapable outcome of death redeemed through Grace. All you said is true but Tolkien sublimated these grim realities through his Christian metaphysics.

The book explains more why Frodo had to go at the end... the wound he recieved from the mordor blade in the 1st movie could never heal properly and he could never find peace... its based partly on tolkiens 1st World War experiences, ie the soldiers coming home after war wounded or crippled and never finding contentment...

A couple of quick notes. The wolf's head battering ram, Grond, was named the hammer used by Morgoth, the main bad guy during the first and second age of Middle Earth, creator of the Orcs and Balrogs, and all round nasty person. In the scene where Legolas shoots the Corsairs of Umbar, the ship is crewed by many of the production staff, including those responsible for making all the weapons, props and scenes. The one that gets shot is actually Peter Jackson, director of the movies, who also had other cameos in the previous two movies. The scene wear we see Sam's arm enter the frame holding Sting, like an old fashioned gun slinger, was filmed in Peter Jackson's London apartment two weeks before the film was to be release. It was actually Jackson's arm, with Andy Serkis filming, which then got sent via the internet to the production offices in Wellington, where is was incorporated into the film. Finally, when Gandalf and the eagles fly to Mount Doom to rescue Frodo and Sam, there is a third eagle because Gandalf still held onto the hope the Smeagol would have been spared and would be in need of rescuing and healing. Lastly, thank you for leaving in the bit with your cat getting up close and personal. :D

To help answer some of your questions. Frodo went with Gandalf, Bilbo, Galadriel and Elrond to the undying lands (where the elves originated from) because he still feels the pain from the stab wound he sustained on weathertop, by the witch king. It’s seen as a evil that still pains Frodo long after the quest, despite the ring and all evil being destroyed. As for Sam, don’t think he just let a normal life after that. He became mayor of hobbiton for many years and when he was approaching the end of his life, he was also granted a place in the undying lands. Ultimately he would reunite with Frodo in the undying lands across the sea. As for Gimli and Legolas, Legolas refused to travel to the undying lands unless his best friend Gimli was allowed to accompany him. Gimli was the one and ONLY dwarf to be granted passage to the undying lands, ever. Also did you notice Gandalf came with 3 eagles to collect Frodo and Sam instead of 2 in Mordor? Many people miss it but Gandalf still held onto the belief that Sméagol would be able to win the internal battle between himself and his alter ego Gollum and thus brought a 3rd eagle in order to save Sméagol also. It’s rather sad.

As it is my favorite movie trilogy, I love to watch Lord of the Rings reactions. Several people have already answered your question about why Frodo left at the end. But I am going to add a couple more details. Once the Hobbits returned to the Shire, you could tell by the glances between each other, after they sat down with their ale in the pub, that there was a bit of melancholy from all of them. I interpreted this as them recognizing that the other Hobbits in their village can’t really understand what they have been through, just like many soldiers experience when returning home from war. They are permanently changed from their experience. And some of that is not good changes, even though they did it to save their world. And in Frodo’s case, as the ring bearer, the scars are much deeper and more painful than the others. I love that moment when Frodo stops for a second when he is boarding the ship, and looks back at the other Hobbits. And you see that beautiful smile on his face. It is very reminiscent of the smile on his face when we first see him in Fellowship of the Ring, when he is greeting Gandalf. It is a smile full of joy, and you can even see it in his eyes. To me, this signifies that this journey to the Undying Lands will be the healing that he truly needs. The movie creators often talked about Frodo’s relationship with the Ring being similar in an addiction. You can begin to really see that in the Two Towers. Once Faramir takes the Hobbits hostage, Frodo shows that he is really loosing his control over his relationship with the Ring, which begins to feel very obsessive. And in Return of the King he is really lost, which allows Gollum to easily manipulate Frodo and come between him and Sam. I know that a lot of viewers get very upset with Frodo when he sends Sam away. And while I understand that, it is important to realize how Frodo is truly like an addict at this point, with Gollum taking advantage of that. I also love how Gandalf’s prophecy from Fellowship of the Ring comes true here. Gollum had an important role to play in destroying the Ring. In the end, Frodo was unable to destroy it. The author J.R.R. Tolkien had said that no one would have had the willpower to destroy the Ring. So Gollum taking the Ring from Frodo, and ending up falling into the volcano was fate stepping in to provide the final victory, after all the effort and sacrifice of our heroes up to that final moment. And it probably would not have happened without Gollum. My final comment here is about that moment of Gandalf comforting Pippin when he believed death was imminent. You said in the moment how much you liked that. It is indeed one of my favorite moments, one among many favorite moments from this trilogy. And so many of them come from Gandalf speaking wisdom. Other people have probably mentioned that the author J.R.R. Tolkien was a devout Catholic. His faith was very important to him. And I believe that in so many beautiful moments like that one, his faith shines through. The entire story is imbued with faith and beliefs in good triumphing over evil. At the same time it is never preachy. There are no explicit religious acts in the story, that demonstrate any organized religion. And yet the story is filled with the beauty of faith and fills us an appreciation for the truly good aspects of life. And I think that is a tremendous accomplishment. By the way, what Gandalf is telling Pippin in that moment comes from the end of the story as Frodo is seeing the Undying Lands for the first time. “And the ship went out into the High Sea, and passed on into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seem to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the gray rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores, and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.” Quite a lovely description indeed!

