I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

Thank you! After years of a struggling with an erratic swing I tried this on the range yesterday and, after a duff few shots to get the rust off, found my swing being much more consistent. One huge plus is the opportunity for feedback is simplified massively, making necessary adjustments much more straightforward and clearer because so many of the variables in my old swing are eliminated. Distance improved too, and slices non-existent in 100 shots. Even got some beautiful baby draws by the end of the session. Excited to put this into practice some more. And now also realise why my old man treasured his Ben Hogan tutorial books so much, time to get them off the shelf!

Soooo looking forward to getting out on the course to test out the difference your instruction has made to my game, because man I have never experienced such consistent straight line ball striking at the range. But may have to get a video to you on my driver, which does not have the consistency!
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 5 месяцев назад
Awesome!! I sincerely appreciate your validating remarks regarding the online school, and I'm thrilled to learn of your ball striking improvement!! 💪💪 It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o0xscMyN3v8.html Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver - which is quite normal early in the swing change process as a golfer gets used to applying the weight-forward concept to this club - it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the driver as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack (AoA). This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) while the hips execute the lateral slide action. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA. 2) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft of the driver is considerably longer than the other clubs and thus requires more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".) 3) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) This is just intended to give you some food for thought with regard to some possible issues. Of course I'll be glad to have a look at your driver swing if you wish to submit it for a swing analysis. Thanks again for your message and keep up the fabulous work! Tom

Hello Tom thank you again for a great video I'm always waiting for your next tip. Is there any chance you could do a video on your lateral dorsal muscle on the back swing. I've been told I turn my shoulders but don't turn my body fully do you have a tip on this. Thank you Steven England 🇬🇧
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
Glad you enjoyed it, Steven! It all begins with a proper setup in which we flare both feet out approximately 10-20 degrees with the knees similarly angled outward. This orientation provides for an unrestricted 45 degrees of tilted hip turn, at which point we only need to add another 45 degrees of shoulder turn for a full 90 degrees. The result is a centered, stress-free, flowing motion back and through, and a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing. How about enrolling in the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Additionally, you'll find all my short game content (putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play), diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and so much more there. Tom again I can’t thank you enough. On Saturday I golfed 18 using your method of madness 😊. I have always been in the high 80’s low 90’s. Went out and shot 80. Thanks for everything soon breaking 80 will be easy. The thing I must work on is driving because at the range it’s straight but on the course that stupid slice seems to creep up on me.

That's awesome, Kurt - congrats on your excellent round!! I'm very glad to learn of your improvement through my "method of madness"...😆 With regard to the driver, it’s essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. With the driver it is pretty easy to just roll your wrists over a little more at impact....or that is what it feels like. I get excited when I hit a long slice on the first few holes. I know it will only take a small wrist move to make it a straight bomb.

I appreciate the kind words and support, Ed! Try to externally rotate your trail arm fully so that your triceps muscle can be pressed against the side of your ribcage. Then take your normal grip with the trail hand. This added measure of connection should have your trail elbow pit pointing a little more outward than the lead arm. Hey Tom - been dabbling with your principles - can I ask that the feeling on downswing is pulling down on the chain (Sergio Garcia thoughts ) hands pulling straight down - I’ve been practising with a Gforce swing trainer and they discuss similar principles on downswing ?? Keep up the good work 😊
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
Hi Darren, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible because we're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. Having said that - yes, the pulling straight down feel to initiate the downswing is fine, and it is one that I do teach - (similar to this lesson on swing the handle: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jX3EdIhGxR8.html ) Have fun out there! This technique yields a characteristic sound at impact similar to a .38 calibre pistol shot. The ball does fly straight. Distance depends on timing, proper shaft selection, and the ball used. When I first made gunshot contact, I was hitting range balls at a driving range. Now, I'm going in for a ball fitting. Maybe, I'll update this later. Whatever. BTW, I added this vlog to my favorites.

Hi Tom, another great vid but can you clarify on one point regarding both elbows please. I tuck in the trail elbow with pit facing foward and find that naturally my lead elbow tends to point down the line. I've recently made more effort to set up with both elbow its facing forward which feels very different but seems to keep my lead arm straighter as well as better feel in bending my tail arm and seems to make the path feel better. Soe people say lead arm elbo should face down the line so am going to crash and burn with my preference.? Cheers..

