*Having been a roadie for Lynyrd Skynyrd and having been to this crash site, Id like to say you did a great job on this presentation, on this holy ground!*
@Scotty Mack Sorry Scotty, I was in Jacksonville only two times, once to pickup Odom (Ronnies Buddy date unknown) and once in the late 1980s.... Was never in the bars there, was always working.
I remember arriving at school and hearing everybody talking about the crash. Skynyrd were pretty big amongst our student body and they were missed dearly. Nice job on this one guys. It still brings a tear to my eyes all of these years later.
same here. my sophomore year of high school. guys in my class were literally in tears about it. I am sad to say that I had no idea who Lynyrd Skynyrd was at the time. I eventually caught up. I grew up in South, MS but on the coast.
I was little girl but remember being at the grocery store with my mom that day and the teenager who took our grocery bags out to our car for my mom looked as if he had been crying. My mom asked him if he was ok and he told her about the plane crash and he had just been to their concert. They were his favorite band. So sad! Amy ~Greenville, SC
A couple of years ago my son sent me Simple Man via text to listen to."Mom, everytime I hear this song it reminds me of you." It meant alot to me as my adult son is a man of few words. My daughter's husband's father passed at a young age. His favorite song was Free Bird. Thanks Adam.
great video,Woo. I still have my ticket for the Skynyrd concert that was to be held at Madison Square Garden NYC on November 10th. '77. I have it framed and hanging on my living room wall...it is one of my most cherished possessions.
That’s my granddads old gas station. My grandmother lives a few miles down the road and the family has the gas station sign. My dad has a ton of family still in the town and a lot of them were the first ones to make it to the crash site. (It’s also pronounced Gillsburg like Vince Gill).
Deb from Idaho~~~~~What a wonderful tribute this town has given to one of the best bands that there ever was. RIP Ronnie and your fellow band entourage. FREE BIRD!!!!!
I just visited this site February 15, 2020. I was headed down to Baton Rouge to see Blackberry Smoke in concert. This memorial of Lynyrd Skynyrd is beyond beautiful and it was even more special when I visited that day because the owner of the land that donated this site and another gentleman whom both were at the crash that night was there telling everyone their story of that fateful night. ❤️
I didn't know that they built a memorial for them . That's nice . Gone too soon , but never forgotten . Sorry you guys got caught up in the rain . Thank you both for taking us along and sharing this video .
I remember about a month after the plane crash, a friend and I were shopping in the record department of Sears. I found a "Street Survivors" album with the original artwork (with flames around the band members). I was like "damn, I have to buy that". It's still in my album collection.
A very respectful vlog to a great classic rock band. The nature sounds of wind & rain drops during the closing shots made for a somber, moving experience.
When I was nineteen years old I was able to see Lynyrd Skynyrd during their "Gimme Back My Bullets" tour. This was in January of 1976, Corpus Christi TX, with the Outlaws as the opening act. I still have the concert flyer that I picked up at a Head Shop and it is framed, hanging up. That concert is in the Top 5 of the many that I have been to.Ed King had left the band and it was the "Two Guitar Attack " of Collins and Rossington. I still remember Ronnie Van Zany commenting that the stage was hot that night and that it was burning his bare feet. Man! When they closed with FREEBIRD the place came apart! Hearing FREEBIRD and GREEN GRASS AND HIGH TIDES at the same show was something that you never forget if you loved Hard Rock Southern Rock and Metal, the way I did then AND STILL DO! i'm 62 now, got diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure a month ago and they tore down the Coliseum several years ago, but I still fly my FREAK FLAG and I have my own little memorial to Skynrd which are three bricks held together by mortar that came from the Coliseum where I got to see the GREATEST SOUTHERN BAND', THE BAND THAT STARTED IT ALL, LYNRYD SKYNYRD! STARS AND BARS FOREVER!!!🎸🎶🔊🤣🤘😝✊
Collins and Rossington are good, but Steve Gaines was the master picker and player. Not only that, his voice was right up there with just about anyone in the rock scene at that time. He was super gifted, and fit in with Ronnie really well!
Tuesday's gone with the wind. Life can change suddenly & we can never go back and undo the past. Thanks Adam for doing this, you always have such great vids.
Adam, I like the way you allowed the rain and the silence to commemorate their memory, instead of background music. Nicely done. Rest peacefully, all of you.
I want to congratulate you, on over 440K. I've been around for a long time. I always give a thumbs up 👍, but no need to comment much. From Los Angeles California USA 🇺🇸 Mr. Hahn. Age 98
Great homage to the band & what happened back in October of 1977. I remember just sitting in shock when the word came out. I was able to setup Lynyrd Skynyrd's stage in Dover for Big Barrel Festival. Still have photos of the equipment. Never felt prouder than I did that day. Everybody was busy doing the last minute change over from Firefly. They had a great set & we got them loaded out real quickly and shook all their hands as they left. Gary was glad we knocked it out and allowed them time to get rest before they left. Thank you for sharing this video. I've heard alot about the memorial but yet to see it even in pictures. 👊👍🤘.