There’s also context for how special it is that the Eagles helped. The eagles are servants of the Valar Manwë (The leader of the Valar, analogous to Zeus; Head of a pantheon of gods) The Valar aren’t allowed to interfere directly with events, as they’re so powerful they would do more harm than good (even Maiar like the Wizards aren’t allowed to use their full power for the same reason) The eagles intervening is essentially divine intervention.

Sam was going to complete the mission when he took the Ring. The movie makes it seem tougher for Sam to give up the Ring than it was. In the book, Sam thought of himelf as the greatest gardnener in the history of the world and then his "plain hobbit sense" kicke din. And he freely gave it up to Frodo.

The movie barely hints at it, and the book isn't much clearer, but Frodo was badly hurt on the Quest, body and soul, and he couldn't really heal in the Shire. I get the idea he didn't want to admit how much he was suffering, especially in writing, and Sam respected his privacy by not writing much about it either, though he must have seen a lot more of it than he describes to us. Elijah Wood uncomfortably rubbing his shoulder on the anniversary of Weathertop is misleading; Sam does tell us the anniversaries of Frodo's three greatest injuries (the knife on Weathertop, the sting of Shelob, and the loss of the Ring) were far more traumatic than that. Frodo usually spent them in bed, in terrible pain, caught in flashbacks so vivid he had trouble remembering where he was. In the Blessed Realm, there was a chance for him to find health, peace, and joy -- to really live again, whereas in the Shire the best he could do was survive, and maybe not even that for much longer. Este, the all-but-divine Lady of Healing; her angelic handmaid Melian, from whom Elrond and Aragorn both inherited their own healing power; and even the land of Tol Eressea itself offered the wounded Ringbearer a unique opportunity to leave his mental, emotional, and physical pain behind and be cured of what would otherwise be quite incurable. Arwen actually gave him her own place on that ship so he could be healed, since she was staying with Aragorn. She told him so before he left Gondor, but it took him two years (four in the movie, for some reason) to get desperate enough to accept the offer, and leave behind everything he'd ever known, forever -- everything except Sam, who came to join him after his children were grown and his Rosie was gone.

Ironically, from the moment he forged the Ring Sauron had doomed himself. Without it, he could have kept coming back forever no matter how many times he was defeated. But he poured so much of himself into the Ring to make it that he could no longer survive apart from its existence. He gave Middle-Earth the means to be rid of him forever. While it didn't seem so at the time, when Frodo put on the Ring at Mount Doom and instantly made Sauron aware of where the Ring was...literally teetering on the edge of destruction...that was the first and last time Sauron felt true terror.

You have a wonderful awareness of the story. And because you are listening you don’t miss things. It’s refreshing. I love the books and movies. Sorry, I don't like leaving more than one comment, but having heard what you had to say afterwards I think some explanation is needed. In LoTR lore, Valinor sits on the westernmost edge of Middle Earth, and is the land where the Valar live, those beings akin to arch-angels that actually built Middle Earth from scratch. A lot of the Elves went to live with them when they first woke, and from that many gained a hidden strength. This is why many Elves were able to withstand the nazgul, because those who had lived in both realms had some power over them. The other aspect of Valinor is that the passage of time brings healing instead of decay, so those with longstanding injuries, such as Frodo received from being stabbed by the Witch King and Shelob, would find relief from their pain. Due to other events that would take too long to detail, it is usually only the elves that are able to go to Valinor, though Frodo and Bilbo, and later Sam, are granted the privilege due to their time as Ringbearers. After Aragorn dies (and is laid to rest in Minas Tirith with Merry and Pippin), Legolas builds a ship and takes Gimli with him, the only dwarf to ever step foot in the Blessed Realm.

