The car itself was designed by George Barris using a Lincoln continental mk 3 ...The evil, black car in the film was a highly customized 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III designed by famed Hollywood car customizer George Barris. There were four cars built for the film in six weeks. Three were used as stunt mules, the fourth for closeups. The stunt mules were destroyed during production, while the fourth is now in a private collection. The car's bodywork was painted in steel, pearl and charcoal coloring. The windows were laminated in two different shades, smoked on the inside and amber on the outside, so one could see out of it but not into it. In order to give "the car" a "sinister" look as requested by director Elliot Silverstein, Barris made the car's roof three inches lower than usual and altered its side fenders that same length again both higher and longer. According to Silverstein, the distinctive sound the horn of The Car makes spells out the letter X in Morse code.
I saw this car in the late 80s, can't remember exactly, in El Cajon, CA. Museum. Looked the car over real good, even peeked under at the chassis. As I was walking away, it fired up. Scared the bleep out of me. Guy at the museum had a remote!
I remember this scene as a kid, watching this in the 70s when the car was looking into the graveyard it was looking at a big cross, but they don't show it now
Haven't seen the full thing, but this already seems like a better concept for a film about cars than what Pixar did. I mean, I love Cars 1 (mainly it's script), but this idea feels like it could be conceptually a more clever idea.
@a user that eats chips sideways I did also, I think the sweet thing remark really pissed it off more than her throwing the stick at it, you could see the angry look it displayed when it looked at her.
What was not shown was when the car hit the gate it made the ground shake but my most favorite scene was that guy playing the French horn hitch hiking insulted the car got it pissed off and it backed up over him and drove forward just to make sure lol 😆 or how about in the beginning when the first two bicyclists got nailed and tumbled down the mountain but I will tell yall I want that car I love Lincolnshire mark 3s
@@metromadness2016 If I remember correctly, the movie establishes that 'The Car' can't enter cemeteries, so she's taunting it from safe ground, so to speak.
well im not sure because im not sure if this is the same movie because i remember having a conversation with someone years ago and he said there was a movie about a killer car which had tinted windows so you couldnt see anyone in it but he said you could tell someone was driving it because a hand popped out of the car to grab someone not sure if this is that same movie
@@sexydudeuk2172 i think you're referring to that other haunted car movie with a yellow '71 dodge charger that had a modified front end, I don't remember the name of the movie
My uncle actually has a ‘71 Lincoln Continental Mark III in black. Every time I walk by it I feel like the damn thing will ram into me one day 😂 I absolutely loved the movie!
@@audreyfoster2404 To be honest I'm still surprised they killed off the female lead! She was really likeable, it was quite an unusual twist killing her off.
Robert Dee's, the car was also an inspiration for KITT's evil twin KARR, as a matter of fact, if you see the ending of S1 of Knight Rider's episode of Trust Doesn't Rust, instead of KARR goes off the cliff, The Car itself goes off the cliff.
I love the design of the car. The shining black paint-job, the thin, low-down windows, the thick doors with no handles, the odd design of the headlights and the alien-like sound of its engine all give it this otherworldly feel to it, like it's something inhuman poorly pretending to be human. Helps it fall right into the uncanny valley
Same man. Always watched the movie for the vehicle itself. It's a Lincoln continental mark iii town car suped up by Barris Kustoms (same people who did the OG Batmobile) The main guy said "The Car" was actually one of his least favorite designs that he's done. Always imagined the interior being like early 1910s old and just covered in dust/sand, couch like seats.
@@wickeywaanzla3015 and the munsters cars too, and the family truckster. George Barris was an artist who could make a car perfect for a movie or show’s general feel.
@@titanx8167 well when it came out not many liked this movie but as time went by it started to grow now its a cult following for me I am a car guy and a big fan of George Barris and the vehicles he designed for movies for me was the design he fid on the mark3 Lincoln
I remember at one point there was a report thay came into the sheriff's office that someone had heard a car with what sounded like "open pipes". I found it cool that people were hearing it, even if they didn't see it. (Generally seeing it meant it could see you, which was not a good thing for your health)
I like how the car and her are mirrored in a way, she taunts the driver for only feeling powerful behind the wheel, inside the car, while at the same time she's bold and brash because she knows she's safe behind the boundary of the cemetery and won't step foot outside.
Man the sound of that damn engine is serious, I remembered watching this movie as a kid with my mom and I never appreciated the sound, but as a 51 ur old.....I love it.
Thats totally 70's ... No mobile phones mobile Internet mobile hires video record GPS real time streaming social media and ... How can I say... No Veritasium boring scientific explanation of everything? No AI? There was still no hi-tech hubris? There was still some mysticism? Women and children still were the victims and men were the heroic armed rescue? Yes. It is the past and the 70s.
Watched "The Car" and "Jaws" together when I was 8yrs old. I went to Sunday school and then church for years after LoL. Also stayed away from the ocean. 🇦🇺🤠👍
I saw a story about a week ago, a guy showed up at a car show with either the original Car or a perfect reproduction. The condition was so good id tend to believe it to be the latter, but the article didn't say. Legend had it that the Car was really destroyed in the making of the film.
Wow that's a blast from the past. I was a kid when I first saw that. Scary movie. I couldn't walk an alley way for a couple of months after seeing that movie.
Between The Car, The Duel, and Maximum Overdrive and Phantasm (Tall Mans Car).. You'd think in the age of self driving cars, we'd learn our lessons from these old movies?!! 😆
I remember watching this movie on late night TV.. remember back in the day of a handful of local channels received by a TV with antennas sticking out of it..
This scene is so good but it was much longer in the movies. Lauren got the kids involved and they all started teasing the car and making chicken noises thats why he freaked out and got so mad he started doing donuts. They were trying to buy Margie more time to get help. They have never released that full cemetery scene on home video. GREAT MOVIE!
@ The Last Late Show the car didn't really look like it wanted to hurt Margie but it really wanted to get Lauren the way it sped back around where she was.
@@nytewrtr Thats because Lauren was the one who cursed him. Remember the hitchiker. "He ran him over 4 times" - Amos The Devil doesn't like the disrespect being cursed.
I don't know how many times I've watched this movie but I just can't seem to remember what happens in it. Would like to watch it again and see if I remember it. Pretty scary looking for a car. Reminds me of the truck in Maximum Overdrive. Probably the same demon. Lol
I've seen this movie a dozen times but only now noticed that when Margie arrives at the squad car, in the distance you can see that the sheriff's deputy that was csught in the horse stampede surived and actually starting to get up.
One of my favorite movies from the 70s. The ending when the Car 🔥 burns back to Hell was probably one of the Best Non CGI special effects I seen for that year. I will never forget that ending. They made a remake a couple years ago but I haven't seen that one. From the reviews I seen its a different plotline and no better than this original. I saw a diecast footlong but the store was asking $100.00 and had to let it go. I have the one from Back to the Future and wanted to display them together. Maybe next time.🙄😉
The Car was doing doughnuts out of frustration. That the woman didn't understand that. It itself is evil incarnate, as well. As it cannot speak to tell her that. Although Christine did use her radio!
It's called a donut drift is where you keep the car at a angel while going straight or better yet watch a sprint car or midget car race at a dirt track that's drifting nit doing a burn out in the dirt
