I would have given it at least 1 in importance since the hyper space Jetray thing comes up fairly often in the community. Still, he was a bit too harsh imo but the episode is still garbage so who cares really. Although, I am very much looking forward to his review of the most random Ben 10 episode, " The Widening Gyre"
Aye. I was sitting here looking at that title thinking “well come on, even if it only gets a 4 something else could be worse- I genuinely did not think a 0/25 was possible.
@@shadowednight1600 I still like them. I don't think every villain in Ben 10 needs to be uber powerful all the time. I like that the Knigths are jobbers sometimes. Their treat isn't in competence, it's in overwhelming numbers. And in the element of surprise, because they are underestimated, so when they do actually do something dangerous the gang's not ready for it. I think the problem is moreso the show overuses them as the go to goons, instead of coming up with different cold open villains.
I thought that Baz-el not recognizing that he ate an important orb to the temple (whatever the place is) really doesn’t feel like something he would do. It felt pretty directionless.
Even as a kid I found Ben and Julie having arguments constantly in this episode didn't really have much sense to me, I just didn't feel anything when I watched it as a kid, everyone felt so mean-spirited and it kinda hurt
@@monkiking778 women always want to fight. Kevin is acting like a girl in this episode. You can have a perfect life, everything arranged to be great like owning a couple of trillions, be world famous, have the biggest rooster on the planet and super tall, and barely even having to work and then at home your girl wants to cause strife so she can cheat with some hobo who doesnt even make 1 buck a month. There is a reason Future Ben doesnt endup with Julie but instead goes with Kai, at least Kai doesnt want to risk her source of fame. Also, the Omnitrix repairs genetic damage so Ben doesnt have to worry about parasites or std's no matter how often he dips down his Tennyson raw.
I feel you.. I didn't understand this show when I was like a kid back then, but later after learning life lessons from Ben 10, I slowly know the truth and it's hurted me too..
I find it just amazing how they built an amazing relationship with Ben and Julie in their first appearance and then somehow begin to subsequently tear it down the more times they show up together.
the worst part is that they occasionally had episodes where they showed them nice together and then episodes like this... like homer's "it's still good, it's still good"
Well initially they go quite right with this. I mean only about... well I think it was Ultimate Alien or maybe late Alien Force when they started to destroy their relationship. Which is a big shame. But yeah after they decide to blow it all up it pretty much became a slippery slope...
Is kinda impressive how the Ship and Baz-El episodes on their own are like a chronicle of how the writers butchered ben and julie's relationship (or how they stopped caring about it)
@@flarestorm9417 yeah, would be interesting if she actually joins the plumbers. or maybe a little lore about her family or what's her life before she met ben
@@ardzzz1010 Back when Alien Force was just starting I thought I had a massive eureka moment some time after seeing Pier Pressure. I read the synopsis for X = Ben + 2 and thought "So that's why Julie is so boring she's secretly an alien princess hiding out on Earth. She'll get a lot better once they make the reveal!" Of course I was disappointed but I remain convinced my version of the episode would have been way better, though to be fair most ideas would have been better than what we got in that episode.
@@ianthibeault404 I liked that theory of yours about julie! although it we all know julie is just a regular human with no alien history, it would've been nice if the writers added some elements about her character. I was hoping for an episode back then were it is centered only around ben and julie with no apperance of gwevin (we kinda did have that in pier pressure, but I want an episode with only ben and julie). it would be the best way to develop their relationship more and ofc, to see mire side of julie. I was also hoping for a julie centered episode back then.
@@HiperPivociarz I mean they are literally just punching bags, imagine if they were still fighting Dnaliens. Besides having such lame villains for you series finale is also a baffling move
@@HiperPivociarz yes but they at least need to be interesting or be able to put up a threat and currently with the way the knights are so easy to defeat and are so boring you can see why
@@monkiking778 No, some goons are fun because they're easy to defeat. The knights still have a cool aesthetic, cool motivation, and it's funny how they're these intimidating Sauron armor army, but then they act like regular dudes, who order pizza and play games.
I know we’re basically all in agreement that the way UA handles the concept of going Ultimate is not great, but I would like to take it a step further and point out that BOTH of the main two side characters’ corresponding “ultimate” counterparts - Gwen’s Anodite form and Kevin’s mutation - have BOTH been treated with significantly more weight and reverence than the gimmick the show is named for.
I figured that Jetray going into hyperspace made sense since he can't really use that power on Earth because if he did he would either crash into something, or fly far away from the Earth since he's going way faster than escape velocity
Arguably, id say jetray can only accelerate fast enough to jump into hyperspace in the vaccum of outer space and it isn't something he'd be able to do normally within earths atmosphere due to the effects of air pressure and drag.
Wow. I knew this episode wasn't getting high ratings, but WOW. Admittedly, I liked the scenes with Jimmy and Brainstorm. The hyperspace scene was a missed opportunity for us to see Ultimate Jetray though.
