Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, overcame a debilitating childhood illness and overcame profound personal tragedy by engaging himself in arduous physical challenges, an experience which came to shape his much of his personal and cultural worldview.
Today, we'll explore T.R.'s concept of "the strenuous life" while hiking through the Mogollon Rim in Tonto National Forest, near Payson, Arizona.
TRAIL INFORMATION: The Derrick Trail is a six mile out-and-back located off Forest Service Road 289 near Kohls Ranch. Road to the trailhead is paved, but there's no water or trash pickup at the trailhead, so plan to pack in water and pack out your trash.
The end of the Derrick Trail is unremarkable, but it connects to the Highline Trail which offers some of the best views in the region. If you take a left at the fork at the end of Derrick Trail and continue for about a mile, you'll hit the overlook I filmed at the end of this video.

The original rough rider! I served in a unit that was named in honor of Teddy Roosevelt. I dare you to read some of his top quotes and not be amazed at how applicable they are too modern America. Great video homage to an amazing person.

I agree! Roosevelt's beliefs about the strenuous life and conservation of natural spaces are even more important today than they were in his day.

Seeing those words in his writing makes the history feel so human. I can’t imagine the level of heartbreak he endured, nor the strength it took to overcome it.

I really like the history and hiking theme you have going on here. I try to do something similar up here in northern Ontario. You are an outstanding story-teller. I'm on board. Greetings from Canada. 👍🍁

Thank you so much! Learning about the places I’m exploring and the people who explored them makes hiking all the more fun for me. I like that you explore a corner of Canada we don’t hear much about in the U.S. I can’t wait to see more of your adventures!

Oh, that X he made in his journal and what he wrote was so sad. Just watched this video and really found it inspiring! I subscribed to see more.

There’s something so humanizing about seeing the words written in his own handwriting. Thanks for watching, I just subscribed to your channel too!

I appreciate it! Learning editing is definitely a work in progress; I’m a lot less talented at it than Brittany is- she does the editing for our longer videos 😅 Thank you for watching!

This made me want to read about Teddy Roosevelt too. What book about him would you recommend the most?

“TR in the Badlands” is definitely a good read, by my favorite is “The River of Doubt” by Candice Millard. It’s how Roosevelt overcame a bout of depression late in life by co-commanding an expedition to chart one of the last unmapped rivers in the Amazon Rainforest, in his 60s!
