This week's episode looks at two lost Dalek productions, neither of which were actually "Doctor Who" episodes.
A pilot episode of a Dalek spinoff series which Terry Nation tried to launch, and we look at how the paperwork may - or may not - have influenced Doctor Who.
And the Out of the Unknown episode called Get Off My Cloud featured the Daleks in a dreamworld, but is lost from the archives.
If you've loved our first season and want more, please consider supporting us on Patreon, where we're posting behind-the-scenes stuff and research updates, and you can gain access to early drafts of new episodes and get mentioned! 👉 / dalek6388

This was my childhood - I was deeply involved in the shows - via both imagination and the fact that my Father worked on DrWho and Out of the Unknown. Indeed, I was almost in Out of the Unknown myself - but my heart wasn't loud enough so a special effect had to be used instead. I very clearly remember the Gun scene from "out', and the 'Out' robots in "who' but I never knew about the telephone door. Later, I worked at BBC Enterprises myself and edited the Mind Robber Ents release. I remembered the white horse from TX so well that i convinced the producer to let me use the full outro shots and the full intro shots of it - as they were different, the original plan was to lose one of them for tightness... but, my argument - that I remembered it so other fans would too - won the day. Great to se it in this video too. VERY well done. I love it.

Fascinating. So Nation didn't own the props for ego or kitch reasons. There was a real money aspect. And that explains why he kept hiring them out for public events, to recoup some of his cost. It still boggles the mind why the BBC didn't buy the rights along with the original Dalek script.
@Sol-Cutta
@Sol-Cutta Месяц назад
Because they didn't realise they would be anything bigger or more popular than Any number of their other 'monsters' and in house creations. I should imagine that's the reason ? I find it hilarious that tony Hancock and Terry were friends and he used to go and sleep (without sleeping much) round Tony's and it was here he fleshed out his daleks with the help of tony Hancock who no doubt suggested the plunger ends and eye stalk...definitely nation who suggested upside down shuttlecock which Hancock found hilarious.

@gpalmerify

A real shame Destroyers wasn't made and picked up by ABC, back then, there was an automatic demand for any English media productions in the US. Many of us relied on PBS (Public Television) to watch Doctor Who and British comedy series.

I would also like to point out how it was a different time. Nowadays even authors who will never have a chance at writing for film or tv will ponder on what they will do with the movie rights of what they write, but we wouldn't have the history of rights battles if there weren't people to whom this stuff happened as the first precedent. And they didn't have the internet back then, researching that kind of stuff would have been tedious.

Now that we appear to be at the end, can I just say what a wonderful exposition of truly obsessive Doctor Who fandom this has been. I consider myself a reasonably acquainted fan of both Classic and Nuwho, but even I look at the CSI forensics involved in this and go, "Oh, dude". But in a good way. This is obsession from love and I find something incredibly beautiful about it, even if I won't ever get to that level myself!

16:15 flim clip of the Dalek trundling outside a shop with a bridge in the background was filmed in Uxbridge at the junction of Rockingham Road/Waterloo Road with the bridge wall to St. John's Rd in the background. The two houses and shop are still there and look the same, the building on the right has since been demolished.. The Dolphin pub (not in the film clip) is on the opposite side of the road). Ive been on a long search for the last 15 years for a short film shown on BBC2 in the last 80s and the 'Out of the Unknown' section reminded me to make a comment here in the hope someone knows what it is I am looking for! It was a short film, in BnW set on an island. There was a child who lived on a submarine (which looked a bit like the Nautilus from the Disney version of 20,000 LUTS). The child is friends with a Chewbacca looking type guy and a teenage pirate. They are on a quest to free the childs mother, who doesn't remember she has a son.

Thanks for your help, as it stands I was more interested in seeing the Daleks themselves and how they were worked into the act rather than the actors in blackface more than anything else. I have seen, thanks to RU-vid, a few of the other acts that they did for their little show and while I am not racist I must admit to having a morbid fascination with such media (eg 'Tintin in the Congo') granted I may be somewhat desentised due to my repeated viewings of old films plus the fact it is seen as taboo does often draw me too that kind of media, but the historical context of the times it was made in has always interested me greatly plus the kind of thinking on the part of the original audiences of any era of which my interests would have been presented to interests me as well as I feel that understanding such things helps me enjoy old media a lot better. I would recommend such thinking to anyone who wants to lets say, watch an old horror film on its own merrits rather than see it as 'old rubbish'. Happy Times and Places!

Excellent work, thank you. I really like the music at the begining and end of the video (starting at 40 seconds). Is this an original piece too? Is there anywhere it can be heard or downloaded please? Cheers :)

It’s the Death to the Daleks incidental music done in the style of Seven Nation Army by the white stripes. It was arranged and performed for us by Graeme Allen. He has some music from the series on his channel but I don’t think the theme is available separately as yet.

@@Dalek6388 No no, that's not the piece I'm referring to. The music that starts at 40 second into the presentation, not the theme music :)

Hi, Doctor Who's Tardis. Was the Police box they use in Dixon of Dock Green. a TV show about a friendly Police man called Dixon solving crimes and helping people in his show. And he used a Police box to call the Police Station to have people he locked up in the Police box. Picked up. As Doctor Who was made on a budget. They found the Police Box. And got it for there show. Because Dixon of Dock Green had finished.

I think that may be a myth. I’m fairly sure that the DW box was made specially for the show.

What memories do you have of it? Can you recall how many Daleks they had there?

@@Dalek6388 I remember there being one grey dalek on day we went, it was towards the end of the exhibition, although there was an operator in the dalek he appeared tired and didn't move about much, you couldn't get close due to crowds of other kids. The dome would swivel and the eye would point at a kid who would run away screaming. There was also an ice warrior and a yeti they appeared to have been stuffed and left in enclosures behind barriers. As an adult I made my own cyberman outfit, as a child we'd visited St Paul's Cathedral and walked down the steps at outside, seeing the cybermen invading a place I had already been to made an impression on me. My cyberman although not accurate is instantly recognised as a 1970's cyberman.

@@Dalek6388 Although my 9 yr old self was disappointed with the Dr Who exhibit at Olympia I can still remember it, I'm sure there were loads of other really interesting things to look at and do that day but I can't remember them. I already knew the difference between reality and fiction, to suspend disbelief we needed to be able to role play but there were just too may kids passing through the exhibit on too many days for the illusion to remain fresh. You didn't get the chance of a personal interaction with the dalek. Video games hadn't yet been invented but we didn't get the chance to hold ray guns or fly space ships.

The 1968 Boys and Girls Exhibition was reported on BBC SE Region magazine show Town & Around in the just after the 6pm News slot that would be occupied by Nationwide in 1969. They showed the Daleks and other Dr Who exhibits as well as other fun but forgotten stuff. The film was aimed at parents to take their children while encouraging children to pester them. I wonder if this infomercial still exists.

Your RU-vid post was unavailable suddenly yesterday mid-comment. Anyway - 1) I just find Nation's behaviour was outrageous, after all the BBC designed the Daleks, gave them their voices etc and the platform for their success! 2) I am amazed BBC 2 had any interest in The Destroyers , I can't see how it would fit their remit.
