Frodo having to leave Middle-Earth is one of the most tragic tales told in Lord of the Rings. Tolkien, himself a veteran of bloody battles in WWI, surely used the phenomenon of PTSD for his inspiration. Frodo selflessly sacrificed his world, but the pain of his poisoned wound, and the corruption of the Ring, would never truly leave him. The only place he could hope to find peace was in the Undying Lands. It's the sad story of a soldier who leaves home to defend everything he loves, and returns to find "you can never truly come home".
@philippalinton5850
@philippalinton5850 Год назад
The films gloss over this. Frodo's internal suffering, and the spiritual wounding he receives from carrying a demonic talisman for so long, doesn't come over that strongly. Frodo might be better understood by the 'film only' crowd if his heroism hadn't been so undermined in the films. A lost opportunity.

I feel like you pick up a lot more of this upon rewatching. Bilbo, Smeagol, and Frodo all continued to be deeply affected by the ring long after it left their possession. Also, Frodo's determination from the beginning to see even a glimmer of good in Smeagol because of how much the ring affected him.

Also, it's very important to remember Frodo's decision to spare Sméagol, and how that ended up being the downfall of Sauron. It wasn't violence or power that led to Sauron's end; it was friendship, compassion, and mercy. Truly the only ways to defeat evil.

Every time I see Eomer's reaction when he finds his sister in the battlefield, it tears my heart out. In the whole two movies he is fearless, totally fearless, even when he is facing a thousand orcs and a dozen of oliphants. His face when he is above Eowin waiting for Aragorn to heal her, it is the face of a 6 year old fearing of darkness. I love his character.

Don't worry you two. Sam will see Frodo again. In the books, the option and honor of sailing to the undying lands was given to all bearers of the one ring. Sam, though it was only for a short amount of time, was a ring bearer. A boat was left for him in the harbor. He eventually becomes Mayor of Hobbiton, he and Rosie successfully raise their children, and after Rosie dies, he sails to the undying lands. Gimili gets to go too. First, he shows Legolas all the most beautiful places in the dwarf realms and Legolas shows him special elf places. Then they build a boat and sail to the undying lands together.

Eh, all of those were rumors, not actually confirmed in the books or appendices. They just became sayings really. After all, they missed the last ship to leave middle earth. Frodo and Smeagol can't though each makes an extraordinary effort to fight & remain a Hobbit. Smeagol sadly has never any help at all to deal with his pain. Which is why to me "Gollum's Song" by the goddess like Emiliana Torrini is a much-needed followup reaction. It always pleases me when I see people watching these films for the first time and by the end their coming to the realization that these are the finest films ever made. I remember a year after the ROTK came out, I was sitting with a bunch of friends and we all declared these films to be the greatest ever made. The production of this trilogy was a perfect storm of events: you had an unestablished director when it came to making blockbusters, eager to prove himself worthy; you had an equally enigmatic cast, with Ian McKellen as the only well known face; you had the enormous challenge of integrating CGI, with practical effects in an unprecedented manner. And it came together so amazingly well that to this day it still boggles the mind. Peter Jackson ended up as the perfect man for the job. If you had Spielberg, and Lucas I seriously doubt they could have done better. I don't think they would have been as devoted to Tolkien's vision, and would have added too much of their own ideas. The cast is perhaps the most perfect fit for a story ever assembled and that is no exaggeration. Can anyone see someone else as Gandalf other thank McKellen? Or someone besides Viggo as Aragorn? Two of the greatest Tolkien artists, Alan Lee and John Howe as well as countless others were instrumental in bringing Middle Earth to life. This was a true Fellowship of the Ring. One part that really gets me is that in the end Frodo couldn't resist and you can see the disappointment in himself, especially when he's hanging from the cliff, wondering if his life is worth it or even when everyone's bowing to him. That's such a heavy weight to carry the rest of your life, knowing you wouldn't make the right choice all on your own. I just see his expression while he's hanging, wondering if he should let go, as just exhaustion. In the moment he is so incredibly exhausted, physically and mentally, that he still almost just wants to let it all end. That one last bit of effort it would take to save himself from sharing Gollum's fate even seems too much to him. Sure, I think in part he realizes his own failing to dispose of the ring willingly, but I just see raw exhaustion and pain in his eyes. He's tempted to just allow himself to die, not out of shame or guilt, but just being completely spent from a whole year of carrying the ring.

