Today we look at both a fountain pen and a mechanical pencil (or, lead holder, as some call it), both by Venvstas. Yes, they are expensive, but they are also unlike anything I've ever used before. Extremely light but still strong, the Designer 8 (the pencil) weighs only 10 grams, while a regular pencil weighs 5. While I have a hard time justifying the extreme price (it would cost almost $400 to get both of shipped and delivered to me in the US), I can't deny that I really enjoy them and am entranced by how they handle.

I have to make a correction, the pen they sent me is actually their "Carbon T" model, not the "Magna" as I incorrectly stated. This pen, the Carbon T, is priced at 149 Euros, not the 249 that I mentioned in the video. Sorry about that. The Magna has a built-in piston (instead of a piston-converter), which I assume drive up the price. I saw the word "piston" on their website and jumped to the wrong conclusion. Thank you to the few people who corrected me on this!

Please test the MAGNA as well, it would be awesome to hear your review! Feels that it is very easy to fidget with that piston (which is not protected) and press it making a huge mess everywhere

The "shell" is actually the case the flower of a magnolia tree is held in before it blooms. I grew up with a magnolia tree in my backyard and I loved feeling how fuzzy the flower cases were.

That- is absolutely amazing. I have never seen that before in my life. It's weird to think of how many times we see images and words in popular culture and art over the span of decades and yet still have never seen the thing in person. I am wishing you all a pink plumeria tree, which has no fur about it but smells heavenly. Or maybe I just walked by a magnolia tree numerous times and ignored it. That's possible too.

Thank you for doing your part! I also like to recycle by throwing my old lead-acid car batteries into the local lake. That as well as the CPF bulbs that stop working. The lead and the mercury from the bulbs helps detox the water! All the fish people eat out of this lake, and also all the 1000s of people who get drinking water from the lake should thank me. But they don’t know the favor I’m doing for them! When my kids swim in the water for a while they always come out with a fiery red rash all over. It’s awesome to see the detox happening right in front of you!

What you said about the price is interesting. I have expensive pens but I barely use them. I opened the box, draw or write a thing or two, and switch back to my old one. Is it because I'm afraid to break them? Not sure. It's more a "feel at ease" thing. Somehow a slightly used, damaged pen, is more appealing to me that a brand new one. Same thing goes with paper and books. I need some kind of dirt to feel free to create

Hi, I agree with you they start to be pricy instruments, but the fountain pen Peter reviewed is the Carbon-T which goes out at 149 Euros. These pens are completely handcrafted in Italy. To keep the price as low as possible we are trying to distribute them by ourselves, but still, we will try to make some more affordable collection working on simplifying the production method. Best

Not a unique sentiment at all. It's often codified in east asian cultures, where for example in Japan a traditional belief holds that tools and weapons have spirits living inside of them that respond to the care their owner puts into them (and can become vengeful or stubborn if neglected or mistreated), or in China calligraphers and painters would have a personal set of brushes they would get as apprentices and keep for their entire career, with the brushes taking on part of the character of the calligrapher or artist himself. Familiarity can definitely be more important than sheer quality.

It's quite a common thing (unfortunately) among _many_ people, and with many _things_ (not just art supplies). I heard one person (a RU-vidr) explain it as being the "too good to use" sort of mentality that was often taught to us by our parents (or older generations, in general). For eg. the same sort of mentality that the "best" china was never to be used, should instead always be stored on display in the hutch, and only used (if ever) on very, _very_ special occasions. That explanation made absolute sense to me, as that's very much how my family was (and still is). That person had explained that as part of the "argument" in favour of actually _using_ all our supplies, rather than hoarding them for a special day or occasion... and that we need to break ourselves free of that silly, senseless cycle of not using the nice things that we buy for ourselves. And as I'd heard _another_ RU-vidr once state: "We bought those supplies to use and _enjoy_ them... not to have them sold, still brand new, for 10 cents on the dollar in an estate sale after we die!" So true... amen to that, I say!!

