After a five season run on I Love Lucy, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance return to the small screen in The Lucy Show. This time they play a pair of widows, Lucy Carmichael and Vivian Bagley, living together as best friends with their children Chris snd Jerry Carmichael and Jerry Bagley in Danfield, N.Y. In the first Lucy lived on a trust fund left behind by her late husband, watched over by a tightfisted banker, Mr. Barnsdahl (Charles Lane). The second season finds a cast change with Mr. Theodore J. Mooney taking over as the hotheaded banker. Vivian Vance quit the series after season three causing yet another big format change. Season four finds Lucy's daughter headed off to college and son Jerry shipped off to a military academy, leaving Lucy alone on the show. So, Lucy heads off to a Los Angeles apartment, and for reasons unknown, Mr. Mooney transfers to a bank there also, to remain as her comedic foil. This season also saw a number of guests appearing weekly to play off of. Lucy would also work for Mr. Mooney at the bank during this season. May Jane Croft was also brought in as Lucy's best friend this season. Lucille Ball, born, Lucille Désirée Ball, August 6, 1911, passed away, April 26, 1989 (age 77)

I had to laugh when the script describes Ruta Lee as a movie star and the girl next door . She's better described as TV guest star and occasionally movie actress that provided dramatic eye candy . Ms. Ball and Ms. Lee seem to have definite chemistry together . Too bad they only made two of these Lucy shows together .

This was the funniest episode of this series. Rita Lee couldn't keep herself together, and how Milton was able to was amazing. Everyone looked like they were about to crack up.

Kudos to all, including the production staff for not insisting on re-shooting that finale. Letting everyone laugh at what, in real life, would cause all involved to laugh, was a great choice (unusual for this time frame, and pre-dating Burnett's show, which had more latitude in that regard, as it was a sketch show, not a sitcom)! And, with Berle's capper joke ("salad's on me"), everyone finally gets a chance to no longer bother trying to hold it all in! Brilliant!

usually like the movie star episodes. But this one was amazing. Everyone at the top of their game. and the writing ! oh the writing . "I got him a new golf bag! "Oh that's nice .. A man gets tired of going around with the same old bag.... "May I toss the salad ? ~~PLOP~~ Ruta Lee was adorable, she kept breaking the wall in the salad scene but it didn't matter -- Mrs Berle was a total pro.

At 4:00 the lining of Miss Ball's coat matches her dress, Mr Mooney is paying too much !. I like how she mimics Berle's famous characters shortly after this, Kudos to the prop person who created The salad ,

joe LoL back then, women would often have their clothes and lining of their coats match and even head bands to match their outfits. When women took pride in their appearance. 👍
@LaDivinaLover
@LaDivinaLover 4 года назад
Saxon C what world do you live in? Most women still “take pride in their appearance”. The difference is they dress for themselves and not for other people. It also costs an insane amount of money to do superfluous things like match your coat lining to a dress and accessories now. You can thank fast fashion for that. Having a simple pair of trousers hemmed costs $35 minimum. And seeing as the minimum wage hasn’t been a living wage for decades exactly how are the majority of people supposed to afford to do these silly things? I’ve noticed people like you just like to bitch about women. They wear makeup and they’re trashy and it disgusts you. They wear comfortable simple clothes and they are slovenly and aren’t good enough for you. They wear fashionable clothes and they are capricious and silly or “don’t have their priorities in order”. Why don’t you focus on your shortcomings? You seem like the type to have many.

@@LaDivinaLover Wtf is your problem ? Yes back in 50's and 60's, women dressed respectively and that's how it was done back then. I grew up in the 60's and no way would you be aloud to leave the house wearing what girls wear today ! Times haven't changed that much, when you see a girl wearing sleezy clothes or tight exposing clothes, she's still gonna be labeled as a slut and guys know it to ! So it's not surprising that you don't understand fashion, cuz what people wear, will always speak volume about your character ! While fashion will always change, The stigma attached to what you wear will never change ! Clearly you are a Dumb Fuck, that does not know what she is talking about !

@@hudsony777 That's why I always thought Lucy excitedly bleating out that line was funny. Ruta Lee made a living as an actress, but she was never a movie star. Lucy did get some big name guest stars on her show (obviously Milton Berle, here; later on, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton) but Ruta Lee was NOT one of them.

The funny thing was about eight episodes after this, Ruta Lee would appear on the show again as a normal character who Lucy thought was after her job. It was similar to Claude Akins, THE ACTOR, on the I Love Lucy episode, then he too shows up on The Lucy Show as a regular policeman. Then I watch this and notice Ruta's hair. It's bigger than her body is. But also while Ruta was cracking up and she was supposed to be an actress, Ruth Berle wasn't an actress her, portraying herself, so that's why laughed, but both Berle and Lucy herself stayed in character. By this time, Lucy wouldn't have known how to crack up and lose her composure.

The character of Vivian Bagley was not a widow. She was a divorcée.
@ericandy88
@ericandy88 4 года назад
Which was daring for the time period. Widows & widowers were allowed, but it seemed divorce was hardly acknowledged in sitcoms at the time (gotta have a happy ending after a misunderstanding, after all). The author of the book on which The Lucy Show was based had been a divorcee, but Lucy herself felt that would confuse/disappoint viewers who might have thought she & Ricky Ricardo had gotten divorced (though the public was well aware she & Desi were no longer together). Obviously, such logic is rather odd today, but I guess audiences followed their favorite stars from show to show & wanted to believe Lucy (or the "Lucy" character) was an honorable woman.

Lucy Carmichael was a widow; Vivian Bagley was a divorcee. Gary Morton would say in interviews that he had never seen "I Love Lucy" because he was busy working. Gosh, he didn't know Lucille Ball was television's biggest star. But most nightclubs were closed Monday nights... when "I Love Lucy" was broadcast.