In the books what happened to Merry and Eowyn was much clearer. When striking down the wraiths they were more or less spiritually and psychologically injured in a terrible way. The true king was a healer, and thus Aragorn could heal them. They glossed over much of this in the films (time constraints). There was a lot of stuff in The Houses of healing with Eowyn and Faramir as well. Another bit worth reading in the books is Sam’s rescue of Frodo. You see more clearly how the ring tried to tempt Sam (and failed). Only Sam and Bilbo ever relinquished the ring freely.

I always like to point out that according to Tolkien himself it would have been impossible for anyone to have thrown the ring into the fires of Mt. Doom. Gandalf couldn't have done it. Elrond couldn't have done it. It was far too strong when in the heart of Mt. Doom. Frodo's job was the get the ring there. Thankfully Bilbo showed pity to Gollum all those years ago so that Gollum could play his part in the Ring's destruction.

You guys are hands down one of my favorite channels to react to this incredible trilogy! I’m going to give you a little clarification as to why Frodo and Gandalf must leave at the end. First of all, the legendarium written by Tolkien is so vast and detailed that even these excellent and very long movies couldn’t explain all there is to explain! Tolkien created a whole mythology, history and creation story for Middle-Earth. It’s got it’s own deities. The All Father, the god who created M-E is named Eru Illuvatar. He rules with other demi-gods/godlike entities called The Valar. Eru created the whole universe by signing. The first creatures he brought to life are the Elves. This is one of the reasons why they are so ethereal and majestic. They are the All Father’s fist children, the oldest creations of Middle-Earth. They were created before the sun and the moon! Like Galadriel (the blonde woman in this movie). She is one of the oldest elves to still be in Middle-Earth. Since elves are immortal, they can enter the land of the Valar. A place called Valinor, also known as The Undying Lands. Elves can never die. If they are “killed” in battle, their spirits go to Valinor where they can get reincarnated and healed. The Valar gave a special permission for all Ring Bearers to enter Valinor. Bilbo was a ring bearer. So was Frodo. And later, Sam is also invited to Valinor since he carried The One Ring for a while, when Frodo was paralyzed by Shelob (the big spider). Speaking of Shelob, if you think she’s scary…….boy oh boy you haven’t met her MOTHER! Ungoliant is nightmare fuel and I’m glad there’s no onscreen adaptation of her yet! But, back to Frodo. The One Ring corrupted his heart forever. Even after victory, he couldn’t go back to being a jolly Hobbit. The PTSD and emotional scarring were just to much for him. So was the physical scarring. He got stabbed by a Nazgûl’s blade, creating a wound that can never fully heal. And there’s also the fact that Frodo feels heavy guilt. In the heart of Mount Doom, he didn’t actually throw in The Ring. He put it on his finger and wanted to keep it for himself. He never forgave himself for that. So, when The Valar invited him to join them and the elves to the Undying Lands he accepted the offer. There, he would be able to heal his soul. It’s a bittersweet ending, but I think it’s the best ending for such an epic tale. I think that Tolkien who fought in WWI really understood the permanent emotional scarring that are left in hero’s hearts even after victory…

