Hi, to be fair the Comac 919 looks cool. It just looks like a mix of the A220, A320, A350 and 787 combined. You can definitely tell the engines are western by the sound. (LEAP 1C). Keep up the work Josh
I just flew in the brand new #1 C919 between Shanghai and Chengdu on 11/22 and 11/28. I found it very similar to AB A320neo. Much quiter than Boeing 737-800 and sleeker roomier. More legroom for me at 5'10". Bathroom definitely feel roomier than that on a B737. Headrest and tray table both are comfortable and nicely design. The service and meal on China Eastern is very much like those on an international flight. ❤❤❤
Please show us how smooth landing of Chinese pilot. I have noticed from my previsous China Air companies trips. In the US, they all always hard landings. Thanks
I read that the plane ✈️ doesn't have the range or has the engine fuel savings that its opponents have... a320 or 737 That's why no other Airlines outside China are flying it.
The 919 is very competitive and on par in terms of technology as the a320, such as the latest cfm-leap engines and avionics. The Comac carries significantly less fuel than the Airbus which is ideal for short domestic flights with range extensions just being a matter of an extended centre tank. International adoption is a product of politics, supply chain, pilot training and airframe maturity. It makes no sense for many airlines to take a risk on a new 919 when a 737/a320 is so well known and affordable 2nd hand. Give the Chinese a decade or two and it will be a very capable aircraft on the global stage.

@@thomasecosseMost nations don't care. And the South-east Asia region is the largest growing market in the world. In addition to that, every 919 they sell is a lost sale for Boeing and Airbus.
Nice video, Josh! Just like is the case with electronics, it is not possible to have an aircraft with all parts manufactured by the same design organization, or by factories within the same country. This happened in the past, specifically with Soviet-built aircraft but it does not happen anymore. Just check out the 787, it has bits manufactured in Spain, Japan, U.K, etc. The Sukhoi Superjet has Italian-manufactured engines. The COMAC is Chinese-designed and certified (initially). That is all that matters. Having components manufactured in other parts of the world does not make it a "foreign" aircraft. Aviation Safety is something the Chinese take very seriously and statistically, they have one of the safest airspaces in the world. When aviation accidents happen, it may not necessarily be a fault with the equipment. It could be caused by several other organizational and/or human factors. Would I fly the COMAC? Definitely yes!
Because of West pro-sanction practices, China will go the same route as its high speed train technology, reaching 90%+ of domestic components content, esp. the critical parts.
@@mingouczjcz3800 I don't think that will be the case for aircraft manufacturing. However, even if that is the case, many countries already recognize China's airworthiness codes which means that China has a reputable Civil Aviation industry so even if 90% of the components are domestically manufactured, the aircraft will be easily marketed abroad.

I don’t think that we will see this aircraft within the EU or US airlines at least soon, but it will be successful in Asia, Africa and probably Latin America
Can't trust anything that is" Made in China". Most of them are ripoffs and of low quality that hardly lasts. Only good thing is that it is comparitively cheap.
I think probably not out of asia in next ten years. Because it takes time to ramp up production and fulfill the more than a thousand domestic order. It needs probably around 10 years.
I know a country whose space shuttles explode on lift off and who have no high speed rail systems whose latest model airplane has had several documented malfunctions
Looks good to me. Not sure why one would be worried about travelling on a Chinese aircraft - a significant percentage of the electrical goods etc. are made in China and work absolutely fine. One may disapprove of their political system but one has to admire their enterprise. And Airbus/Boeing need some effective competition. Great video Josh - as always.
What is wrong with their political system? They are miles ahead of England and USA. England is broke, and USA owes over $33 Trillion.Soon China will lead in most all fields, so i think their system is ok. Oh, you believe if i say something negative about the government they will shoot me. Keep believing that BS, as China continues to advance.

