Sam, I've gotta ask you. How does one understand how to analyze art? Beyond purely looking at it at face value. Is it through studying art critique and analysis? Did you develop this eye through schooling? Please, teach a man to fish

Personally, I did similar kind of analysis in my art class in college. He might have learned his tricks in school.

three responses, all intertwined: 1) I was a double humanities major (Italian + Spanish & Portuguese) , which meant I was looking at tons of art and film throughout college and analyzing media for essays. I'm now working on a doctorate doing much the same thing. 2) Mike Linnemann. Everything I do goes through him, and his massive archive of work is what I reference before I do anything. He's a monumental guide to me: www.gatheringmagic.com/author/mikelinnemann/ 3) I read everything an artist writes about their own work. Many have blogs or have produced books (like Avon here), so the insight is irrefutable and explicit. They tell you what they do and how they do it, and this informs everything you look at henceforth.

John Avon is by far my favorite artist for lands, and I also see that you did balance the music and your voice better in this video. Thank you so much Sam this was perfect! My favorite Avon piece(s) would be the unhinged lands, as I play modern Grixis and they are perfect aesthetically for me as a player

John Avon's lands always stood out to me, even when I was a kid who didn't understand what the lands were supposed to do.one of the Onslaught forests captivated me. It was a straight thicket with the morning sun shining through in the background and a verdant jungle filled with imagined plant life. He just illustrates serenity so well.

Without a doubt my favorite piece of John Avons is his Invasion forest. Something about the mysterious atmosphere of the forest and the ominous figures in it just speaks to me. And of course, as you pointed out, all of that is possible because of his wonderful use of light. Can't wait to see part 2!

When I began to get Magic Cards, even before playing constantly, I got one that absolutely got me into John Avon's Art. It was a simple card, not even a land, and it made me seek for other cards designed by him. It's the Fellwar Strone from 9th Edition. I was amazed by how real it looked to me, but still retaining its link with a world of Fantasy. Nowadays I love and play Avon's Forests but that simple card from a lot of time ago will forever be in my mind when I read his name.

Your videos are making me pay a lot more attention to magic's art and artists. In fact, you just made me realize that John Avon is my favorite mtg artist just by listing what he's done. Mirage mountains are my favorite cards to play with still to this day because of those color contrasts and the sheer beauty of them. Clifftop Retreat and Explosive vegetation are also pieces that I've loved for a long time and never realized they were by John Avon. Why did I not pay attention? Of course it's the light..Anyways, keep up the good work!

Picking my favourite of John Avon was tough because I wanted to avoid seeming cliche about it, but looking through all of his cards again I have to admit, there's a reason the most popular of his works are as such. The Zendikar Lands sweep me up into them every time I see them, especially the Forest with its ethereal play of light from what seems to be a setting sun through the branches and leaves of the trees, highlighted by the lights of the town built into the sides of them.

I tend towards watching your videos that aren't focused on a single artist for some reason, but these are lovely! You haven't made artist videos in a while, from what I can tell they don't perform as well as the other videos, but if you do return to this series, I'd be very interested in watching one about Dominik Mayer or... any artist you feel passionate about! Seeing as your passion shines through these videos as the white light through John Avon's paintings.

John Avon is one of a few artists who I actively seek out basic lands for. He does really awesome work that turns the most mundane Magic cards into some of the most interesting. Basic Favorites: Plains - Invasion 331 Island - M11 235 (don't know if that's the set it originated in) Swamp - Zendikar 238 Mountain - Mirage (this is pre-numbering, but it's the red mountain way off in the distance that appears to be shrouded by a mist) Forest - Portal (again pre-numbering, but it's the one with the leaning tree near the center)

Watching this video reminded me of the power of the art in magic the gathering, it literally transports you into this new world and watching these worlds come to life is most important in the lands. The physical locations where things happen. What is considered beautiful, ominous, neutral and what is valued in each plane is represented in the basic lands. I would personally love for you to do a retrospect on basic lands throughout magic's history including some of the newer sets.

amazing video. I have a love/hate relationship with John Avon art. some if it sticks out like what you're talking about from the light and perspective... a lot of his earlier stuff (Anger, for example), including his full art unhinged lands, just don't bring any emotion to me. I respect John Avon a lot, but sometimes his art just doesn't sit well with me; other times, because of that developing style you spoke of, i don't even recognize a piece I like as his until I see his name. My personal preference (in case you were wondering on style) is Rebecca Guay actually. I really like her land cycles, especially in commander 2016. Her forests and plains capture all my imagination.

Fantastic work once again. Avon is a great guy and an amazing artist. My favorite piece(s) would have to be his Clifftop Retreat along with any of his forests and plains. Of course I have a special place in my heart for his unhinged pieces, but believe it or not I am not a fan of the unhinged island. Keep up these awesome videos man. I absolutely love the presentation and veneration you give to the unsung heroes of Magic. The artists are what breathe life into our silly little card game!

Its Avon for my Lands and Walker for my Permanents! 2 of the most fabled artist in MTG whom I collect works, of their works landed on my albums and seen less play since their works are worth to collecting rather than playing, it's not that the cards are bad but the artworks are really worth collecting. It's truly a masterpiece.
