Tucked away in a corner of the South Mountain Park & Preserve in Phoenix, Arizona is a mysterious remains of a building that no one knows the true purpose of. There's many ideas about who built the "Lost Ranch" and why, and we'll discuss some of them while hiking through a quiet corner of the Park.
TRAIL INFORMATION: The "Lost Ranch Loop" is an informal five mile loop with roughly 1,200 ft. of elevation gain that starts at the Pyramid Trailhead, near the southwestern corner of South Mountain Park. The Park has a lot of intersecting trails, so I'd recommend downloading the AllTrails route beforehand so you can follow along.
If you follow the AllTrails route, you'll hit the Ranch ruins about 1.2 miles in. Hiking to the Ranch is easy; just about anyone who can handle uneven terrain can get there. The full loop should only be attempted by people with a moderate amount of hiking experience-- difficulty-wise, it's comparable to other local trails like Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak, or Tom's Thumb.