0:57 " But usually her presence now means her and Ben are gonna fight. " Damn. imagine being a kid with parents that never get along and watching this series. That's just not right.
I just don't understand why Ultimate Alien put Ben and Julie at odds with each other and ruin the chances of what could've been a sweet romance between the two. I always hate it when writers forcefully shoehorn-in pointless drama into romantic relationships, and this is a perfect example of that. Kevin and Gwen were also rather insufferable in this episode. The way they automatically picked Julie's side and constantly put the blame on Ben, not even wanting to listen to what he also goes through is just infuriating to watch. It kind of reminds me of when a man is getting beaten in public by a woman people assume it's because he deserves it. Also, Kevin has some nerve calling Ben a "world famous jerk", when just a few episodes ago he was hurting innocent people and wanted to drain Gwen of her powers.
Okay to be completely fair to Kevin, he wasn’t in his right mind, Kevin wasn’t so much of a jerk as he was more just insane, Kevin wasn’t uncaring, like Ben seems to be in this episode
NOW YOU KNOW What us amazing spider-man readers have to dealt regarding Peter parker's and mary jane's romance in comic book form! (Especially one more day..... urgh)
Well I don't have watched the complete episodes in a while, but for what I remember, didn't Ben choose to see a Movie over a Julie's important tenis match she want him to be there, and also was ready to cheat / change Julie for Eunice a episode ago? Kevin and Gwen saw all that so I can totally belive they would want to choose Julie's side.
2 questions 1. What would happen if Ben turned into humongousaur and sucker punched Kevin after he called Ben a jerk ? 2. Do you think this episode is better or worse than Duped ?
Ladies, gentlemen and everyone else for the first time in forever. We have the first ben 10 episode to achieve all 0s in every category. CONGRATULATIONS EYE OF THE BEHOLDER.
this is one of those episodes that make me glad you went with short reviews for the unimportant episodes. I wouldn't want you to waste your time on an episode you think is pointless, its better to focus on the episodes you like and think are important than... this.
a flaw of Gwen's was that she meddles in other peoples lives a lot. She says she's just being helpful , but it comes off as a controlling, know it all attitude.
I remember really hating this episode. It had a bare bones plot and everyone was acting like jerks. It really makes you question why Ben and Julie are together, and come time in Omniverse when they breakup it's not really surprising. It's like the writers didn't know what to do with their relationship.
Rewrite: Have Ben go with Julie in RB3 to get Ship while Gwen and Kevin deal with the knights.(You guys are cops you can't just walk away in the middle of a fight!) On they way there have them talk about their issues/why they broke up. They find Ship then rescue Baz-L like in cannon. It reminds them of their first date. Then on the way back they promise to do better and get back together(Maybe have them get into Kevin's stash of fleen cakes).
I really wish Ben and Julie had a heart to heart and just pour out their feelings cause it really feels like everytime Julie shows up Ben and her have to get into a fight or have relationship drama. Even as a kid I sided with Ben cause honestly he got it hard this episode I know he's a jerk but this is after THE ULTIMATE KEVIN ARC so it's crazy how Gwen and Kevin are ready to dunk on Ben when you would thought they have a little more respect for him. So I'm gonna assume it's probably pent up aggression. Ben being a jerk is honestly standard at this point. I do like we have a chance to have a deep dive into Ben's mind which is rare but I do like to know what goes through his head . Julie, Gwen, and Kevin are out of character but hey at least we got Baz-l everyone's favorite character. I actually like Baz-l. But yeah this episode reminded me that yeah this is probably why they broke Ben and julie up cause wow this episode painful to sit through.
Unironically, the only part of this episode that really got my interest was when Kevin was eating that blue snack, no joke, I always wondered how do those things taste and what’s their texture like
Me during the AF breakdowns: I thought characterization and visuals couldn’t get lower than 2 Me during the UA breakdowns: I thought visuals and entertainment couldn’t get lower than 1
This was a sick tear down honestly, pretty ruthless to the point where it was hilarious. Like just the dead inside voice made it 10x more vicious. The first 0 too. My guy has some serious history with this episode lol. I mean it is pretty abysmal, I remember hating it as a kid as well. The Julie stuff was just always so unpleasant.