Its way clearer in the books, it happens so fast in the films its a little hard to catch but frodo & bilbo went to where *Arwen* *was* going to go the whole time, to take the ships west to the undying lands to live pain free & immortally with the elves...thats why gladriel (kate blanchette) was there & got on the boat...gandalf too, b/c wizards are in the dame genus as elves or some super-complex sitch.

The scene where Bilbo asks about the ring is very important. Not only does it show that the ring's influence still has a hold on them despite being destroyed, it shows that, though he knows better, Frodo can't help but feel the same way as Bilbo. He can't just return to his old life. They are leaving Middle Earth to get closure from those regrets.

Frodo and Bilbo are going to the Undying lands to heal and basically leave forever. The ring-bearers all go and later, if you read the books, Sam goes there too after he is old and Rosie has passed on because he was a ring bearer for a time. You must see the Hobbit as that gives a lot of background as it's a prequel to Lord of the Rings and answers a lot of questions and background lore.

"Sailing to the West" is symbolic to dying for mortal races. That's why Frodo smiles at the end, to show his friends that his morgul wound no longer pains him and he is content to pass on. All ring-bearers are given this treatment, that is why Bilbo is also given the same treatment and later Sam as well.

At the end, at the desk, when frodo was writing in the book, he said to Sam “its been 4 years to the day since weathertop, & its never really healed”....so, that, right there, after the quest, the hobbits did have a “normal” happy ending, 3 years to be together, & celebrate, ect, ect....but, frodo is a little mentally vacant , even here...in the books it was even more pronounced, he was damn near mentally ill, he had to go away to get piece (the undying lands are kind of a metaphor for heaven...& as someone else said, frodo’s shell-shocked mental damage was a metaphor for those who returned from world war 1 all screwed up & physically & mentally damaged).....on top of that ringbearers go to the undying lands, thats what bilbo’s “special honor” was, frodo’s as well....now, as has prob already been said, sam, albeit briefly, sam was a ring-bearer too, so, eventually sam too joined frodo, so, double happy ending, lol.

Frodo's injury never will heal on Middle Earth. He has to leave to get better. Only Ringbearers got the invite from the Elves. So Samwise was also invited even though he was a bearer for a short time. Frodo said, "You will have to be whole for many years..." So when he's old, he too will join them. There's a bit of back story they just couldn't possibly fit into these movies but the books are great.

Frodo leaving is sort of explained, but it´s still hard to really get. He says in his monologue that he can´t go back, some hurts go too deep. You can still see he is mostly sad in the end. He´s still hurting from his wounds, and his internal or mental damage from the ring still pains him. When he says that the Shire "has been saved, but not for me." I take that to mean that he can no longer find peace and joy in the Shire, he can´t go back to his old life. So he leaves with the elves and Gandalf, magical being that can help him deal with the trauma of his journey. Galadriel says in The Two Towers that "the quest will claim his life". Most take that to mean he will die and that she is wrong, but I think she is right. Frodo pays a high price for saving the Shire and his friends and in a sense loses his old life to do so. He is never the same again. Tolkien was in a real war, and this brings a sort of realism to it. You may win, it might be a really great victory in the end, but there´s always a price to pay. Some friends are lost forever like Boromir, and some are damaged for life like Frodo. So it´s a victory mixed with sadness.

There are a few reasons why Frodo left for Valinor, J.R.R. Tolkien's heaven. One was the toll the ring took on him during the war of the ring. Second, was the fading of middle earth. If you read the silmarilion, the general ark of the story of Valinor and middle earth is a downward spiral into more mundanity and less power in the world. The ring bearers of rings power that were given to the elves are all leaving on that last ship. The ring that was given to Kirdan the shipwright he passed on to Gandolf. Elrond and Galadriel are both ring bearers. This symbolizes the passing away of the great powers of middle earth. I hope this helps and isn't too convoluted.

If you watch Elrond closely at the end, you will see a moment when grief fills his expression. He is leaving to go to the Undying Lands without his daughter, and will have to explain what happened to his wife, who has been there for centuries waiting for her husband and children to join her. I think at this point it's still not certain that Elrond's sons would go, and that would have added to his unhappiness.