Magnolias are cool. They evolved millions of years ago. They were around when dinosaurs were. They're older than bees so don't have nectar to attract them. Those nasty can collar things shouldn't exist at all. Lots of countries have banned them. Love the lines that pen puts down. Another great drawing. Couldn't help but think you were drawing something at least partially made of carbon fibre. Like some kind of cyborg torso smashed open to reveal the ribcage and synthetic innards. :D

Thank's a lot Peter. I like so much your spontaneous way of presenting things and your drawing style it's soo cool. Just one thing, the fountain pen model is the Carbon-T which is out at 149 Euros and mount a n.5 steel nib. Price is not cheap, but, beside the material, there is a lot of manual work and Italian labor is very costly. I am glad you could appreciate that... and don't worry, they are made to last!

That's a beautiful pen! My senior project was focused on potential methods of recycling carbon fiber reinforced polymers so hopefully the cost of CF products will come down in the future.
@keevansixx4185
@keevansixx4185 4 года назад
interesting....does it involve a solvent that dissolves only the binding polymers without damaging/dissolving the carbon fiber tubules? I think the entire process could be helped/improved upon by pre-treating the carbon fibers with a protective coating that binds to the tubules prior to resin impregnation into it's final cast form. That way, when you apply the unbinding solvent, only the polymers are affected and not the carbon fibers themselves, thus allowing for the salvaging of the fibers to be recast into newer forms.
@NPTurtles
@NPTurtles 4 года назад
@@keevansixx4185 There were a few different approaches to this in my research. One was using a solvent (nitric acid iirc) to dissolve the epoxy without damaging the fibers. Microwave radiation pyrolysis was another promising method to break down the resin and leave the carbon intact. There are also more crude methods of shredding cured CFRPs which could be repurposed for fire resistant insulation or other things that don't require the strength of the aligned fibers but could benefit from the weight and thermal properties.
@TheGoobsters
@TheGoobsters Год назад
@@NPTurtles I'm sure you came across the term "chop toe" in your research, basically like particle wood board but made of carbon flakes instead. Carbon parts can still be quite strong even without precise fiber alignment simply due to the epoxy holding it together. Seems pretty viable to recycle it for such a use since there's no need to care about fiber continuity for chop toe layups. Take a carbon car hood mod for example, basically no loads on it, needs to be light, shred up some crashed bike frames and remold, bam case closed.

@venvstasitaly9452 4 года назад
Hi, they aren't so light, you can feel the weight of the stainless steel or lead free brass components. We are architects and we designed this instruments for ourselves because we need to draw and sketch. They are light weight, but very well balanced. The fountain pen is 13 gr which is an average weight and it does not feel as light as a plastic pen. We do not seek for unbearableness, we just try to produce the best design we can at the most affordable price. Best
@edzejandehaan9265

@@venvstasitaly9452 Ahum, to quote Ringo Starr, you realize I was not thát serious, ...? But sir because you are, carbon fiber is a gimmick material for a fountain pen, no way you will convince me that it enhances the functionality of the pen, and it certainly does not help to "balance" it. An object as small as a fountainpen does not significantly improve by the use of such a ridiculous strong and light material. It just drives up the prize making it a lot less affordable ( a term you brought into this) than strictly necessary. And don't get me wrong, nothing against fancy materials, for fancy expensive pens (I myself covet a tasty brass pen, for no other reason than, yum, cool looking hefty brass!). And carbon fiber certainly is a very cool material, and the pen looks great. As for quality, I take your word for it. Would I shell out the, what is it, 149 euros for it?. Nope, because, you know, it is not brass. And that is just a matter of taste. What was what I basically meant by my previous statement that seemed to have ticked you slightly off...

