The thing I always liked with the first two Herbie movies is the way they showed the villains defeated in the end. Not in a typical Disney fashion, but rather How-the-Mighty-Have-Fallen kind of fashion. In Thorndyke's case, he's lost his business to Mr. Wu and is reduced to an employee, with his wealth gone as well. Seeing him and Havershaw, his former second in command, putting new oil into the unseen car he above them (possibly Herbie) illustrates that the two men on top are now lower in priority than the car they are servicing. Must add that Havershaw speaking his mind and retaliating the oil spray shows that now that he and his former boss are now down and on equal level, he doesn't have to take it from him anymore.
@@carlbirtles4518 In a way, it shows Tang Wu and the others in a positive light. Thorndyke still has a job, so he's not struggling like Jim and Tennessee were at the start of the movie. So humbling as it is, it's not a terrible ending for him. His punishment really fits the crime, so to speak, because TECHNICALLY Thorndyke never broke the law (well, one case of Assault on Jim but Jim grabbed him multiple times and threatened him) andTang Wu still gets to deal out those gorgeous automobiles. Though, hopefully with more respect than Thorndyke treated his.
@@thequietestengineI’d say Thorndyke broke several laws. Many of the tactics he used to force Herbie off the road could’ve killed Jim, Carole, and Tennessee.
@@12classics39 Thats why I said TECHNICALLY, and as it was during a race where they all accepted the terms, yes it was in bad sport but how he was punished feels fine to me. Humbled, but treated better than he treated others in the past.
Its sad to think all these actors excluding michelle lee are no longer with us, i was 5 when i first saw this and all were still living it up at that time
Are u crazy. Who the hell is interested in who died and who is alive. U are insane. Do not post all this absurd comments. Don't know your real name but Herbie Fan53 u should not post this. Just shut ur goddamn mouth
I like to think Mr. Wu is the reason for Jim having gone to Europe racing foreign cars in the sequel "Herbie Rides Again" - Mr. Wu had received a contract to import a new series of European racing cars and sent Jim over there to try them out.
No, the reason why Jim isn't in Rides Again is because he was sent out to Europe which leads to Monte Carlo. That was the point of the comment from 1987AnimeBoy
The ending of this movie has a crazy coincidental meaning for me: in one of my parents' wedding pictures, they were in the back seat of their wedding present: a white VW Beetle. Just like Herbie. Maybe that's why the movie has a lot of meaning to me. I loved watching all the Herbie films when I was a kid.
The best car movie that always be gratefull to see !!...special thanks to the genious that made Herbie 🚗 !!!....my child age have the best time with this awsome VHS movie!!.. thanks Dad!!🥇🤙🏆🎥📺📼🎶
This film is truly iconic. It is a masterpiece and everyone in it was truly memorable. Everyone is gone since this legendary film was released since 1968, bar Michelle Lee. But regardless of whether they’re here or not, this movie is cemented as one of the greatest in film history.
Fun fact: There was going to be another kiss, it was already storyboarded and filmed, but was cut out. Thankfully, that deleted kiss still exists today and hasn't been lost.
Grew up watching Herbie. Any time we went on vacay from SoCal to SF I would always bug my parents to go down Lombard Street and other Herbie related places. Memories…
38 years Jim sent Herbie to a village county as he doesn't use it anymore with a note in its glovebox. In Herbie Fully Loaded the note you see in Herbie's glove box which was read by Herbie was written by Jim
Joe Flynn also appeared in the subsequent Kurt Russell films: 1. The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes 2. The Strongest Man In The World 3. The Barefoot Executive
The final scene with Jim and Carole is perfect because Herbie is, at his core, *The Love Bug.* That’s the title of the movie for a reason. Herbie may be great in a race, but his greatest joy comes from taking care of these two as they start their new life together. And that is precisely why this film never needed any sequels.
Poor Tennessee, his look from 1:18-1:20 as he's saying bye to Herbie is like he's saying "I will never see my friend Herbie again" and I'm sure Herbie needed a friend in life which is why he became friends with Paco on "Herbie Goes Bananas."
Of course he saw Herbie again. Jim and Tennessee were best friends, and Herbie was Jim’s car. (I don’t accept the sequels, this movie never needed any; the particular characters and relationships that form because of Herbie are crucial to the story, and the sequels lose that soul by making Herbie a mere sentient racecar when he is in fact so much more than that.)
