I decided to drop down to as low GSP as possible in online play in Smash Ultimate, with my best character Diddy Kong in competitive play and then climb up. This experience was quite the journey!

I love how, even when he is playing low GSP matches against people that are usually not that big of a threat, ZeRo is still able to give good advice regarding his opponents habits, mistakes made during the match and options they could've went for... Thought I'd do everyone a favor and catalog all the tips, they seem pretty useful to learn that might help lower rated players catch their mistakes, especially for aspiring Diddy Kong Mains, I organized them all by Victories: W1-W2: Don't throw moves out randomly and without purpose. W3: Don't give up! W4: Don't slack on defense! W5: Don't panic mash! Keep yer cool! W6: Remember your spacing for recovery options, when to use them at the right time. W7: Play careful when close to kill percentage. Also W7: Practice with items occasionally, so you are able to use opponent skills like bananas to your advantage. W8: (Specifically advice for Diddy Kong Mains, 10:49-11:12) W9: Don't play Smash with default wifi, play with a hardline for better internet connection so you don't lag. (Also Nintendo fix your net code!) W10-W11: There is good mashing (i.e. W10 for recovery, Mash options that have a High chance of you hitting the opponent like a fast move or move with a lot of range) and bad mashing (i.e. W4 or W11 bad mashing, panic mashing) W12: *for diddy kong mains, Forward Smash is a guaranteed kill, less of a chance for opponent popping out. ;) W13: Always remember to use good options for combos. Also, more Diddy Kong 15:01-15:16 W14-W15: Bait your opponent to make them mess up, Plan Ahead also, (i.e. Diddy Kong for setting up options 15:47-16:06 know your options, know your opponents options... As best you can ahem* There are like a zillion characters in this game, if you know you know, ya know? Like this random bit of knowledge in how Sonic works 16:07-16:34, facts like that you take note of from casually playing the game pay off in the long run, it can save your life! - I'd recommend not sweating about memorizing every single character, just maybe the ones you run into most or ones you got most trouble dealing with, if that's "Literally Everybody" just play more you'll pick it up eventually ) W16: Don't get overwhelmed! (Yes, it's different than giving up - the person was playing alright at the start made a couple mistakes not heeding our previous tips about options and spacing, brain just got fried by too much force) W17: Don't get stuck on using one move over again, just because it's big damage doesn't mean it's best option and is exploitable by your opponent cuz it makes you predictable. :) W18-W19: Wait for opponent to come to you, Wait and see what your opponent will do, then punish. Also W19: Don't get greedy! Also W19: It's a bad idea to go back into the level and do nothing. Always be moving and trying to do something to capitalize on opponents vulnerabilities. W20: More Diddy Kong tips for a particular matchup and again don't spam moves. W21: Learn to play carefully! Pick the area of the stage where you can neutralize the most threat from a character that you have the most trouble with to contain them in a certain gameplan. This can be keeping them on the edge and away from mid, like this match suggests. (Some characters like the mid, others like the edge it really depends) W22: Diddy Mains take notes on how he thinks... That's all for now GGs You're now 2mil GSP

It's more likely to happen for casual players. These players play for fun, not the win and self betterment, and they give up much easier if they're clearly outclassed. I think the challenge of overcoming is pretty fun oftentimes, but I can understand them thinking they're outclassed and not going to put enough time and effort into bettering themselves to the level they'd need to to overcome someone like ZeRo lol

Anyone interested in the psychoanalytical aspect of gaming, I highly suggest Psych of Play and Core-A Gaming. These channels go in depth on topics related to why we give up or make bad decisions while gaming. Core-A is a more practical fighting game related channel, while Psych of Play goes very deep into more personal life-related aspects of gaming. Both are very entertaining and insightful. I highly recommend them. I improved a lot after watching these channels.

I don’t agree with zero here. He’s expecting, maybe a 11 year old kid to try learning this match up from one of the former greatest players of all time. There’s nothing to learn when you’re just starting out and getting completely dominated by a professional. Mostly because you don’t even know where you went wrong. So what is there to learn? Plus that 11 year old probably wanted to play for fun with people around their skill level. Not ZeRo.

