In this video we investigate one of Manchesters lost rivers. The River Cornbrook. This is part 3 and we follow its route in an underground culvert in Manchester. The route goes through Hulme and Moss Side. In order to see the route of the river when it ran open we look at old maps and see how Moss Side was a rural part of Manchester in the early 1800's and late 1700's. We see that Emmeline Pankhurst was born in Moss Side very close to where the Cornbrook runs. Looking at old archive photographs we can see how Manchester has changed during the Industrial revolution. In the underground river in the underground culvert we see architecture from the Victorian and Edwardian periods. We also learn that Thomas De Quincey lived in a house in Greenheys in his Childhood by the Cornbrook River. This is a History of Manchester Documentary style urbex vlog.

Martin, your use of old vs new maps fades, old B&W photos, and google birds-eye really brings the story home, you have come so far in so little time. You and your team picked such a lovely spot for snacks and a brew, good job. Your editing of above ground video narration and underground "in the brook" video flows together so well. The image at 46:03 should be titled "The A-Team" mike

Martin, I found a perfect location..... The Lock Stock. Lock Stock is the primary downstream overflow system for the Manchester Interceptor network. It sits between the terminus of the 14ft x 10ft Ovoid Outfall Sewer from the City and beginning of the 10ft Circular Outfall Sewer which flows to Davyhulme.@@MartinZero

Great video Martin. Many thanks. Another famous resident of Greenheys was Sir Charles Halle (of orchestra fame). When he arrived in Manchester in 1853 his address was Greenheys; by 1861 in was 10 Greenheys; in1871 in was 36 Greenheys Lane; 1881 it was 56 Greenheys Lane; and when he died in 1895 it was 70 Greenheys Lane.

The other club was called the" NILE" Also interesting that the Corn brook was also known as the Blackbrook. As kids growing up in Openshaw we used to play on grass hilly area called "Blacky Brook which had a stream that ran at the bottom. Watching your video I know now that the steam came from the river which came from the direction of Ashton Old Road bridge, where we used to also visit to catch tiddlers. Sadly that river was drained.

Great video as always. Loved the part about De Quincey. I visited Bolton recently to go and look at some Fred Dibnah stuff, and could see Manchester in the distance, with all its high rise buildings. I love how you’ve highlighted in this video the rural past of this city, and bringing back to life, a lost waterway, that many people who walk above it everyday, won’t know of its existence, but once upon a time, would have been a babbling brook at the heart of quintessential English life in a time forgotten long ago. Cheers.

Just got round to watching this as I wanted to enjoy it to the full. Cornbrook 1 got me, as I often worked in the Pomona dock and one of the last jobs I delivered to was the large block on the corner of Bridgewater Way and Princess Street. Now, in this episode, I realise that I parked over the route of the Cornbrook and opposite the site of de Quincy's bridge. The spot where you're standing at 40:25. I delivered most of the supporting steelwork for the new building. Little knowing what was beneath ,E.

I was working at the bus depot when they were widening Princess Rd in the 80s. They uncovered a small culvert opposite the school next door and the surveyors came in the depot asking if it was on any of our plans. It was just below ground level and upsetting their work. I don't know how it was diverted, but as we know the road was built

Exceptional work, even measured against you high standards, Martin. My maternal grandparents lived on Radnor Street when it was mostly terraced houses and I still have quite vivid memories of regular visits when I was a small boy in the 1950s. Obviously I was unaware of the subterranean aspects of the city then but watching your video with a map of the city and Mr Ashworth's book in front of me was a fascinating experience. I still have an old engineer's map of the confluence of the Medlock and Irwell. If you would like it to add to your archive it is yours for the asking .
