I love the original Mad Max. It’s such a force in budget film making. It does such a great job building the world with nothing.

The Interceptor (XB Falcon) is one of the most iconic movie cars in history. It is instantly recognisable.

With a film like Mad Max, I find the lore very interesting Because the funny thing is that almost every vehicle in Fury Road that appears in the film has lore This gives the vehicles character because it means the vehicles are visually a little more refined There's a whole film about it

I cannot remember the source, but someone somewhere said that Mad Max was an "urban legend" and the different movies were like different people telling the version of the story they had heard. I don't know Miller thinks of this, but I rather like the idea.

Fury Road is supposed to AFTER the 1st movie but somewhere between the 2nd an 3rd... Which is why it fits so well. They TRIED to respect an build on the franchise in a way that both made sense an looked good while being totally badass looking in way that made sense.

While the characterization is somewhat light in Mad Max 1, I do like that everyone is a little bit unhinged already. Society was ready to blow up, it just needed a spark.

i just got out from watching Furiosa and i absolutely loved it. zero fat. visually stunning. it gets dark AF. The additional context for the different settlements is rad too. i was dubious about the film when it was announced and wasn't too excited for it because a prequel was not what i wanted, but its what i got....and it was really good.

I like to think that George Miller is an unreliable narrator trying to piece together the 'saga' of Mad Max, but with limited information, hence the inconsistencies and occasional vagueness. It's also worth pointing out that the version of Max in 'Fury Road' would have had to have been born after the apocalypse in order to explain why the world has degraded so rapidly, so really, the continuity between the films is not something worth obsessing over.

The global nuclear conflict clearly takes place between MM and MM TRW. It is possible there was a limited nuclear war with a larger, final one that takes place after the conclusion of TRW. But, none of the people at the oil refinery, or Max himself, ever references any kind of functioning civil society or govt structure of any kind. Even the opening narration alludes to some kind of nuclear conflict, though to what extent, again, unclear. Beyond thunderdome clear shows the nuclear war was global and extensive. In the Road Warrior, it unlikely a full on nuclear war was underway at that time, but, a LIMITED nuclear exchange, imo, had occurred even if Australia was not directly hit. To me, the idea that no nuclear exchange between MM and MM: TRW, is unlikely.

George Miller wrote all these movies AND THE GAME with a specific story in mind. Once you watch FURIOSA you will see just how much it makes the GAME canon

Theres so much little lore bits unkown by a majority. Like did you know theres a cult called crow fishers that are humans on stilts dressed in dark robes wearing plauge doctor masks. Pretty weird stuff

Toecutter is an Australian slang term for someone in the trade union movement who enforces the rules.

Who run Bartertown?

Well, they were out in the middle of western Australia, so it probably took the collapse of civilization years to catchup. But, where do they keep getting gas from? Like civilization completely collapses, and yet years later, people are still driving around with gas guzzlers. You need oil rigs, a refinery, a supply chain to get that out to local refueling stations, power plants and power lines, and pumps, you’ll also need oil and oil filters. And tires, brakes, suspensions, starters, batteries all ware down. And that’s on normal road conditions, with people driving acceptably. That’s my only criticism.

The thing I find fascinating about the wasteland setting is given the young age of the lost boys in Beyond Thunderdome someone was still operating large jet airliners that far into the collapse where gas is being fought over by roving gangs and places like bartertown have already been established.

You're missing some context re: Toe cutter and the MFP. One of toecutter's goons gets arrested and later is freed by a slimy lawyer. Toecutter is out for revenge and happens upon the cop who arrested him. And ultimately takes out his revenge on him. Max goes on vacation and then Toecutter's gang finds them by chance.... The death of his family pushes him over the edge and the rest is future!! 😂

Somehow I find the hues and colors of Mad Max 1 to be more appealing that more recent releases, including the 2015 version. Does anybody know what sort of film/camera or technique were used then vs now?

I look at Fury Road as a soft reboot.

