I'm super lucky to have access to as much camera gear as I do, so I thought today I'd talk to you about the Lumix equipment I actually find myself using daily.
It's very easy to get wrapped up in the idea of a new lens or camera body, but realistically it has to serve your use case - otherwise it'll just end up sitting on your shelf collecting dust.
Here's a rundown of the main camera's and lenses that I genuinely use every single day.
The Lumix S5IIX and S5II still remain to be the only camera bodies I use. I use a mix of the Panasonic Lumix 18mm F1.8, 24mm F1.8, 50mm F1.8 and 85mm F1.8 - and now with the introduction of the new Lumix 100mm F2.8 Macro, I have been using that lens very regularly too!
Thanks for watching, and I hope you get some value from this video!

What Lumix gear are YOU using? AND, are you planning to keep your kit the same this year, or is there anything else that has caught your eye? 👀

I am still on my S5 and still love it. I don't make anything from photos so upgrading does not make sense to me. I am just getting new glass instead. Maybe in the next couple of years, I can upgrade.

My S5 with the Sigma 14-24 F2.8 is my daily work horse for Real Estate and my S5II is setup for video work. For that, the 18mm F1.8 and 50mm F1.8 are regularly used! For event photography, the S-Pro 70-200 F2.8 and the 24-105 are my go-to lenses.

S5 and S5ii, 50mm and Im getting the 24mm also. Please let us know which one you use more 85 /100 mm so I can make decision after I get the 24 mm. Do you shoot broll always 50/60 fps?

Nice reminder, Josh, that the kit we have goes a long way. I still have the OG S1 as my main camera, I haven't been doing too much video otherwise I would have upgraded to the S5 II lineup for the AF. Plus the Lumix S 24-105 for travel stuff, paired with the S 50 or 85 1.8 prime. And that's pretty much it. I hope the next gen of Lumix brings 4K 120P without crop, that is the feature I absolutely need for my work, and having that missing in the 2nd Gen of Lumix cameras was really my big hurdle in upgrading to the S5 II lineup (almost sent me over to the S0ny world, may the lord forgive the almost-sin)

The 1.8 primes are amazing, and being so small you can pack nearly all of them up in a small case to keep in car in the event they are needed. I do a lot of shooting in poorly lit buildings and gyms, so the bright aperture comes in very handy. Love them. I also usually grab the Sigma 16-28 2.8 and the Panny S Pro 70-200 4 to get the really wide or really tight stuff. I shoot with the S5ii as my A cam, and a Canon R5 as my photography camera because I just cant convince myself to sell it and put all my chips in the Panny pot. It also gives me high quality 4k120 for when I am shooting sports and want some slow motion. Canon is extremely frustrating, but the lenses are undeniably good and in my opinion the R5 is still one of the best photo cameras on the market, if not the best. Will be picking up a S5iiX soon to be my second video camera, which like you, will flip flop between A and B depending on the shoot.

I am a content creator and have mostly filmed weddings but am transitioning to more commercial work. I got the s5iix like 3 weeks ago with the kit lens and the 50 mil, still on a learnign curve since I had been filming with my iphone, but these cameras are beasts!

Nice video and insight, Josh. I appreciate the thought and candor. I'm switching from Sony and Fuji to Lumix purely because of open gate and anamorphics for documentary work. The mid ranges always bore me. I find myself either shooting wide or tight. Establish and then cut to a punched in shot. That's just my style. A 70-200 is a must. And I don't have it yet but I ordered the 14-28 over the 16-35 because of the light weight. And now, based on this video, I'm going to look at the 100 macro. So thanks!

Interesting point on the focus distance of the 85mm! I love my 85 on my o.g S5, but the 100mm may be a lens that could replace it for that reason alone, might have to get a rental out to test it🤔 Currently kit lens+ 50+ 85... May sell the kit lens toward the sigma 24-70 as it seems an exceptional all rounder

For a hobbiest, I have a lot: My FF kit is a lumix S5, S1r, sigma 35 1.4 (not used much, too heavy), 24 & 50 f1.8 (later is normally, on my camera), 24-105 (walking around flexibility). I have an adapted vintage canon 24mm 1.4 (or something), and vintage nikkor 105mm (for macro), looks great but heavy and manual only. I also have a 24mm Astrihori probe lens, for fun inside the robots I have built shots. Looking forward to trying the 100mm F1.8, especially since it would work on a gimbal.

