The purpose of Exodus 17:8-16 is to record the events of Israel’s military victory over Amalek before they came to Mount Sinai. In this account, Israel was victorious as long as Moses held up the staff of God toward heaven. When Moses’ hands grew weary, Aaron and Hur gave him aid by holding his hands up for him. In this, we see that the LORD provides help for His people through His power and His people.