Regarding the point on whether one would fly on a China-manufactured plane: The fact is many Airbus A320 that we are flying (at least here in Asia) ARE manufactured in Airbus Tianjin, since 2008.
If the plane's performance proves that it is very reliable, cheap to maintain etc. then It will probably succeed in the Chinese market. After that it will probably slowly crop into other markets like Central Asia, Africa and South America. The Western Market will probably be the last one to see this plane as AirBus and Boeing will try and protect the Western Market.
Seems really interesting, don't really fly a lot but I like flying and the C919 seems pretty spacious I think I would try it if I had the chance to do so
The comac c919 is not a totally China made aircraft. It's a multi lateral product. It's parts come from multiple western aviation industry. I reckon improvement only come by competition. Good work COMAC.
All commercial aircraft, from Boeing to Airbus , are made of parts from various suppliers because of the economics of scale and the need to satisfy the IATA requirements . It is also not economically viable for a single company making all the parts by itself. The competition is in design and specifications. Only military planes are made totally from scratch by local companies because the cost is not important and they don't need to meet the IATA specifications.
COMAC are airframers and depend on other companies for providing services to the plane they assemble. Just like a main contractor building a building. The main contract deoend on sub contractor to built the aircon, electricity, plumbing, Internet and etc to complete the building. Comac as the main contractor need foreign company for the landing geaes, the engine, plumbing, avionics, comunication, lavatory, catering, audio visual, seats and etc
"The comac c919 is not a totally China made aircraft." Are you not aware that neither are the Boeing and Airbus planes we see at airports around the world? They too have components, systems and sub-assemblies made by other countries.
So great! Don't know how but it actually looks better than Airbus and Boeing aircrafts! As you said the design is very sleek and the interior is great too 😊 I'd love to fly in one of these
Off topic, but I really wish China and the US would open up their skies to each other's carriers again without restrictions. I have flown China Eastern out of ORD before and was pleasantly surprised how good their business class product was with a price that couldn't be beat.
Slow and steady to maintain quality unlike Boeing with many issues due to production... Here not bokted... there not bolted... Hammer left in the wings and under the floor board.
It's truly inspiring to witness the remarkable achievements of our neighboring country (I'm from Bangladesh). From constructing an entire Space Station to now setting sights on advancing the Airplane industry, their progress is truly commendable. What an incredible journey!

Definitely neat to see a new airliner take to the skies and will be cool to see how it will be fully implemented and also how it performs once China develops its own engines for it Would be neat to be able to fly on it for sure.
We happily drive cars made in China, along with pretty well everything else, so why not the Comac? The seat pitch in economy would put some airlines premium economy to shame. I would definitely give it a go!
The made in China EVs are selling well in many European countries, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey and Russia Green technology EVs, and solar panels the Chinese government is encouraging its citizens to reduce carbon emissions.
As a Brazilian who works in Aviation where we have Embraer, the third largest aircraft manufacturer in the world, I think the Chinese should be proud of this achievement. If we were in a normal geopolitical environment they wouldn't need to worry about their own engines or avionics, but knowing that the US and the EU can retaliate, sanction in addition to blocking the approval of the aircraft by the FAA and EASA (even to protect Boeing and Airbus) I think they have strong reasons to worry.
do you think, that there are threats in the future, that staged accidental accidents, fatal crashes are triggered by the worlds largest secret service?? They will blame it to bad construction, in order to get a trillion dollar market without competitors.
As a Chinese national studying in Singapore, I feel proud that you enjoyed our aircraft! Hope you enjoyed your trip in China! Do you know today China Eastern just received their third C919 (B-919D)?