Not cause I want to be arrogant with you, but just to say that I am used to experience things, than talk... not the other way around, otherwise "you are saying nothing", as the song state. For instance, I am an architect, and, to be able to understand the work in site, I build up a house with my very hands, every morning, from 6 am to 4 pm for 2 years. (I own all those leads, the sharpener, and a draftsman version lead holder). But you made your drawing have such a metallic look somehow? I found myself wanting to jump into your drawing and hold onto the bar like sections and swing back and forth all the while gazing at the detail below my feet you had doodled so inticately. The Carbon T pen is indeed minimalist. Good nibs on the Venustas too. The founder is an archetect/instructor named Rossi. A good guy and he has a vision of writing instruments that's refreshing. Nice video Peter.

I love this draw-wing, and I love this pen and this pencil. Now I have a something else to pine and yearn and hanker for. In my family, we call expensive things one pines, yearns and hankers for "Pink Hats With Feathers", which means these writing/draw-wing instruments with the cool V within a V are pink hats with feathers. I will explain the origin of the phrase. My grandmother had her eldest son, my eldest Uncle, look after her finances after grandfather passed on. And she had an allowance, but every now and then she got something just because she wanted it so badly. In this particular case, she bought a pink hat with feathers. Her son did not understand it and complained about her purchase. "You didn't need this!" To which grandmother said, "But sometimes a lady needs a pink hat with feathers." All the men shook their head, not understanding. All the women nodded in perfect understanding. Someday...someday, if not these writing instruments, something perfect like them. Part of pink hats with feathers is the enjoyment of pining, yearning, and hankering for them for awhile.

yoooo the pencil shading on the drawing at the end looks awesome. I don't know if you do that a lot, this is the first time I've seen you do it, but it looks fantastic.

I use to love using that type of pencil back before I had nerve damage in my hand, only mine were from the early 50's and US made. They were originally my grandfathers and were referred to as engineers pencils (mostly because it was mostly engineers who used them). I still have them even if I can't use them, they are the only memento I have of my grandparents due to an aunt who decided I was leeching off my grandparents for five years (when they had asked me to take care of them) and cut me out of their will.

Nomenclature - Cap - Section (where you grip the pen, shortened from "grip section") - barrel (part that covers the converter/cartridge/holds the piston or sac) and sometimes a blind cap below that, a part that unscrews separately below the barrel, often to give access to a piston or plunger. The top of the cap, often where a little piece of ornament is, is called the finial. The nib sits atop the feed, which feeds ink. I have one of the very early carbon T models, and while the fit and finish is a lot rougher, it is still very good. I love Lucio's designs because they remind me of a pen that someone in a sci fi universe would use, like an actual prop in a film, instead of just some derpy chewbacca themed $300 cross that has hair textured into the body. I didn't really know much about the Designer 8, I didn't know it was an actual clutch mechanism 2mm lead holder that also fit a staedler rotary sharpener! Fuckin' ordering one right now.

Thanks a lot! First time I saw Lucio's brass model I thought it could come out from the set of Gattaca... and watch out grinding cause, from some images Peter posted on insta, it seams he scratched the pencil carbon body as well... Best regards

Whenever I find one of those six way turtle collars, I cut apart every loop so that if ever it winds up in a landfill or the ocean, it won't strangle any birds, animals or fish.

With a pensive gaze? Overwhelmed yet strangely calm? Entrepantly romantic in a stunned yet contented sort of way? Oh wow you're right.... one could most certainly write a novella on how he looks at his pen. And it would be a saga. A saga of love and yet frustrated yearning of potential yet to be fulfilled thus leading to a melancholic angst that is periodically overshadowed by pure evanescent bliss. I'm seeing noir.......

I also get that sensation in my ear, I assumed it was just another facet of my tinnitus. It usually fades away after a few seconds. Also, I also would think the feel of vine charcoal would be cringy. One of the reasons I don't use charcoal or pastel even though I can get a good result is because I don't like the way the powder residue feels on my hands. It's dry and weird.
