Lyrics:
Come and talk of all the things we did today
Here and laugh about our funny little ways
While we have a few minutes to breathe
And I know that it's time you must leave
But darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to
And now, a quarter of my life is almost passed
I think I've come to see myself at last
And I see that the time spent confused
Was the time that I spent without you
And I feel myself in gloom
So darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to
[Instrumental Bridge]
So darling...
My darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to
Go and beat your crazy head against the sky
Try and see beyond the houses and your eyes
It's OK to shoot the moon
Darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to

It it is terribly heartening to read how so very many of you comport with what this song means to me as well. I'm 78 now. While in 1973 the song had already been out for a while and always loved by me...seen 'em live in '67... it took on its Monumental and what will be eternal berth in the most special place of my heart on May 30th 1973 when I was in Los Angeles for what was 5 months pursuing a career in acting and waiting on tables in Westwood Village.... and my uncle called me to tell me that my mom was in dire straights and that I should come home to Buffalo New York right away. I did so of course and found that she had already passed ..no one wanting me to get that news all alone in L.A and Dad..brothers being too distraught to even speak., her having had open heart surgery and not making it - my not having been privy to that because of her not wanting me to worry while I pursued my crazy dream..and that she would be all good from then on-.... This song....either I'd heard it somewhere just before bolting for the airport or on the way or maybe just came into my head via her spirit ...but it played in my head the whole way and to the house where the whole extended family sat weeping. My eyes flood with tears and chest quakes as I write yas heartiest here now ..."I Miss You Ma"

It doesn't get any easier, does it? That spirit you should know that it is yours and if you did not recall your parents they would not live in spirit, they would not live in your spirit. Do not forget that because you are Loved. It was good to read what you have written, that we all might learn from the pain and from the suffering but most certainly you must know you were loved and are loved.

"for the great relief of having you to talk to" is one of my favorite lyrics. I think John Sebastian must have had an old soul at a young age. Not your typical "you're so hot, baby" love songs. It's about how much he values HER, her company, her empathy, her thoughts.

A song a good song don't make you the boss or the king or queen of music it's the people who are the simplest best and at that moment touch you, that's what separates entainers from performer's. In 2001, my daughter was getting married to a wonderful young man that was going to whisk her off to start a new life 2,000 miles away, and as joyful as I was for the both of them, it was truly breaking my heart wide open. They were both too young for this beautiful song to really mean anything to them, but at their reception, I , with a few musician friends backing me up, sang this song to my daughter, and her new husband, with just a few lyrical changes that made it personal to us all. To this day, neither I, nor my extended family could believe that I could make it through the entire song without completely breaking down sobbing. Because all these years later, just hearing the original version turns me to a sobbing wreck. There was a video recorded that night, and now that I moved to be closer to them “and my grandkids”, we have watched it together. I will always thank God for John Sebastian writing such a beautiful, timeless, and moving song for ALL AGES!!! Thank you, from the bottom of my simple heart, Mr. Sebastian!

When I was a 19 year old soon to be mothe, r my husband I and I went to the movie with Loving Spoofull songs. As we came out of the theatre it was a beautiful summer evening still very light. I felt so perfectly happy in that moment with my husband. Life was lovely and a new baby coming. All these years have now passed and in my old age I still find this song so beautiful and evocative of how lovely life can be. Thank you for sharing your nice story and moving to be close to people. No one ever did that for me.

This is on the same level of John Lennon's 'Hide Your Love Away'....a truly heartfelt paean of a young man to a girl he cherishes so deeply and so wants to have in his arms again. This is the classic song of the Loving Spoonful; and John Sebastian....a masterpiece esp. that backing orchestra of strings and brass but most of all the 'strings'....always always the strings!

In the early 1960s I used to work for my grandfather every Christmas, Easter, and summer vacations at his slaughterhouse. Bu the time I was 16 (1967) I was able to buy my own car, or actually a yellow 1962 Ford pickup truck! I was living at Newport Beach, Ca. Good God that was a good time. A couple of my buddies and I made a cheap camper out of 2 sheets of 4X8 plywood and a piece of canvas for a back cover. One of these guys gave me a cowboy. Hanging out at the Newport pier some friends began to call me cowboy. Gas was dirt cheap and auto insurance was not required. We were out for fun and found it in abundance! It is the love of two souls sharing their timeless journey in a connection of wonder. I loved my first true friend like this from the moment we met until she died, too soon, in her 60's. I loved my mother and father until they passed. My husband 'til his passing. My children, my remaining friends, and my Lord Jesus. I raised my kids and now, my grandkids to listen to,and appreciate the best music from the 40s,50s,… on up to the 80s. So they could really know that timeless songs like “Darlin’ be home soon” are available to hear, enjoy, love, and even weep to. That is what real music does, throughout all time.( what a pity if all they listen to is W.A.P.)

@John Connolly the card-carrying communists conquered America. Not with bullets, but with a flood of propaganda so hateful, we're divided by class, race, education and every other way. Obama literally GAVE us Trump. And he's showing us we MUST NOT be divided. But united against all the evil now. #saveourchildren

What happened? Greed Greed Greed. Consume more if you want happiness. What gives me joy? Knowing that 50 years later, I have not sold out have maintained my ideals and though not as frequent I still enjoy getting high from time to time. And without a doubt, as I witnessed so many do. I never became my parents.

Listening to this song made me wish life was like how my grandpa said it was. This world sucks now. I never lived in the 60’s but I did live in the 90’s and I really miss those days.

I saw John & the Spoonful in the University of Dayton (Ohio) Fieldhouse in 1967 when I was 17. John sang this beautiful song and many others. The electricity went out about 2/3's of the way through the show and John & the boys converted to acoustic in about ten minutes and the show went on, lit by cigarettes and doobies and reflections off of quarts of Budweiser beer. A great time was had by all.!