Oh! I realized that I forgot to talk about why Gandalf must also leave! So, since we established that deities look after Middle-Earth, let’s talk about the creatures Eru created to help him in his task. The Maiar. They are like angelic beings. Probably the most powerful creatures after The Valar. When Eru Illuvatar created the world, one of The Valar got jealous of his power. He was named Melchor. He wanted the power to create life like Eru. So he corrupted the original creation song. But since, in the paraphrases words of Tolkien, “evil cannot create”, all of Melchior’s creations were twisted and dark. Even so, Melchor managed to rally some people against The All Father and The Valar. Many Maiar became fallen angels, siding with the evil Demi-god Melchor, who changed his name to Morgoth. He became the original Dark Lord. One particular fallen angel became his most devout follower: Sauron! Some of the fallen angels decided to take a monstrous form. They became Balrogs,great demons of flammes and shadows. But the Maiar who were still on the All Father’s side remained faithful. Eru sent them away from Valinor and into Middle-Earth to guide all of his creations on the right path. Since Maiar are powerful angel like creatures, they decided to take a less imposing, more trustworthy form on M-E. So, instead of a monstrous form, they decided to shape their bodies like that of wise looking old men. So, the evil Maiar became Balrogs and the good ones became Wizards! The order of the Wizards was commended to guide creatures of M-E, but never to dictate nor rule over them. They were to be helping hands, but never leaders. They were five. One White Wizard. One Grey. Two Blue and one Brown. This is why Saruman The White’s betrayal is so disheartening. He was the head of the order of the Wizards. He, more than anyone else, should have known better. And yet he sought power. In the mines of Moria, Gandalf The Grey was the only member of the Fellowship who could fight the Balrog… because despite their very different appearance, they were both the exact same type of creatures! Unfortunately, that fight claimed Gandalf’s life. His soul went back to his home in Valinor. Back to Eru Illuvatar. But since The All Father had sent him to M-E to fight Sauron, he reincarnated him to complete his mission. After the destruction of The Ring, Gandalf could finally go back to where he came from. Through all his adventures and travels, Gandalf The Grey impacted the lives of so many creatures in M-E. He walked the earth for many centuries, staying amongst every single creatures created by Eru. That’s why he had so many names. In Valinor, his original name was Olorin. Amongst men and Hobbits, he was known as Gandalf. But the men of Rohan also referred to him as Greyhame. Elves called him Mithradir. He had other nicknames such as Stormcrow, The Grey Pilgrim and many, many more. All in all, Gandalf is an unforgettable creature!

Frodo's leaving for the Undying Lands (to me) was partly due to the physical scars (like the stab wound from the Witch-King that never healed) but largely due to the psychological trauma he endured from carrying the ring as well as the guilt from trying to take the ring for himself despite knowing what would happen if he did. I'm reminded of soldiers who fought in both World Wars who just wanted to be able to return home but when they did, their towns and neighborhoods seemed so tiny and there wasn't anyone they could talk to about what they went through besides other soldiers.

Watching even reactions to this has tears pouring out of me like a small child. You two are by far and away the best reactors I have seen to date. With the power of this story and the themes it provokes, the wonderful mind of J.R.R. Tolkien will live forever through this trilogy long after the likes of George R.R. Martin, J.K. Rowling, and Brandon Sanderson have faded into the obscurity of time. If you find the time, please read the books. (I believe everyone should at least once) I do not exaggerate when I say they've changed my life for the better and inspired me to have the courage of Sam, the wisdom of Gandalf, the will of Frodo, and the unequalled nobility of Aragorn. so they see this comment towards the top: Remember to think of this movie as a giant allegory for the journey of life, both on a personal level and also as a human adventure. Every character, group of people, conflict, torment, bravery, all of it was intended to show you in extreme terms human nature and what it takes to overcome much of it. One of the most important characters was gollum. Tolkien hinted in many of his works and an interview I read a while back that Gollum represents that good/evil inclination WE ALL HAVE inside of us. Along our life journey its that inner voice telling your nature what to do. So instead of seeing Gollum as a physical character, think of him as the evil inclination thing t TRICKS YOU into doing the wrong thing or failing in your mission. The hobbits represent the innocent element in the world. They are meant to be like children. Children have innate innocence that is beaten out of us through the harshness of life, drama, conflict, politics etc. Children also have idealism greater than adults do. They still believe deeply in highly optimistic ways. Never have you seen hobbits love the faith. The goal of every other character and army was to defend the world that the habits still saw the innate goodness of the world. This story is about protecting the most innocent of all in the world. The eye of Sauron as well was very unique. The idea of the all seeing eye was also a Tolkien hint as to the hidden nature of evil in this world always keeping an eye on the happenings of the world. If you flip over a dollar bill you will start to make the connection of what LoTR is really about and how it applies to the secret nature of those who rule over society as well. The "eye of providence" which was part of the official seal of the United States at some point was hijacked by those who seek to control. Tolkien used it as the ultimate symbol of evil both in his story and ours. Many other points I can make but a few to think about: The ring did not melt UNTIL Frodo took the hand of Sam who was there to save him. That allegory alone tells you what the key to destroy evil is, to have ONE good friend by your side in life. Until you have that there is no chance of desiring whatever the ring represents. Frodo falling over the cliff with Gollum also represents how close that evil inoculation can take you to your grave. In the end there are no winners. Another vital point I loved the most is that evil ALWAYS starts out with the upper hand, it never sleeps, it comes for your throat before you even know its coming. Also, Frodo had to go West because the stab he took by the wraith was going to kill him if he stayed. Sam was given the final task of finishing the story because most stories in history are written by witnesses who saw up front the heroism of others. Last point and my FAVORITE line in the movie (besides "my friends, you bow to no one", is when Merry and Pippen are arguing with the Ents (trees) who refused to fight Soroman because it wasn't their conflict, Merry then responds "BUT YOU ARE PART OF THIS WORLD". That's powerful because in today's world, no one truly cares about conflict, suffering of others outside their immediate sphere. By far that is the line I quote the most. Enjoy!