What a beautiful memorial. I didn’t realize it even existed until seeing this.Thank you for making this video. Like many people of my generation, many of those songs were the soundtrack to our youth. Street Survivors is such a great album because the band was growing and getting better as each year passed. I was just listening to this album the other day and I often wonder what they would have been able to produce after this. The bands entire works are classic and would still be historic if they were still alive. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ronnie’s brother Johnny and Gary Rossington and all the players for keeping the band going for all these years.
The plane that crashed was an old converted Convair. It was owned by an airline, then Jerry Lee Lewis bought it and converted it to an Entertainers Aircraft. Basically, the plane was "worn out" from years of use, when Jerry Lee Lewis sold it to an aircraft leasing company in Dallas, Texas. This Aircraft had a lot of problems in it's last years. Notice there is no mention of the two pilots that died. It was their bad judgement to keep flying that piece of crap without proper maintenance that was a major determining factor in the crash and lost lives. Thanks for another great tribute video Adam. Excellent viewing.
The actual airframe was in fine shape, but the engines, more than likely were nearing overhaul. The problem was a bad mag, which controls the ignition timing. Thus, the engine runs really rough, and consumes fuel at twice the rate as compared to a properly timed engine. They had a bad case of "get there itis", (very common saying in aviation circles) which is the cause of many aircraft crashes. Pilots push on instead of landing, thinking just a little bit more and we'll be there. It has costed thousands their lives!
first of all you were not there - you have no idea what the pilots were thinking - I know this - they didn't want to die either - No one gives them any credit for the 20 people who lived - No good comes from being critical of those who can't defend themselves
@@davidrice3337 You need to go to the RU-vid Channel "True Backstage and Road Stories". This is Mark Howards You Tube Channel. He was on that Aircraft. He was lucky enough to have survived the crash. He was Lynyrd Skynyrds Lighting Technition. He will tell you in detail about that flight and exactly what happened. This man has been a Lighting Technition for the biggest Touring Rock and Country Music Acts for decades. A true legend.
Great job guys!! An excellent vid paying tribute to the best Southern Rock Band to ever hit the stage. I loved LS and especially Ronnie. I bought Street Survivors on the day it was released. Saw em in concert in February of 77, and said goodbye in October of same year. Fly High Gang. You’re All Free Birds Now.. Much Love from NC.
Enjoyed the video. We were able to visit the site a while back with permission to recover artifacts related to the crash. The owners of the actual crash site are very protective of it and we were asked to keep watch for anyone trespassing. Currently we were also contact by band family members about some of those items being in an upcoming Skynyrd museum or other similar type of location. We displayed the relics free to the public for the first time last month in SC at a relic show.
Went to Allen Collins's home and met his mom. I sold her a cell phone many years ago. Didn't even realise who she was until I started noticing the gold records on the wall of her living room.
I brought french doors to Leon Wilkinsons house years ago in Ponte vedra ..he had a house in sawgrass....records all over the place ..fucking awesome memory
Very nice memorial they have there. On a side note I don't know if everyone else commenting knows that some time before Lynyrd Skynyrd decided to use this plane there was another band that at some point had considered using it and ultimately decided not to. That band was Aerosmith. It is somewhat fitting that you are doing this video on a cloudy, rainy day.
Interesting. I do believe this was also the last time they were going to use this plane as it had too many issues in the months leading up to this. They were going to buy a new plane.
I had the pleasure of being at a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert back in the 70s. I'm glad I got to see and experience the show. I wasn't disappointed. Thanks for taking us to this memorial site. Its beautifully done!
I was living in McComb, MS when the plane crashed. They flew fairly low over McComb on their way to Baton Rouge that night. A friend was playing football that night and said the plane flew low over the football field.
5Rounds Rapid ... yes they did, but that was after they flew past the city and airport which is located just south of McComb in Fernwood, MS. The rumor that was passed around at the time was they passed on landing at the airport the first flyby because they were worried about crowds arriving. But, I think that was just a rumor..... who knows.
My Grandparents lived in Gillsburg, MS and I lived in Magnolia, MS. I remember as a child hearing about the crash but didn't come to know who it was until I got older.
Beautifully done! Thanks for doing this video! And that memorial site is gorgeous! This has brought back a lot of memories. Again, thank you! God bless! 💞💞
Beautiful memorial for a band the world loved so much. I am happy to have grown up listening to them and recall the tragic day when we got the news. Thank you for showing this and it was befitting the sky was crying at this sad place.
I was almost 7 years old when this happened. Not until I was an adult did I start loving this band and buying all their albums. I love every song they sing with the exception of maybe one. They'll always be my favorite rock band. Such a tragedy and loss. But thank goodness we will always have their music. I love the concert here on RU-vid that was recorded at Knebworth fair. It used to be the full concert video but now it's blocked. You can still watch it in parts. That was the best concert video of them imo. Smh
I was a tiny baby when the Lynyrd Skynyrd crash happened. My parents particularly my mom were fans of theirs and would have their records blasting all of the time. I can only imagine how big of a band they would be today if the crash had not happened.
