The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann was originally published in 1924. I read an Everyman's Library Edition translated from the original German by John E. Woods.

I have a hard time understanding the passion readers have for this book... I hear a lot of positive opinions, but I don't have enough knowledge to capture the technical reasons why this is considered a great book. I simply felt it doesn't justify its length.

Thank you for your review of The Magic Mountain. It's a fantastic novel. As I understand it, the story is an allegory of Europe prior to The Great War. The Sanatorium's patients symbolize different social groups within Europe. They are all sick by degrees.

Just finished this ! I can see why so many people give up but I would recommend persistence as it has been a rewarding experience with lots to think about . The themes of faith , humanism , eroticism , death , time , pleasure and love are the bedrock of the book and I think it's best to read it almost as an exploration of these themes as conceived a century ago . If you're expecting a heartstopping plot you'll be disappointed .... For me , knowing WW1 was round the corner , hung over every scene ...I kept wanting to say " wake up , people " . On the down side the pages if philosophy left me cold ....at times I could have hurled it out the window ...

Thank you. After your presentation, I immediately bought the Everyman edition. The last novel I read by Thomas Mann was "Dr Faustus", which blew me away with its brilliance.

This is a book that I should be reading again. All those fantastic characters and debates in isolated environment... Well, Christmas holidays are coming so maybe I have time for this. Happy holidays anyways!

These days I am reading this book. I started reading it in Mar. 2022 now I am almost getting to it's end. It's a great book but pretty tough read though and you have simplified it with your video presentation.

The first week of coming January will mark 1 year since I bought this book(same edition as you) but for some reason or other I haven't even started it. Your video has inspired me to pick it up again. Maybe it'll be my new year's resolution to complete this one.

It’s a pretty big time commitment but well worth it if you enjoy a (very) beautifully written novel that can be read on multiple levels.

I just finished Norwegian Wood yesterday. Great story. I am going to read The Great Gatsby first and maybe the German version of MM or D in Venice. Btw, is Wood's version with French and translation into English subnotes? Murakami really knows how to sell music and books. Kafka on the Shore....

In the Woods version there are very, very small snippets of French untranslated. Whenever lengthy conversation happens in French, the text is rendered in italics but translated into English
