@TPF00T
@TPF00T Год назад
@@eylul7143 Your English is better than most native speakers so I hope you weren't offended. An aesthetic is a set of "rules" that can be used to classify a visual. For example, your living room can have a dark aesthetic, a bright aesthetic, or even a natural aesthetic. You can also use it as an adjective (eg. "Her hairstyle is aesthetically pleasing"), but notice how the word does not mean "beautiful" on its own. You are merely describing how you find the aesthetic that her hair is incorporating pleasing, and you therefore also find her hair pleasing to look at.
@TPF00T
@TPF00T Год назад
I forgot to mention that it doesn't only apply to visuals. Your original sentence is perfectly valid if you added one word: Her pronunciation is the most accurate and aesthetically pleasing I have ever heard. Personally, I would describe it as an elegant and pleasant manner of speaking.
@toodarktodwellin697
@toodarktodwellin697 9 месяцев назад
@@TPF00T well that definition of word is not proper. It refers to beautiful visual or sound e.t.c. Aesthetic is frequently used an adjective to describe beauty of sth. So just utilitizing it, for meaning sth is very beautiful would be enough. My friend has bought an aesthetic car! .

Hi Gill, you truly are a treasure and there is no one better on the RU-vid channel 😘❤️🙏. Reading is surely one of the greatest ways to improve your life in so many ways. There are NO DISADVANTAGES to reading! YOU WILL IMPROVE YOUR: depth of knowledge, creativity, vocabulary, writing skills, concentration levels, perspective of many subjects, discipline, personality, ability to learn and study, imagination and memory, ideas on many subjects, ability to lower stress levels, ability to pass on knowledge. So as you can see, reading is a a gift that keeps on giving! I mentioned that there are no disadvantages to reading, and some people might say that it takes up time (which is priceless). But when you look at all the POSITIVES, and remember that everything you learn about life takes time, so there are really no disadvantages!

Good choices, Gill, although 'Mrs Dalloway' is I think quite challenging because it's written in experimental 'stream of consciousness' style to show how Mrs Dalloway's mind constantly shifts from one thought to another. I'd also recommend Katherine Mansfield's short stories, which are brilliant and not too difficult.

I agree about Mrs Dalloway. I read innumerable books in English. Some of the very few I can't reach the end of are Virginia Woolf's. Even though her books aren't very long, she's too erratic. You can read several pages without anything of note happening, but hey, her characters sure think a lot. Lol. It gets boring. On the other hand Jane Austen's style can be a little more difficult to get into, but once you do her books are real page-turners!

Gill is such a delightful individual and her recommendations are fantastic reads. These books have been immortalized as classics for obvious reasons but when I re-read these works, I like to pair them up with similar types of books that not only compliment but also bring more depth to the themes and or subject matter. For example, I like to pair Moby Dick with Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea to enhance those feeling of longing, despair and frustration. Or attempt to get a better feel of the dystopian back drop of 1984 with the gritty social undertones and feel of Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby. Or to simply juxtapose Jane Eyre with a novel such as Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea to unequivocally seduce one's curiosity about perspective. Pairing, contrasting and comparing related works truly open up the many dimensions hidden within any one story.

Thank you for the wonderfull classes and also the recomendations of books. I've read Mrs Dalloaway twice last year. Such an original novel. But sometimes I've found it difficult to understand even in my native language - the portuguese - because sometimes it was impossible to identify who was the speaker of every dialogue.

Melville is a difficult to read even for a native speaker. Perhaps for a younger reader or one with less vocabulary, may I suggest Children Of Green Knowe? It has action, and interesting family characters. I didn't read it until college children's literature class and enjoyed it very much. No Sherlock Holmes? Thank you for your classes.

Moby-Dick is one of my favorite novels, but it is a difficult book (Garrison Keillor called it unreadable), so I'm surprised to see it recommended to those who are just learning English. Two points about it: 1) "Call me Ishmael" is an intriguing opening sentence, but the original readers of the novel had more reason to think so. They were more likely to know who the biblical Ishmael was. 2) To the owners of the Pequod, the purpose of the expedition was to hunt sperm whales for their oil, but to Captain Ahab, the purpose really was a vendetta on Moby Dick. "And that's what ye've shipped for, men!"