@@12classics39 It's unknown if Tennessee saw Herbie again because on the second film titled "Herbie Rides Again", his aunt named Mrs. Steinmetz mentioned that her home used to be Tennessee's home but, Tennessee moved out of the house to a different country to be closer to his guru where for that, maybe Jim and Tennessee felt out of contact not seeing each other anymore. If they were still in touch, they would only be writing letters to each other. Also if they kept in touch and/or if Tennessee still saw Herbie, he would have been on the third film instead of Wheely Applegate. (I thought the sequels were good films and I'm sure it felt like Jim was abandoning Herbie which he wasn't where Jim was just leaving Herbie in the company of friends where on "Herbie Rides Again", Tennessee must have asked Jim to leave Herbie in the care of his aunt Mrs. Steinmetz and maybe after she passed away Jim picked her up and starred on another race in "Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo" and perhaps on "Herbie Goes Bananas", Jim was a retired racer and he was giving Herbie to his nephew which was Pete Stancheck).
@@12classics39 Yes, while Jim and Tennessee were best friends, they might have fallen out of contact with each other because for one thing, on "Herbie Rides Again", Tennessee's aunt Mrs. Steinmetz said how her home used to be Tennessee's home and that he moved out to a new country closer to his guru where he might have told Jim if he could leave Herbie with his senior citizen aunt. Plus, if Jim and Tennessee kept in touch, Tennessee would have been on "Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo" instead of Wheely Applegate.
Mr. Wu buys Thorndyke's showroom as part of the wager. Because Mr. Wu and Thorndyke bet against each other on whether Herbie wins the El Dorado, Thorndyke loses and he and Havershaw are relegated to lowly mechanics.
Mr Wu won the showroom off of Peter Thorndyke. He didn’t buy it because Mr Wu won the bet. Peter Thorndyke had no choice, but to sign the show room over to Mr Wu because he lost at The El Dorado race.
just discovered a blooper. Pay attention to Herbie's driver's side door, you can tell the green screen is being reflected. as you can see the items going through the door
when the interior shot showing herbie driving himself, look at the driver's side door, you can see the road going through it (just below where the window would be
This was a common mistake in the first two Herbie movies in particular. I can't remember what the actual technique is called but it's essentially filming two separate shots and pasting one film over the other (kinda like green screen, but less digital) and obviously, it often resulted in the interior being transparent in some shots. It wouldn't have been that noticeable back then because the screens were extremely grainy, but now with higher resolutions, it's blatantly obvious, and to my knowledge, it still hasn't been fixed in any of the HD versions.
Ironic. Mr Thorndyke invented the concept of small print on the bottom of auto sale contracts And guess how he loses everything? But not riding the small print on the wager. ~N.W
Herbie: Well, good for being my first movie, I hope that in the next one they won't let me play the part of retired from racing .... How ?! Will I have to do that ?! And what will they do then? An evil twin of mine who kills me and then gets Jim back to rebuild me ?? And after? A movie with Lindsay Lohan?!
I think the actors from the original Love Bug, that are alive are Mitchelle Lee, David Tomlison, Ol 53, Herbie, I haven*t heard anything about David Tomlinson, he was in a lot of Disney movies, good actor.
This is exactly why I refuse to accept any of the movie’s sequels. It’s Disney. Of course Jim and Carole lived happily ever after; there was no tragedy or divorce. Herbie is “The Love Bug” BECAUSE he knew they were meant to be, and brought them together.
I don't satified for thornkyde punishment it's to light after finishing the race jim should have punch thornkydes in the face because he cheated, lied and wants to destroyed Herbie
Thornkyde lost is shop and likely his bank accounts were frozen so he had to work off his debts. So Thornkyde will be working until he falls down dead!
Thorndyke made a bet with Mr. Wu when the El Dorado started. As a result of losing the bet, Mr. Wu bought the dealership and relegated Thorndyke and Havershaw to lowly mechanics.
Fast forward 8 years later to Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo... What happened to Carrol? Did Jim and her divorce? Or is it a case of what happens in Monte Carlo stays in Monte Carlo?
The sequels didn’t care about true continuity. Look at how that same movie wants us to pretend we know who the heck “Wheely Applegate” is. This movie will always be its own thing in my heart. Zero sequels needed.