Such a good trilogy. The amount of feelings it conveys good and bad is just incredible. Another part of the trilogy I love is how well done the huge army battles were conducted. So many things happening at once and it still holds your attention throughout the movies. The way your cat looked up when the pirates asked "you and whos army?" was just hilarious too. Fit with the movie timing really well. Glad you enjoyed the trilogy and hope you continue to have fun watching movies down the line on your channel.

My take on it is Frodo and Gandolf and Bilbo--everyone on the boat--basically sailed off to Heaven. Remember Gandolf's convo with Pippin about dying? They're sailing off into the far green land. So yeah, they're leaving and not coming back. Loved your reactions to these movies. 🙂

A few things to note concerning the overall story: - Gandalf brought a third eagle for Gollum when he rescued Frodo and Sam on Mt Doom. He never gave up hope that Smeagol could be redeemed. He truly is a tragic character. - Sam and Frodo eventually get reunited as Sam also traveled to the Undying Lands after Rosie eventually died at the age of 98. - Merry and Pippen become important figures in the Shire for the next 60 years but eventually, after both of their wives die, they travel back to Rohan and Gondor to visit Eomer, Faramir, and Aragorn one last time. They both die in Gondor and get buried among the Kings and Aragorn, who lived to be over 200 years old, is buried next to them. Obviously, there were a lot of changes from the books, but Peter Jackson and his team really pulled off the greatest movie trilogy of all-time.

Unfortunate that they omitted that Denithor (Boromir and Faramir's) dad had been using one of those seeing stones for years. It is largely the reason Gondor held out for as long as it did. Because Denithor was taking glimpses, spying on Sauron and planning the defenses accordingly. He withstood Sauron's influence for a long time before going mad. Part of the reason Denithor favored Boromir was because he admired Boromir, wanted to think of Boromir the strong charismatic jock as the chip off the old block, even though it was Faramir who was much more like his father with a strong mind, but not much of a warrior.

There's a scene that was omitted in the movie, right after Gollum was defeated and Frodo was sprinting toward the entrance of Mount Doom. Sam was hot to kill Gollum, but seeing him totally defeated, sprawled in the dust, and having himself borne the Ring for a little while, Sam finally pities Gollum and sends him off with a kick in the rear. After Sam runs after Frodo, Gollum turns and follows Sam with the light of madness in his eyes. After all is over and the two Hobbits are waiting for death on the slopes of the volcano, Frodo says, "...do you remember Gandalf's words: 'Even Gollum may have something yet to do?' But for him, Sam, I could not have destroyed the Ring. The Quest would have been in vain, even at the bitter end. So let us forgive him!"

Seems like nobody has yet pointed out that nobody could have ever thrown ghe the ring into the fires of Mt. Doom...not even Sam, because Ring was at the height of its power. Hence, an accident (or fate) could be the only way. Basically, if it wasn't for Gollum, the ring would have never been destroyed. Note that Gandalf said that Bilbo's pity (towards Gollum) may rule the fate of man...and it did. P.S. Some of Gandalf's "powers" center on light, healing, insight etc...and the virtue of pity. Also, the witch king wasn't "easily" killed by Eowyn. It's a prophecy said by Glorfindel, a very powerful elf..."not by the hand of man shall he fall"...hence, the "i am no man" moment 😊 P.P.S. I live for the Taro close up 🩷