Tbf I don't think we should look down on them because of that. Or even come to a conclusion that it is a "mindset". They might be just playing for fun and it is understanrable that they don't want to continue a match that's not fun. I mean come on now. Little timmy vs a pro smasher smurf lol. I'm in elite smash but I also sometimes (though rarely) "give up" against players who I think are boring to play against. I guess I'm a tryhard casual as in I somewhat enjoy tryharding but I mostly play for fun & am not trying to become a god.

i think my favorite thing about this video is that you didn't trash talk the lower gsp players. You pointed out potential mistakes based on "what ifs" and I really appreciated. What a good option would be vs diddy / etc. and took the route of "this person appears to not have been aware of the best route to take advantage of x or y." So much better to hear commentary like this, please keep it up!

The way how I see it is when you notice the skill gap between you and your opponent is too great continuing the match really is just a waste of time. You both know what the outcome of the match will be and a comeback is only really possible if the Gap in skill isn't that far off and you're capable of seeing what you're doing wrong as well as are able to fix it mismatch. If you can't do that repeatedly fighting a battle where there's no chance of an upset just gets boring to watch and isn't fun to play. Just be sure to take your L like a man before you walk away.

That’s the mindset of someone who won’t get far in the first place. If someone is vastly better than I am (doesn’t happen often) I analyze during the match. If you know your going to lose, you have already lost. That’s only true if you assume your going to lose. I always assume no matter who I play that I’m going to win. Even if they are better than me. Because all I have to do is learn, and adapt, and figure out holes in their gameplay. Like me, they are human, and make mistakes. Sometimes it’s just about who can exploit the others mistakes and adapt better. If you go in with a “oh he’s better so I’m gonna lose” mindset, might as well sell the game and switch and go do something else. Everyone has the ability to get better, and winning is only as impossible and you yourself make it. That’s true both literally and figuratively.
@protoman111
@protoman111 2 года назад
The problem is you're only thinking binary. Wins vs Losses. At the end of the day, yeah it's about that, but do you know how much of an impression you're gonna make when you take someone from 3 stocks 1? I played plenty of matches (with friends and online) where I was basically about to be three-stocked then flipped the pancake taking 2 stocks on my one stock (and in some cases winning the game). Not only can you make an impression, you can possibly make your opponent choke as they may potentially get desperate to end the match. NEVER give up until you hear the announcer announce the end of the match.
@megametexe5129
@megametexe5129 2 года назад
What you guys don't seem to understand is the vast chasm in skill that can exist between players. No one's saying that people can't get better and eventually win but within the span of a single match or even a few hours of playing with somebody? For some people closing that Gap just isn't possible in that time. Think of it this way if you're challenged to a competitive match by a well built competitive mixed martial artist when you have very little experience and he isn't holding back. It doesn't matter how many times you fight him that day you're not winning. But of course if you go home and train for a few months learn a few fighting styles and workout your odds of beating him next time will definitely improve. But all that takes time and you can't make up for all of that over the course of a few hours in the ring with him your first time around. That fight is not winnable at your current skill level no matter how much you throw yourself at him that day. The important thing is that you don't give up on trying to improve yourself if you really want to grow. whether it be in competitive fighting or a video game. Train with people just above your skill level so you can grow properly and improve gradually over time. There's nothing wrong with turning down a fight you know you have no chance in winning that's just knowing your own limits. there's a difference between knowing your limitations and flat-out giving up. Not everybody can start playing on the hardest difficulty some people have to start at a lower level before they can attempt the hardest difficulty.

But if you disconnect, lag out, or ragequit, the next time you try to play quickplay the game will be like "Hey you disconnected in you last fight. We don't know if its connection problems, or some other problem, but don't disconnect again or we'll have to suspend you from online play for a while." Something I learned from Alpharad’s second channel: your GSP gains or losses are based on your win/loss ratio. If you played a ton of matches trying to get as low as you can, then you’ve basically nerfed your potential gains. Also, you don’t gain any GSP whatsoever if they disconnect before the match is over. Might explain a few of your null results.