Josh, the only LUMIX autofocus lens I use on my S5II is the 24-105mm f4. Every other lens I use is with Voigtlander Lanthar-APO M mount or Minolta vintage MD adapted lenses. I use all of these lenses across my Leica M10-R and Nikon Zf kits. That said, I don't really do video. At least not at the moment. I'm primarily focused on photography. So the size and flexibility across different camera systems is a must. The 24-105mm f4 is a big lens but it's the only LUMIX need at the moment. If add another autofocus lens it would be the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8. I owned it before when I had the S5 but then I sold it. 😥

Can't lie. The Sigma 28-70mm has been a great addition. Love the Lumix 85mm f/1.8. Thinking hard about the 18mm but think I may go with the Sigma 16-28mm first to complete the range. If I did any product shooting the Lumix 100mm macro has really impressed in sample footage.

@joshl.6826 26 дней назад
I’m also trying to make the same choice between the 18mm and sigma 16-28mm to complement the 28-70 & 85mm - did you end up going with the sigma? Feels like the practical option, but the 18mm does look like a lot of fun to use with the small size and wide aperture 😅
@stoneylama
@stoneylama 25 дней назад
Haven’t yet but I think it’s happening. The Sigma will barely fit in my camera sling so I get the convenience of the LUMIX primes vs the larger zooms. Just feel like the range will come in handy. Will let you know when I pull the trigger. Honestly the lens I can’t seem to take off my S5II is the Sirui 1.33x anamorphic 35mm f/1.8 (thanks, Josh). Everything I shoot with it is beautiful. Makes me want to expand my collection of those anamorphic lenses. So many lenses to buy. 😂

In my studio all Blackmagic studio cams, but all b-roll, run and gun, and all other filming is s5iix with the Ninja Ultra, never use the kit lens, but oh my g9 which I still use a LOT is all of the m43 primes like the 9mm, 15mm and 24mm. G9 still does great footage and paired with those lumix lenses still does nice shots. I just bought Meike lenses instead of the lumix primes - probably a mistake as it’s all just for RU-vid but I don’t care. You have a nice collection.

Great video! Thanks for sharing your insights. Amateur here and mostly shoot nature/landscape. Lucky enough to have 16-35, 24-105 and 70-200 all f4. Most used are the 16-35 and 70-200. Have the new 100/2.8 on order! My primes are the Sigma 24/3.5 and 45/2.8, great for shooting small. Cameras are S1 w/vlog & S1R

The kit 20-60mm is a useful lens, unless you need those wide apertures. Features like half-macro close up at 26mm, and overall size make it a handy wall round lens. 35mm and 100mm also make a good combo.

So good to hear the truth bomb about external monitors (and by extension the trend for over-rigging gear -) - its just such an extra pain after you have got the client settled, chosen the set, lit client / set, set up audio, waited around while client and talent go for a coffee, try and get control of the set back, change set location due to client request, set up teleprompter, edit script because last-minute changes have come in, reload prompter, wait while client and talent answer important phone call, break for lunch, come back in 1 hour and then re set and finally roll for 3 minutes on the approved script - you get the idea ! - adding in a monitor ( or any unnecessary details to an already complex situation) to all of that becomes less than attractive I have a 5 inch HD directors monitor maybe 10% of the time - and usually only if the client knows what they are doing. General clueless comms persons (who is the contact point more often these days) has no idea about framming or preferences ) will generally just slow the shoot down if you give them a monitoring option - or start making extra shot requests just so they can be seen to be doing their job. So better not to give them the option. Their general concern these days is - can it also be used for vertical? (to keep the lying algorithm happy) But for clients who are discerning or actually have someone qualified in the job (becoming rare these days) - the monitor is nice to have. For focus pulling - the LCD or viewfinder with focus tools gets the job done well and I see no real advantage using the monitor. One last thing - the lag over HDMI will throw the client off. One of Lumix's few achilles heels. Simple = liberation.

I use the lumix 50mm 1.8, the canon 16-35 2.8 ef adapted and then two APS-C lenses, sigma 18-35 and 50-100 1.8 when I need to shoot 50fps. Camera is (mostly) s5ii
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron 7 месяцев назад
Ah that’s cool! So you mostly use adapted lenses! How do you find the AF performance when comparing to the 50mm?
@andreasbulowhansen9413
@andreasbulowhansen9413 7 месяцев назад
@JoshCameron autofocus with adapted EF is surprisingly good but not as fast as the lumix 50mm. It is also a little bit noisy because of the old motor on the sigma lenses (of course only a problem for video and barely noticeable if your mic is being boomed and/or you're running lavaliers). I am a bit oldschool so I'm manually focusing maybe 80% of the times but the AF is cool for some specific tracking shots. The new lumix primes are awesome and I'm probably picking one or two more up, mostly for photography. The main reason why I'm mostly shooting with aps-c lenses is the crop in 50p.