Wow I can't believe we've lost Elvis in August and Lynyrd Skynyrd 2 months later 77 was a rough year for rock and roll thanks to both of you awesome video God bless you both
Thanks for posting this video, it still breaks my heart to this day and makes my eyes sweat over this tragedy as a fan since 74 when I first heard them, God bless them all and may they R I P
This is crazy! I was just watching stuff about this last month. Skynyrd has been following me around since! Awesome video! RIP to all members that have passed on.
I’ve been so sick the last few days and binge watching your videos. You have a very good and soothing delivery and go to very interesting places. Thank you for helping me keep my mind off how bad I feel Adam & Cody
I have one of the original copies of "Street Survivors", which were recalled shortly after the crash. That cover had a picture of the band and flames engulfing the buildings all around them. Quite a tragic foreshadowing of their untimely demise.
I had that original pressing with the flames engulfing them. They had a trade back you could do with the black background. It was out of respect for the dead members so I went ahead and traded my copy. I kinda wished I didn't but it's cool. My other plays the same and the original cover makes me sad anyways.
Adam....thanks so much for this video, they were my fav. Band back then! Always wanted to go to Gillberg, Ms to see this Memorial! Now, I’m disabled & can’t . Thanks!!! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Great vlog Adam and cody you know when you can have a laugh and you know when not to say alot at all thak you for doing this with the respect it deserves
Great video. Showing (or just mentioning) the last prices on those gas pumps would've added historical ambiance. As for the ending, my l;ate grandfather once said, "That which is unsaid often speaks the loudest."
Thank you so much for this video. I grew up a Skynyrd fan thanks to my dad. From an early age, I remember him telling me and my sister is that Lynyrd Skynyrd is the greatest band ever to live, die and rise again. And that is the truth! Skynyrd is in my blood and in my heart and I am so thankful you have done this video as I will probably not be able to get my dad there to see it in person. Thank you!!!! My favorite Skynyrd songs are Call Me the Breeze, I Never Dreamed, and The Ballad if Curtis Loew.
Wow the rain sets the ambiance for this vlog. What a tragedy. My mom watched with me and told me the day this happened her and a lot of her friends left work to smoke a joint for those lost in the crash. Free Bird is my most favorite song by them. Great great song
I saw them at soldiers field almost 3 months before the crash The best concert I’ve ever been to!!! Will never forgot that show Rest In Peace brothers Freebird still fly’s on😢😢😭😭
JustAintThatWay I was at the same place but about 10 rows up from the main field!😁😁😁that’s where the water jugs started to get thrown 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻Awsome show!!
Thanks Adam. They did a nice job on the memorial. I was in my early 20's then, like about everyone my age was really into Skynyrd and was crushed to hear the news. I especially liked Steve Gaines guitar playing, although he wasn't with them long before the crash he was amazing, great style, clean, flawless live. They toured relentlessly in those days so I saw them after every album release/tour. I have a lot of favorite Skynyrd tunes, actually, I can't think of a pre-crash Skynyrd song I don't like.
Thank you adam and cody. It was awesome to see that. I am fan of Skynyrd. Have been since I was a teenager in the 90's. It was beautiful thing to see that memorial. Thanks again Adam.
I was overseas in the Air Force and had bought their latest album with the infamous cover showing the band on fire before it was pulled. I don't know how rare it is but I'll never sell it.
If I recall, the weather that day in October 1977 was much like it was here; cold, wet and dreary. I'd just stumbled into my 1st period classroom at Biloxi High, a junior. We'd heard the news with shocked disbelief, not yet knowing the crash occurred in MS, only 150 miles away. For some reason, it made the tragedy even harder to bear. For those who paid for and built the memorial, many thanks. It's beautiful. And also, thanks guys for putting this video together.
Thanks for posting. Had them in my cab when they were in Waterbury, Connecticut around 1976 to play the Palace Theater. Took them to a local rock bar to hang out. What a thrill for the crowd in there that night! Nice memory. So sad when I heard the plane went down.
Thank you two Gentlemen for your great effort bringing too us the memorial shown here.I'm 79yrs and i watch the video of free bird at the Oakland Colosseum at least twice a year.⌚ran⌛for these folks way too soon.🗽🗽🗽
One of my first jobs I ever had was working a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert selling live cuts of their music on CDs when EMI music had the rights to it. The band which opened before them was Allman Bros who are really awesome in their own right. Anyway, even from where I was stationed away from the pavillion, their music sounded as good live as it did over the radio.
Beautiful memorial for the band members who perished that fateful day. Sad day. One of my favorite song of theirs is Sweet Home Alabama. Thank you for doing this. CO-D being a real trooper. Stay safe on the road.
Rick Mark The monument was. There had been an unofficial one there for decades. The State of Mississippi finally got the funding together and made it permanent.
Based on the Pepsi machine at the gas station selling at 45 cents, I’d say the gas station closed around 1980-1983. I can recall canned soda prices in vending machines going up to 50 cents around 1984.
Thank you for making this video! I have been a Skynyrd fan since I was 9. I can remember the heartbreaking day the plane crash happened....😢💔 My son and I danced the son and mom dance at his wedding to Simple Man. LOVE SKYNRYD! And I enjoy your videos!