I think the game is programmed in a way that if someone self destructs on pourpose, both players won't gain or lose any gsp to prevent people from sding on pourpose. Also if the opponent is replaced by a computer, you won't gain any gsp 100%

I'm not into watching other players play on Quickplay, but what made your's so entertaining was that I was actually able to learn something everytime. Can't believe that even agaisnt very new players, I'm able to learn something you have to say about them. I'm all for introspective Smash content. You still got it.
@GSEleven
@GSEleven 2 года назад
Yeah, people make content like..."Can I get to Elite from 0 GSP?" Obviously, if you are good enough. I can do that myself with my main if I could get to 0 GSP with them. They vaguely explain things people do and how knowing how to fight against it is important. I have applied airdodging against Sonic homing attack and it has already done more for me than most tips videos could on their own. It made me go back and watch sets of ZeRo to learn more. My skill jumped significantly in only one day.

I would like to see this turn into a "Journey to Elite Smash" kind of series simply because it looks like Nintendo made it LOADS harder to get there now.
@ForeverAbroad
@ForeverAbroad 2 года назад
I think the system is broken. It's SUPER easy for me. I already have almost every character in elite smash. So when I start a new character, it only takes 2-3 wins in a row. And then I'm there. Because my baseline is so high.

@@ForeverAbroad Really??? Wth Nintendo? 🤣
@GawainSSB
@GawainSSB 2 года назад
@@ForeverAbroad Its definitely broken. I got elite during launch on some characters that I haven't played since then and they're still in. Some characters who have similar gsp will lose 4x as much per loss as others, even against the same opponent. Elite is just a bad mode honestly.
@snuggie1849
@snuggie1849 2 года назад
@@jukeboxhero30 overall the threshold for elite is lower but if you have a character you don't play often and you win a few times you can get elite if your average is at least 8 million. If you play a long time and have many matches then you gain far less and lose more to keep you at that average gsp. The system can be cheesed through spamming items and camping 4 player smash so its a broken system. It does show your average skill to an extent if you only play solo quickplay or solo elite no items on. If your wondering how i know all this its because i have 1500 hours in the game and got most characters at about 10.5 gsp.

I genuenly enjoy this! I have very low gsp becouse of my bad conection and just over all not being good in presure and paniking alot. This happens to me in alot of competitive games, but i usualy just forse myself to stay calm and evetualy get use to the presure; which i havent been able to properly do in smash. Seing tips like these, even if on a diffrent character, does kinda help since some of the concepts are the same and work similarly. Please keep this up! I wish there was an unranked battle for casual play. You almost can't expect a 1v1 setting where someone isn't trying too hard. Arenas are good, but I feel it's rough to have good matches when skill levels are constantly overlapping each other.
@AmaneKoruba
@AmaneKoruba 2 года назад
Yeah, ZeRo, in case you ever do this again, you should just pure not count or have a different counter for disconnects as they do not affect your GSP whatsoever. So in reality, to get to 2 mil gsp, it took the wins minus the disconnects since those pretty much didn’t exist

Low GSP peeps give up easy because they KNOW when a high level player purposely lowers their GSP just so they can annihilate them. Its very very very common.
@mike48931
@mike48931 2 года назад
I disagree. A lot of times a player can be very good with their character and still be low GSP because of things like lack of matchup knowledge, inconsistent play, whiffed punishments, SD’s, etc. I have a few low GSP characters that I haven’t played since starting the game and have gotten much better with them so I have embarrassed a few players but my lack of matchup experience with that character has set me back many times. Which is also another point that people start the game off bad and come back to characters when they are better and with the way the GSP system works, they are in the same bracket they were in when they sucked at the game. Having a lot of previous losses also prevents them from climbing at a rate that they otherwise should.