Thanks for video. Im filming with lumix s5 ii right now. Previously with s5 mk1. For my type of work i stick most of the time to 16-35 f4. However i really like to switch to my 35mm 1.8 or 85mm 1.8 depends on the situation. I also have 28-70 sigma and its my 2nd most used lens. Rarely, unfortunally im using 70-200 f4 because this lens is amazing for tight shots. Everything is rigged for handheld shooting. Cage, top handle, side handle, 7 inch monitor, base plate, rods, follow focus. However i dont use v mount battery as its not necessary yet for me 😅

S5m2x is my main camera out of the studio. I pack the Sigma 28-70 and or the Lumix 24-105, 16-35 f4 Pro, 85 f1.8 and 70-200 f4 Pro. If I need longer, the Sigma 100-400. I have 2 old S5's in my RU-vid studio. My wide camera has the Sigma 45 f2.8 and the close up camera has the 24-105. I use the 2 cameras going into a BM Mini switcher so I have NO JUMP CUTs like most RU-vidrs. I put the S5's in my studio as the resale value is so low. If I need as second camera in the field I take an S5.

Absolutely love the 18mm, especially when shooting 60 fps with the crop. But in my studio the most useful lens are the 35mm on my A cam and 50mm on B cam. Until I get the 100mm, the 24-105mm is most useful for product B-Rolls. Also the original S5 is such a good value on the used market that I’ve picked my 3rd one to act as an overhead cam. Nothing can beat original S5 for 700 euros (almost the same price as an action cam).

I bought the kit lens for the s5, and use that a fair bit. As much as I dislike kit lenses, this one is actually pretty good. Otherwise I use a Helios 44m and a few old Minolta lenses, all manual focus on adapters. The kit lens is my neutral lens for every situation. Otherwise it’s vintage stylised all the way 👍

Actually, on a Daily basis, it is my DMC-TZ101 (over 70,000 photos taken on daily bike rides) pocket camera, with my g9 & S series equipment mostly for weekend. Before the 101, it was a lumix TZ70 with 200K photos taken, and at least that may on the 70 before that (I like to turn pocket camera's on in my pocket and break the lenses).

Hi there! I really like the S5ii but the other day I had an issue with it not turning off during an interview. It was hooked up to an Atomos Ninja V so that might have impacted it, but I was really surprised that I had to take the battery out to turn it off. The interval footage was corrupted so luckily the Ninja V footage was a backup. Anyway I've read on reddit threads about various people having issues with their S5ii's and power/recording related problems. Have you ever heard of such issue? Cheers!

Thanks for the video, Josh. Have you seen a difference in image quality between the original S5 (and the S1) when compared to the S5II and S5IIX? There are a lot of people on facebook , and a handfull on youtube, who think that the S5II / S5IIX has oversharpened edges, while also having too much noise reduction. So they seem to imply that the finer detail is lost by noise reduction, but that edge detail is oversharpened. Any thoughts on this? Apparently it is worse in the standard profiles / CineD and CineV profiles, but less so in V-LOG. Maybe you can do a head-to-head comparison when you have a chance. Thanks.

Don't have a ton of gear but it gets used often. My A cam is an S5iiX usually with the 50mm F1.8 or the kit 20-60. B Cam is a GH6 and i'll put the Lumix 8-18 f2.8 on there most of the time or the G Vario 45-150 for close ups. Really can't decide on the next lens to get. Torn between the new macro 100mm or a 20-70 f2.8 for the S5iiX.

Panasonic 24-70 f2.8 almost all day long. 16-35 for gimbal real estate / hero people shots. Then its off to Micro four thirds GH6 land for the reach that the 100-300 gives you for sports video (the 6k is great for even more reach) - if I am looking to go super compact and low profile - the Sigma 16mm on the GH6 is pretty damn sweet and wide open looks like full frame (but you can go macro close with it)

But it has seriously let us down with the latest cameras, correct me if I'm wrong... - GH6 really has nothing new than what has been announced at launch.. I also got the new Sigma 70-200 2.8 and the 2xTC - which is awesome for event videography. I'd be happy to keep my kit, but am also somewhat facing a tough stretch in my 15+ years career as award winning UX and product designer. No job since 4 months - ouch. looking at getting a wide angle lens pretty soon so I can stop using the 20-60mm lol so you prefer the 18mm prime over the 16-35mm? I shoot a lot of corporate stuff as well, primarily interview setup types and will use my Sigma 35mm 1.4 as my primary lens lol and for broll shots I'll throw on the 28-70mm. If I need a wider establishing shot then that's where the kit lens comes in for the 20mm usage and then if I'm filming products then I have the Sigma 105mm Macro, which I'll occassionally use as a b-cam for interviews as well