@@SagutoGolf Hi Tom, thanks for all your feedback, good stuff. I've had odd rounds that went well but then I seem to deteriorate which in turn starts my terminateresqe swing which is way too fast. (and tends to get me back swinging over the top.) it's driven me crazy for months and I've been following many of your tips but still not getting the down stroke right. Then it suddenly clicked after watching many hh players - I have been so concerned about my backswing that my back tightens up and my final swing line is one dimensional, and I just dig the ball out but can't finish. Anyway I've realised that my own feeling of the downswing was totally wrong (one single arc like many hh golfers). I've realised that it's the final "turn" of the hips off the front leg that gets you forward in the follow through and stops me standing up or scooping. I watched so many vids on the golf swing but many concentrate on hitting ball then turf, but whilst I was using the "duffers arc" motion I was never going to manage to do that. (FYI - I think many of us hackers are so concerned in that backswing part that we contort and tighten up in the back too much, and that tension seems to stop us being able to turn our hips properly.?? A tight lower back + a trigger like slashing downswing was my norm and compounded so many problem's for me, but thanks to your input I'm turning a corner. 👍

Hey Tom, As a dominant right hander playing left handed golf I've had to work on improving my coordination on the left arm to improve this skill. Any suggestions? Thanks JR.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
Hi JR, It's an interesting scenario, but you're definitely not alone! Just ask Phil... Short of saying that you need to train your trail hand to hit - which I realize may be difficult - I would recommend you work on maintaining your connections and allowing the lower body to bring you into impact. This Hogan video may help to give you a visual in this regard: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iejRWhuB7y8.html. Also, even though this impact video lesson focuses on maintaining the angle between your trail arm and the club shaft, it may help you feel impact in a different way that prevents your dominant lead hand from getting out of control: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Fe2kQ44azJ4.html One of the keys in your situation is to not allow that strong arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over when you're trying to bust one - to jump ahead of the lower body and throw the entire downswing out of sequence, because if it does you're likely taking regular trips to Pull-Slice City. If you can train it instead to trail the lower body to the point where the shaft is parallel to the ground on the way down, then you should be in position to hit hard with the dominant hand as if it were a tennis backhand shot or throwing a frisbee. Finally, this is a members’ forum post by a student in my online school specific to this very issue: “I found a great tip in the Power Distance section. If you are a natural lefty that plays golf right-handed (or vice versa) this is a breakthrough! Retract your lead shoulder during the downswing as hard as you retract your trail shoulder in the backswing. You will be amazed the speed you generate! It is also a very natural motion." Tom PS: By the way, have you considered the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Additionally, you'll find all my short game content (putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play), diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and so much more there. Tom, is the shoulder and torso rotation straitening the right arm or is it a conscious straightening as you turn. I don’t think I got it right at the range today.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including a proper full wrist hinge - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Here are a couple of lessons in this regard: - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1FLm67Fn81M.html - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RfH96tUn6ls.html It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing. What is the best drill to work on this? Hitting balls with one arm? When I do it my clubface feels more open at the top maybe that's not really happening. Thanks
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
The one-armed drill may be a little bit of a challenge at first. If so, then grab your trail elbow with your lead hand to keep the elbow against your side, and then make little one handed swings doing that until you feel that the trail arm is ready for a solo mission. Then after you have really ingrained that trail arm motion go ahead and make some regular swings with that same feel, building up gradually from chips and pitches to half shots, 3/4, and then finally fully shots.

yes, that is key. we store power in the right arm at the top. but, crucially we store even more power in the start of the downswing, when the muscle in the left side of the right forearm is fully activated. this loads power into the clavicle and the back, in the hitting area. in the start of the downswing the arms continue to reduce separation. and, when the left side of the right forearm is fully activated it reduces separation. and, really the secret to the golf swing is a swing drill, much more so than it is a swing move. quite simply because the swing is a muscle. when you first go to the gym you might be able to do the exercises fairly naturally; but, you might not enjoy them so much. but, if you persevere the endorphins kick in, and you get hooked on the exercise. and, really that is the key to the golf swing. when you work the swing muscle; and, develop full strength and flexibility, in the left side of the right forearm, the endorphins kick in. you might not even be swinging with a club when you develop the swing muscle, to begin with; but, when you do, and the endorphins kick in, you are on the road to good golf. and, for me, the role of the swing coach is to turn on the endorphin tap. "Endophins make you happy".

This enables me to put my eyes on your swing and offer some very specific observations and corrective action plans if applicable. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on.