@@ardzzz1010 maybe in past episodes but if we're talking about solely this episode Ben really did nothing wrong only thing he did that was bad really was not going to help out with Ship, but he did go to help so even then bens not really at fault here everyone else is being pretty unreasonable
I hated Julie in this chapter, literally the series wants to show that she is the victim and Ben the problem but the opposite happened to me, I even sided with Ben more (even though most of the series is desperate until the breaking up over a video game doesn't seem so bad to me), but don't worry, she's going to make the biggest mistake later: Confusing Vilgax with Dagon causes a cult to now want to kill his ""boyfriend"" (I imagine Ben looking angry at what happened off-screen)
naaahhhh... she wasn't the wrong one in this ep, maybe gwen bc i feel like she overreacted instead of julie who accept ben's refuse pretty well before she literally just turned away and THEN gwen came out of nowhere
@@jainaraalves516 nah Julie was acting hella unreasonable, I mean she practically broke up with Ben just because he couldn't spend enough time with her which as he said really isn't his fault, does ben sometimes have a chance to spend time but messes it up? Yes he does, but in this episode Ben was literally mid fight and Julie wanted to talk about their relationship she doesn't even care about the fact that if he doesn't fight people could die, pretty sure she would get mad even if everytime ben wasnt able to spend time with her was because he was fighting crime which is very unreasonable
That just reminds me of when I went to middle school and a girl in my class was in the same position every school photo and when I pointed that out someone actually laughed
Ngl. Julie was annoying AF in this episode. "Ship, you wanted to save your friend's life, then I think you should go with him" And Ben dared not to talk to her in the middle of a fight. How could he do a thing so terrible? 😐 For me, the best Ben's love interest was Ester.
I feel like ben and Julie's relation ship was ruined by them righting julie to seem more selfish then she was originally. Also I feel like baz l wasn't treated very well, but I know that sh!t dont matter
Honestly, the thing about the episode that bugged me most (besides the interactions between Ben and Julie) was the whole slippery surface of the planet bit, as it literally had no point besides making Ben trip.
I never realized it at the time, but Baz-El is the only Galvanic Mechamorph to not have a filter over his voice. Every other Galvanic Mechamorph has a filter to make their voice sound more computerized, but his voice is just a straight-up British accent. I don't hate it, but it's a weird omission now that I think about it. Maybe they didn't intend for any Mechamorph but Upgrade to have that filter at the time.
This is one of those episodes of UAF that make me wonder if the writers even remembered Classic, like how does Baz-l get a stomach ache? He's a blob of nanites!
@@Andrew-Bastin And the show would be good lol. Felt like 90% of the time they were purposely retconning and ruining stuff from classic out of spite or something, like there's no way that level of inconsistency and incompetence is an accident. They straight up must have hated the first show.
@@Andrew-Bastin right. Retcons in Omniverse are the writers purposely ignoring stuff UAF established and bringing OG stuff back, but the retcons in UAF feels like the writers didn't even care about the classic enough to maintain consistency. That's why I'm less mad with what OV changed (even though I don't like it either).
@@LuisGustavoSO i don't know, the rooters retcons feel like over correction..... to the point i dislike omniverse more even though for some reason in the section of the fandom i am in they call omniverse underrrated jewel and i feel so lonely
@@ianr.navahuber2195 the rooters retcon could’ve been handled better but considering the mess Kevin’s backstory already was, I don’t blame the OV writers for trying to fix it and for the most part it works.
Wow, I didn’t expect this episode to get a whole zero but I do agree I do think that this episode is abysmal. It feels like that everyone is just being a jerk to Ben, which he did screw up with Julie, but everyone just felt like a jerk and Kevin saying that Ben just doesn’t care did he not hear young Ben explaining why he acts like this in the forge of creation?
Ben in Absolute Power: “When I thought you were dead, I had to do a lot of growing up. For a while, but then I let my fame go to my head. I've been as big a jerk these past few months as I ever was. Ben in Eye of the Beholder: “I’m A wOrLd FaMoUs HeRo”
When the 'Simple' review came out I was wondering if any episode would be lower - and I thought if there was going to be one, it would be this one. Guess I was right lol
@@skibot9974 definitely understandable, I'd probably pick that as the worst omniverse episode Though 'the most dangerous game show' , 'fight at the museum' and 'rules of engagement ' are all pretty close imo
@@Darkspyre2 what I find most intersting about “The Most Dangerous Gameshow” is it was written by Yuri Lowenthal who plays Ben. And his wife is Tara Platt the voice of Ester. I wonder how she reacted when she first read her husband’s script
It feels like this episode was made to try and close remaining story beats, if I'm wording that correctly, like Ben's relationship with Julie, Julie's relationship with Ship, Gwen and Kevin's resentment towards Ben for being irresponsible, Baz-El as a character and so on, but it doesn't work and just feels forced. On an unrelated note, this was the episode that involved the cyclops aliens, or whatever they were called? I think back to this every so often and think that it would've been cool, if Ben had gotten one of these beings as a transformation. In fact, I thought that was what the episode was building up to but, alas, it wasn't. Which is a shame as it would've given the episode at least a purpose if nothing else.
The only thing I remember from this episode is Jetray going hyper speed and the temple. I swears when I watched it I felt like Ben and the gang were the bad guys because they literally just destroyed a scared temple with no remorse. I felt bad for the Cyclops.