I do think it is pretty awesome that China is joining the aircraft manufacturing business. So hopefully we are gonna see a bit more verity at airports like back in the 90s and 80s.
Even the Chinese know that 80% of the parts are made/designed in US and EU. China's commercial aviation is simply too nascent to have a proper industry to support a radical design of their own. This blogger probably knows that and is having a laugh.
Love watching your videos and I always learn something new each time. My goal has always been to travel and I am slowly getting there! This plane looked really nice. I think the leg room in economy looked pretty bad though. Food looked great!
Fascinating aircraft. You are correct about China, infrastructure is very modern and new with regard to airports. I too flew Business on China Eastern. Great vid and good memories for me of the friendliness of the Chinese people which I again saw through this video. Enjoyed this video and amazing to see the first C919. The Chinese guy beside you in Business made me laugh as he sampled his meal. His face was gold!
Can’t wait to try the plane out..as my country did buy a few of them.Really love what you did..letting us know which aviation company can or don’t take;)
My 5g modem , made in China, my sky worth tv too, all the phones in the house, our printers, microwaves most of the appliances all good so why not aircraft, yes probably. Unlikely over Europe or North America. Probably will find buys in Africa. I think Air Zimbabwe has one on order.
If you are frequent flyer, you will appreciate the peoples involved in this industry, whatever color, and wherever they are. They are one team to learn the best practices available and put them to service flyers whatever xotlor and wherever they are. Lets not discriminate them and give credit to everyone of them be them from the west or from the east. They are dedicated people who give their best without racial prejudice. All other should emulate their dedicated service to mankind.
I definitely would fly it, I don't know of any instances of improperly secured plug door flying out of Comac at high altitude ;) In all seriousness, more competition is a GOOD thing for common people. It's the only thing that might encourage Boeing to start treating passenger safety more seriously (since US government doesn't care much about it).
Really Nice experience, it can be the game changer in an aviation story. In Indonesia itself Trans nusa already have 2 of Comac ARJ 21 and it will be more in order.
As a Chinese, I appreciate your fair and encouraging comments. Indeed it has many western parts, but at least it is a good start. Also glad that you enjoyed it🎉
Chinese has this saying ”路是人走出来的!”(Literally, Roads / pathways are made by human walking!”. The more US & West tries to obstruct China’s growth & developments in technology, the more they strive to achieve for its self sufficiency and survival.
This is really exciting! It's a beautiful plane and I was surprised by how quiet it seemed compared to Boeing and Airbus planes. Competition is always great to have :)

Why not? Everything is made in China. You get what you pay for. If you want cheap Chinese products, their quality will reflect that. If you pay more, you'll get higher quality.
True, many years ago, I know of a company who source its products from China. When asked how his wares are of so good quality, he answered: "When ordering from the factories, you must bargain.....up, not down." When you're satisfied with the prices quoted and the shown samples, offer to pay them a 10-20% premium to ensure that what you will receive will be the quality you were shown or better." They will want a good customer to go back to them.

Love your videos and adventures Josh. Thank you so much for sharing the world with us. I would love to be in consideration for the C919 safety card. My dad’s about to have surgery . He was a Cessna pilot long ago.. I’d love to give him the safety card as a get well gift.
It actually looks like such a nice plane! I don’t see why they couldn’t expand into western markets but I feel Boeing and airbus would prevent that somehow cause of how cheap it is they would no longer get stand a chance. But does look really good :)
Not entirely made in China. Most of the components are sourced outside of China for the C919. The aircraft contains Honeywell’s electricity system and landing gear, GE’s flight recorder, CFM Leap’s engine. These are US and European components on that airplane.
Uttery awesome. The C919 is very airbus like (even the cockpit) however it also has some of its own flair. Definitely one to check out if i go to china
Engine is CFM LEAP-1C - of course it is going to sound familiar. LEAP-1A is with Airbus A320NEO families LEAP-1B is with Boeing 737MAX families. It might be quieter because the engine is a bit further than the other two, its cabin is also the widest in the class. The plane is not only containing foreign components, but also developed with consultation from Boeing - they have a finishing plant in Zhoushan, just outside Shanghai. Everything about the C919 is "right", efficiency that is slightly better than previous generation planes (A320 and 737NG) but not yet at the level of 737MAX, A220, E-jets E2, and A320NEO, mostly because of its weight - the material science knowledge is not there... yet.