Frodo must have been in existential agony hanging from that cliff... he had claimed the Ring as his own, then had it been literally ripped with violence from his body, and he watched it sit on the inevitable brink of destruction -- still existing, still exerting it's power over him and at it's absolute strongest in the place it was forged -- but knowing that it *would* be destroyed. At that moment that must have seemed like the absolute end of the world for him. He made the decision to keep living while the Ring still existed, which took supreme will (or maybe supreme faith). Obligatory 'in the book'.... in the book he didn't struggle with Gollum a second time, so this choice never happened. After biting off Frodo's finger, Gollum simply danced a bit too close to the edge, and fell in. It is considered to be a true miracle; an little nudge by God that turned a bad event into good in spite of all reasonable hope (only a fool's hope) and too unlikely to *not* be a miracle. As Gandalf said in Fellowship, Bilbo was *meant* to find the Ring, Frodo was *meant* to inherit it..... and Gollum still had some part to play (he was *meant* to stumble into the Cracks of Doom). Some people thought this was a questionable change, since it didn't support a main theme of mercy. In the book, it was repeated acts of mercy that ultimately allowed the Ring to be destroyed, by the very person that seemed to covet it the most, and in spite of virtually zero odds of success (Tolkien said that *no one* -- despite their noble intentions, their angelic spirit, their centuries of wisdom -- could have thrown the Ring into the fire, it was just too powerful). In the movie, it was just a kind of an ironic twist, as the Ring was destroyed by two crazed junkies trying to kill each other to possess it. Yes, it's much more dramatic, and adds in more action... it makes for a good movie. But it's certainly not saying what was said in the book. These movies are a *great* adaptation, maybe the best movies ever made. But in comparison to the books, they really come off as cheap Hollywood glitter that sacrifices so much of the beauty and subtlety for over-the-top drama, action, and comedy. I honestly don't mean this as a criticism of the movies, but rather as an endorsement for the books. If you loved the movies for the way it made you think, then the books are 100x better.

Great reaction and love the cat. Will post one for each movie later along with this one. But your reaction was very nice and cool to see, you may not talk much but that is good, your eyes reaction especially when they go wide at certain points like the arrival of Rohan, frodo and Sam, is more meaningful than the over the top reaction of others. Also kudos for you to realize that at the last part, after Gollum bit off the finger, Frodo ran back not to push him but to fight for the ring, which somehow many reactionaries misinterpreted as purposely pushing Gollum off. Great reaction man, one of my favorites you are.

The spider in the movie was called Shelob and that's what Gollem meant when he said 'She could do it' in the end of part 2. And the creatures that the Nazgul wer're riding on were creatures from an older world whose kind, still lingering in forgotten mountains cold under the moon, outlived it's time and there in a hideous eagle's nest hatched this last untimely brood, bent on evil. And Sauron took it and raised it on wild flesh until it was geater than all other things that fly, and he gave it to his servant to serve as his steed. After the ring was destroyed: Frodo left Middle Earth, so that he may be fully healed. He was still able to feel the wound on his arm from the sword at the beginning, plus for being the ring-bearer and it nearly consuming him like it did Gollum. Aragorn returned Gondor to it's former glory, and ruled happily with Arwen for 120 years. He had one son and two daughters. When his time drew near, he chose to take command of his own end. We laid in the House of the Kings in Minas Tirith with Gondor's past rulers and drifted into eternal sleep. Arwen passed one year later. Gimli became the Lord of the Glittering Caves under Helm's Deep, as it was rich with Mithril. He kept his word to Galadriel, and encased the strands of hair within glass and treasured it. Legolas restored the woodlands of Middle-Earth that were ravaged by the war, along with adventuring with Gimli. After Aragorn's death, Legolas made a ship of his own in Ithilien, and left Middle-Earth to cross the sea to reunite with the rest of the elves in the Undying Lands. Gimli crossed the sea with Legolas, due to his close friendship with the elf, and was the only dwarf that was offered that honor. Samwise married Rosie and had 13 children. He was also elected Mayor of the Shire for seven consecutive seven-year terms (49 years.) Afterwards, Sam was given passage to the Undying Lands to reunite with Frodo, as Samwise was also a Ring-Bearer, even for a short time. Pippin became the 32nd Thane of the Shire, and held that position for 50 years. He had one son named Faramir Took I, who later married Sam's daughter. After he retired as Thane, he left with Rohan and Gondor with Merry. He remained there for the rest of his life, and was entombed in the Hall of the Kings, and later moved to be laid to rest alongside Aragorn. Merry was knighted by King Eomer and become Master of Buckland. He married, and wrote a book. He had at least one son. At 102, he returned to Rohan and Gondor with Pippin, dying around the same time as Pippin. He was laid to rest in Gondor with Pippin, and later moved alongside Aragorn.

Sam also leaves middle earth after Rosie dies, Merry and Pippen visit Eomer before his death then got to Gondor and are buried near Aragorn, After Aragorns Death Arwen wanders off never to be seen again. Frodo was wounded by blade, Sting and Bite. His wound from the morgul blade Gandalf thought would eventually make him clear as a glass of water. He went to the Undying Lands of the Valar. Remember elves don’t die they go to the Halls of Mandos and reincarnate after healing. Gimli and Legolas also sail into the west.