For dance events/weekenders I like to get close up with the action so the 16-35 F4 at 16mm is great and i find the 24-105 F4 a very versatile lens for walkaround and interviews where i get the flexbility and i am weight limited on what i can carry. I am mainly video but lately looking at doubling up for photo when i dont want to take 2 lens systems with me abroad. I have the S5ii and S5iix so there is backup also. ( I used Nikon Z7ii, 24-70 f2,8 etc etc but also GODOX V1). So i am looking at GODOX V!-O for flash to equate to my photo setup.

Ah nice! You’ve got a decent setup then! Do you use both Lumix and Nikon currently then? Or just one of the two?

@@JoshCameron I use Nikon primarily for photos and some video if that’s the only camera on me. I was going down the route of having the Atomos V on the back of the Nikon and previously owned 2xS5’s but now I’ve upgraded to the S5ii and S5iix they are the primary video production cameras now. Still building up lenses but I have the 85mm 1.8 as I love that focal length for more intimate shots.

I like the simple black design of your studio. If I were choosing between these two cameras, I'd go for the X because I like the blacked out dials and logo. But, as I don't do client work, I will stick with my S5 and the 35mm 1.8. I bought this lense because I heard the autofocus works best with it but I would like to know if there are any other lenses out there now that do just as well with the S5.
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron 7 месяцев назад
The S5’s image quality is genuinely outstanding too. I won’t ever sell mine! It’s just too good. Have you tried any of the other 1.8 primes ? The AF performance is similar with most of them (85mm maybe being the worst by a tiny tiny bit)
@danquixote6072

@@JoshCameron Good to know, thanks. I hadn't pulled the trigger on another lense for the fear that AF was not as good as the 35. The 18 and 24 are tempting but I am thinking a zoom might be more practical.

Hey bro, you are my go to guy for all things lumix. Thanks for that. awesome work. any idea how to get drop in filters for lumix and Lmount lenses? best i've found is canon adapter (built in VND) with canon lenses. Am always struggling with vignetting when outdoors 👍

I use the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 for all my youtube stuff / guitar playthroughs, but my favourite lens I own is the Lumix 85 1.8, or the Laowa 90mm 2x Macro. When I do product shots I can't live without the Laowa. Insanely sharp, but all MF so this new 100mm has me intrigued. How's the autofocus on it?

S5ii and 24-105 (got from your recommendation). Just got a dumb adapter ef-L to try out my EF rokinon 14 2.8 and i have an ef 70-200 f4 i need to sell but at least i can play with it some before i sell it as im trying to decide if my next lens will be a 70-300 or 100-400 or if i should wait for the 100-500 or just go with the 70-200 f4 (mainly for landscape and socimentary). I also have a crappy old 35-80 canon kit lens that weighs like 200g i can try on my s5ii. If i like the light weight handling and feel enough, i might get the sigma 65 f2 or 50 1.4 or something

hey josh would you recommend the s5iix or the s1, I can't find a comparison anywhere. I'm on a bit of a limited budget so I am drawn to the s1 as I can get more gear to rig it out. However, I am intrigued by the s5iix and want to stay up to date. What do you think?

Can I ask Josh, do you get fainted fan like noise from the IBIS on your S5 when the camera is powered on. Even in manual, IBIS off or lens detached if I put my ear to the viewfinder I can hear an electrical noise. Issue is that it is getting picked up on the internal mic and on my external microphone and not sure if that sound is normal with the S5.

That’s probably the most versatile L-Mount lens there is though in my opinion. It’s lightweight, very sharp, and great AF performance. I absolutely love the 28-70!

I just purchased the LUMIX 24-70 but everyone I see is loving the Sigma 24-70, wondering if I should return the lumix and use the savings to pick up an additional lens. Is the difference between the Sigma and LUMIX noticeable for mainly video work?

Owww, im really lost in my future choice. I have sigma 24/70 2.8 and the 50mm 1.8 by Lumix. I want the 70/200 2.8 by sigma but for the ultra wide…. Should I buy the 18mm 1.8 or the 16/18mm 2.8 by sigma…. The price it’s the same but 1.8 or 2.8??? 😵‍💫 Does the 1 of difference justify the lost off range compared the the 16/28.. help