Good for China. However, don't underestimate how difficult this will be to scale up. There are millions of parts, thus millions of joints, fits, connections that ALL must work, for years. Add in fatigue and corrosion and routine/non-routine service, it's a minefield of details that make a good plane (actually any high tech product). No matter how smart you are, how good your tools/computers, it's make-and-fix, iteration to get it right. Or... simply copy what everybody else is doing.
Considering the state Boeing is currently in (just another fucking incident recently as I type this! Latam Flight 800), Americans have no place to be laughing at Chinese made planes.
...and the C939 is also on the planing pipeline. That's in the class of the 777X and the A350-1000. Capacity wise, C929 is equivalent to 787/A330 and C919 to 737/A320.
This is just awesome on every level. China has really hit the milestones these last 30 years. 2nd biggest economy in the world. Launched their own GPS constellation Baidu. The first nation to have a sole space station (without collaborating with other nations) in orbit, the Tiangong. Have their own home grown commerical jet airliner in service. Be the first to land a rover on the dark side of the moon. The second nation to land a rover on Mars. I think I have most of the amazing achievements. I'm so proud of the motherland and I wish it more good fortune!
"The f̶i̶r̶s̶t̶ third nation to have a sole space station (without collaborating with other nations) in orbit, the Tiangong." The first was the former USSR with the Salyut in 1971 and the second being USA's Skylab of 1973. But yes, it currently has the only independent orbital space station. "Be the first to land a rover on the d̶a̶r̶k̶ far side of the moon." The short of it is: the Moon faces the Earth during the two weeks it reflected the sunlight to Earth. As it revolves around the Earth, it also rotates on its own axis. Therefore, the far side faces the Sun while it's unseen from Earth for the next two weeks. "The second nation to land a rover on Mars." Right, and i'll expand on it. The first rover was the USA's Sojourner in 1976 and China did it in 2021 with Tianwen 1. However, China was the first to have done it 3-in-1: ie orbiter, lander and rover all in one go rather than separate missions. For further information, the former USSR conducted the first successful Mars Landing, in 1971, but the lander (without rover onboard) failed after less than 2 minutes. You're welcome!
You left a couple of grains of rice in your bowl! Chinese superstition has it that it means you will marry an ugly wife, so my parents told me to always clean my bowl out when I was a kid. Now I have a beautiful wife.😅
I'm glad to see Boeing getting competition. I think they've been falling behind in the airline industry over the last few years. Same for Airbus. I still have reservations about flying on the Comac 919, just like I had with the first Dreamliner. Great review as always Josh. Safe travels.
The aircraft looks very similar to A320, both outside and inside. At least they copied the better one (in my opinion). I'm courious how corrupt they were with the development of this. We will see.
The Chinese have all the Chinese equivalent of landing gears and avionics .. as they have fully localized large planes including jet engine. They do have a local cj1000a local alternative turbo fan which should be ready by 2025
This plane will never reach the western market. Why? Because West will never provide it with air worthiness certificates and necessary licensing even if it is all good. West will do it to protect the monopy of Boeing and Airbus in the market, in short monopoly of West in commercial aircract manufacturing business. This has already happend with Sukhoi and is evident will happen in future too with any non western aircraft manufacturer.
I would have no problem flying the Comac 919. In fact, I would feel safer on it then the B737 Max. And having flown China Eastern in the past their service truly is excellent.
I love all the enthusiasm! Ever since the Y-10 (superannuated airplane geeks like myself will know about that one), I have been interested in Chinese aviation. I look forward to flying this very plane - albeit with a 1:400-scale model.
There are 4000 airplanes in China. We estimate that in 5 years, we can manufacture 150 C919 aircraft per year. So replacing 4000 aircraft in China may take more than 20 years.😂

This is going to make aviation much more interesting. That said, I wonder how many hoops the FAA will make Comac jump through to certify the 919 for international travel or for sale in US. If I'm being cynical, I suspect they'll be a smidge more rigerous than they were with say the 737Max or the Dreamliner.

Hello, Josh, very interesting video! Good for China for developing such a great airplane and putting it into service! As far as I understand, the engines of the airplane are not developed by the Chinese, but by General Electric and the French company Safran. Fly to Russia next year to do a review on the MC-21.