I do enjoy trying to better understand the overall setting; but I do like to keep that enjoyment separate from experiencing the story/movie (if that makes sense). I really enjoyed Fury Road as it felt like it continued that Apocalyptic Legend of the wasteland; and even elevated/leaned into it. I just watched Furiosa yesterday and I absolutely loved the storytelling of it as it did what I hoped it did: distinguish it from the rest of the Mad Max series as this was not a Mad Max story; just set in its world.

on one side a connected Storyline over multiple decades are great and elevate the overall experiance on the other side: it's just nice to have just enjoyable films that you don't really need to connect that much like Star Wars In the End, does it really matter if it's the same Mad Max or just a incarnation of an Archetype like with Link and Zelda, where they often aren't the same people in the next game

If certain aspects of Mad Max seem to ring any bells for more contemporary viewers, it's because the setting of the Fallout games was at least partially inspired by the premise and aesthetics of Mad Max. Also, I can hear the drums in the distance... discord on the air... if anyone recognizes those lyrics, you know something wonderful.

Considering they give absolutely no back story or even dialouge to Max in Fury Road we have to assume his back story is the same but maybe set in a different timeline

Fury Road looks like it is set many decades into a post-apocalyptic future (or after the first Mad Max), in which case Max should be 100 years old or something. But he is not, so that is the part that confuses me.

For me it depends some films are set up with lore in mind others aren't so it just depends on how it's all set out for me.

For me, I am a Lore person, but has to be a solid series for me to dive in. That said, the lore needs to be reasonably consistent- there can be some adjustments that can (in-universe) explained by different perspectives the like- but completely ignoring canon (or established (again, in-universe) lore/rules) for the RULE OF COOL does get the sigh

Mad Max is one of my favorite movie franchises hands down, I remember watching it nearly every time I would catch it on tv. I saw Fury Road in theaters and it was glorious wild ride all the way trough. I don’t know about this new one though, I like the character of Furiosa but in the trailers I’ve seen so far it seems like too much cgi. To me the beauty of those movies was in the practical effects and the grittiness. . Although I loved Fury Road some of it was a little over the top with the storm, very cool scene altogether and because it was so cool it gets a pass. I just love the movies and I’m looking forward to seeing this one too

Deeper dive!

First of all I want to enjoy a Movie by it's own. Buuuut my (kind of) OCD Brain part ;) wants things to get orginazed, otherwise it runs thought circles in the background :D. So I would love to have an continuity and timeline. For me it even would make the hole thing more epic, because then I can see it as a big complex story, insteed of single enjoyments, which would tickle my intelect more ;).

I don't know why it never occurred to me, but if the Main Force Patrol or town's people were armed with guns they could have ambushed the bikers and killed them all.

The first Mad Max is the best.

I've come to the conclusion that the Mad Max in Fury Road is a different person to the Mel Gibson's Mad Max. This is the timeline I found online: Mad Max 1984, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior 1987 - 1988, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome 2003 - 2005, Furiosa 2034 & Mad Max: Fury Road 2050. If Mel Gibsons was in his early 20s in Mad Max that would make him about 90 in Fury Road. If you assume Max is the same character in Fury Road and that Mad Max and Furiosa were about the same age then the younger Furiosa would happen before the original Mad Max where there was still some semblance of society, which doesn't work. So, the idea is that Mad Max in Fury Road is either a descendant or someone taking on the persona. Originally, I thought it could be the feral kid from Mad Max 2 based on the mannerisms of Mad Max in Fury Road but that doesn’t work with the timeline above, the feral kid would be in his late 60s or possibly 70 in Fury Road.

The fact that "mad maxs savages" can be used as shorthand in reviews or discussions of games and movies and everyone just instantly knows what type of enemies/bad guys they should picture really shows the impact this series has uad on pop culture. And honestly im fine with the series lore being a bit messy and Max himself being more a folk hero than anything. Can always just write off the inconsistencies (like his age) or seemingly impossible bits as story tellers embelishing the tales when repeating them

I guess I always like lore for things. I'm big about consistency within a franchise. This doesn't mean I oppose ALL retcons, but I feel retcons should make sense, feel logical within the universe, etc. I also don't mind just fun romp around the world stories. My bigger fear with almost all modern stuff is people injecting modern politics into them. RARELY does it make sense to do so, and it almost always is ham-fisted and not fitting or worse - preachy.

As far as im concerned, nothing outside of mad max, the road warrior and thunderdome are cannon. The other stuff is just weak, to me. It's fine with me if others disagree, thats just my take.