I feel if the team wanted to build towards a plot line where ben and Julie break up, they should have spent more time also showing the positives of their relationship. And maybe make their arguments be more over things related to lifestyle than personality. Like have her be upset that ben is rarely around because he is always working a case or something similar. And also like give ben reasons to be upset with her as well. There is so much the writers could have done with the idea that they didn't, and then the new omniverse turns them eventually breaking up into another lol random throwaway gag
I honestly don't care for how ben and Juile breakds up as long Juile is far away from him. But they did that ester break up dirty af with the destiny bs with a show with alternate realties and multiverses and alternate timelines.
I think for importance it should get at least a 1, considering I think this is the episode Ben first used Jetray to hyperspeed fly through space. Other than that it’s got nothing going for it
@@t.i.5528 It's even more painful to watch because Ben already knows that. In Alien Force seasons 1 and 2 Ben already became the hero he was meant to be. At least in Classic Ben was still learning how to be a hero, and he was only 10. What's UA Ben's excuse?
Another problem I have is why are Ben and Julie on bad terms again from duped when we see in hero time and absolute power part 2 that there still a couple.
It was at this point that I noticed there were a lot more characters and creatures in the Ben 10 franchise that seem to wear black undies/loincloths. But I often questioned myself why they did this all the same. Probably a stylistic trope in the superhero/sci-fi genre. Correct me if I am wrong. I sometimes draw creatures in that single article of clothing sometimes, inspired, of course, by the design choices they made throughout AF, UA and Omniverse, depending on the circumstances, like ritualistic and traditional purposes, or if it fits the design of said character.
It's kind of just a thing with UAF honestly. They design things in a basic kind of way and so it all ends up looking really similar, like how they make everything red and silver. So if your seeing a lot of black undies on dudes then that's probably why. Hell, even if you look at the AF Omnitrix alien designs you can see a lot of recurring design elements with them that make them look too similar. Most of them have that gritting teeth mouth, they have similar chest things (look at Spidermonkey, Big Chill, and Humongousaur's torsos) etc. UAF just had really simplified, repetitive looking designs a lot of the time, and as a result the background aliens ended up going from grotesque interesting Tom Perkins designs from the original show, to different colored human-shape guys with pointy ears and undies or something in UAF.
@@Squishito Very true. I do see some recurring elements like these and I agree with you. Definitely a stylistic choice they had at the time. Sometimes I do see some simplified character designs as well, which does make the style and animation slightly more economical and is my favourite Ben 10 style, but it can sometimes make designs on certain creatures look bland and sometimes forgettable. Plus I find some Omni/Ultimatrix aliens a bit bland as well like Jury Rigg, who doesn’t look like an alien at all, plus Eatle, I found his Omniverse design more interesting than his UA design. Looked more like a Japanese robot to me.
Jetray brainstorm and ultimate swampfire have really made the episode shine and with Ben and Julie’s relationship it’s complicated yes, I consider this as normal teen drama for them
To be fair, Yuri Lowenthal did voice Sasuke Uchiha, another awesome character who, like 16-year old Ben, has very little relationship skills with his best friend, his soon-to-be wife and even his own daughter!
I really wish that ben had a moment with Julie like he had with azimuth when he says there is no point in the argument because it doesn’t help anyone. Also for him to break up with Julie
How come many fans were unhappy about Jetray going in the hyper space ? Also I agree sitting through this episode made me uncomfortable. Did the writers even forget the scene where Gwen told Ben he had good manners in Peer Pressure ?
@@monochronous1661 if was ultimate Jetray to use that ability i would buy it, and about the spaceship usually Ben just goes with the gang to space so...eh
Jetray having hyperspeed make no sens at all. I would go as far to say that the hyperspeed flight fit astrodactyl better since he have jetpack (which is part of his biology) for propulsion
I'm sure you pointed this out Kuro in this breakdown, but yeah it's weird to see the prototype omnitrix when Ben transforms into Jetray and Brainstorm. Considering that it got destroyed in the Alien Force Season 3 finale which in my opinion the season 3 of Alien Force could've been written better if the writers didn't screw it up
@Dawid Stawowski That’s kind of the point though? In the scene Ben literally says to Kevin “So you’re an expert on feelings?” To which he responds “No, but I’m an expert on jerks” Also, while Kevin does occasionally still stumble after his initial turn to the light (Ultimate Kevin arc excluded for obvious reasons) in terms of maintaining a healthy romantic relationship he’s got Ben beat by a mile
If you compare Julie and Eunice from this episode and the previous episode respectively you can understand which character has better chemistry with Ben
Yeahhh….the only reason I remember this episode is because CN made a joke of Ben slipping on the rocks by saying he was stepping on a banana peel 🍌. Was that just me or was that an actual commercial lol 😂.
