This is the story of the mother of a sixteen-year-old Southern California hot-rodder whose father reappears after abandoning the family fifteen years earlier.
Loretta’s co-star in this episode is Alan Hale Jr, who plays her remarried former husband Leon Dickerson who returns to see his grown son, Scott (played by Norman Oldstead) and asks the boy to come live with him and his current wife in Chicago.
Scott’s mother, Virginia (played by Loretta Young) is leery of the invitation. In flashbacks she reminisces about her life with and without Leon.
At first Scott is intrigued with his father’s offer, but in the end he proves to his mother that he is a happy well-adjusted teenager who is welt on his way into manhood.
Scott is portrayed by Norman Oldstead, born Norman Tennyson Ollestad in Los Angeles in 1935, who was already known for his appearances on The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show by 1954. He tragically died on February 19, 1979 when the small chartered plane he, his girlfriend and young son, Norman Ollestad Jr., were on flew into a snow storm and struck an 8600 foot mountain near San Bernardino, California. He was 43.
Alan Hale, Jr. was the son of major movie character actor, Alan Hale Sr. Hale Jr.'s television career, which spanned four decades, was most noted for his co-starring role on the 1960s series Gilligan's Island. Hale died on January 2, 1990 at age 68. His body was cremated, and his ashes were sprinkled into the Pacific Ocean
Also look for an appearance by popular character actress Frances Bavier playing the part of Aunt Marty. She is best known for her role of Aunt Bee on The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry R.F.D. from 1960-70. Aunt Bee logged more Mayberry years (ten) than any other character. She won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Comedy Actress for the role in 1967. She appeared in several Loretta Young Show episodes.