Theoden adapts and improves upon a medieval poem known as 'the Wanderer:' 'Where now the horse, where now the rider? Where now the armed warrior, where now the revels of the hall?' Théoden is even more great in the books. Merry crawls to him as well before he dies, and says he is sorry for disobeying his command and riding with the army. Théoden says to him "Fret not. It is forgiven. Great heart will not be denied. " Then Thëoden apologizes to Merry that now they can't sit together in Thëodens hall and talk about Herblore.

The older I get the harder Theoden hits home for me. Just the sadness this man carries around that defines him the entire time we see him. It becomes clear early in the second movie that all he wants is to die, but he has a responsibility handed down by generations of his forefathers that he just doesn't have it in him to throw out. When he dies its a really emotional moment for me, because I'm equally happy and sad for him. His heart was broken when his son died - to hear him say my "body is broken" is almost a relief.

I always cry my eyes out watching these films- even did watching this. It's such a perfect story. Frodo left Sam Bag End, the Baggins family home, and Sam went on to become the Mayor of Hobbiton for several decades and the most respected man in the Shire. Merry and Pippin remained loyal to their oaths and eventually journeyed east into Rohan and Gondor. Gimli became Lord of the Glittering Caves (the caves under Helm's Deep) and eventually sailed into the Undying Lands with Legolas- he was known as "Gimli Elf-Friend". Aragorn lived to 210 years old and brought a new Golden Age to Middle-Earth under his leadership. He and Arwen eventually travelled to Arnor (the Northern Kingdom near the Shire) and reunited the two kingdoms. He met with Sam as old friends after many years.

Just so you know it nearly killed us to wait four more days for the other half... On Shelob - director Peter Jackson had a deathly fear of spiders. So he made Shelob such that she was the sum of all his fears, and did a darn good job. If you have the Extended editions, they tell on each how they made the movie. It's almost as good as the movie itself. They put their heart into it, and had many fortuitous and spontaneous events that made it even better. Check it out. Do the live!

Frodo's ending, as sad as it was, was his 'reward' for saving Middle Earth. On the other hand, he was like a soldier back from war, who had seen too much evil to fully recover. The author J.R.R. Tolkien fought on the Somme in WW1 and lost literally all of his closest friends. He wrote the Hobbits as comrades who fought together and returned, and nobody could understand their bond, or what they had been through. That's what makes the ending so bittersweet. Frodo leaves at the end because after such a traumatic experience he could never return to his old life again. He will never be the same after what he went through, a part of himself never returned from the mountain, a part of himself stayed there forever. And this experience affected him so much he couldn't continue with his old life. This is a real thing, this kind of trauma is something that happens in real life to people who go thought experiences that really affects them. There are cases of war survivors who could never go back to their home and families again and went to live by themselves somewhere else. Or people who had gone through extreme journeys that almost cost their lives, ín a way those experiences did cost their lives. That's why they go away, and that's why Frodo has to go.

One last note: If you want to know about the Elves, Amber, there's a book for that! _The Silmarillion_ was published a couple of years after Tolkien died, and it contains the legends he wrote about the origins of... well, everything. It begins with the creation of the world, and goes on to tell how the world was ordered and then how the Children came into it, first Elves, and then Men. (No one knows where hobbits came from.) It covers many thousands of years (don't worry, it's only a couple of hundred pages), and tells the story of how the Elves made their kingdoms. It's a big, beautiful, sad story of light and dark and betrayal and beauty and war. An entire history and mythology invented by one man (as a setting for the languages he created as a hobby, can you believe it). If you want to know about the Elves, you'll find everything there. :)

It’s the perfect conclusion to Theoden’s arc: the one king who was brainwashed by the enemy, woke up to find his kingdom basically overrun, and who has been doubting his allies/himself at every turn, now taking on the armies of Mordor not just on the front line but in front of the front line.
