Today we're looking at the Venvstas Magna, ( www.venvstas.com/magna ) a daring and different pen, forged out of carbon fiber and stainless steel. This was very exciting to me, and I was looking forward to it. I'm always happy to see pens that are a step away from the norm, an attempt to throw off the status quo, or just anything that isn't the same cookie cutter pens rolling off the production line. I'd had good experiences with previous instruments by this company, but unfortunately I had a series of mishaps with this pen that soured my experience. On top of that, it felt bloated and less refined than its smaller (and cheaper) cousin, the "Carbon T", another carbon fiber pen offered by Venvstas. Anyways, I like what Venvstas are doing for what you might call the "Designer Pen" niche, but maybe there are still some wrinkles to iron out in this design.

Hi everybody, probably it was a vacuum created between the carbon and the feed section when loading, the pen has to be loaded as the user's manual says. In any case, we really put a lot of effort on what we make so if there's any problem we change the items, no question about it, the pen has guarantee, we'll have soon also a cartridge version for this one. The Carbon T is was specifically designed for drawing. That's why Peter likes it better.

Platinum Carbon Ink is more prone to clogging fountain pens because it is a pigment ink, meaning the blackness comes from black particles of pigment in the ink, rather than a dye ink. If you keep a pen filled with Carbon Black in use and don't let it dry out, and clean it regularly (say, every two weeks or every month, even if it has been working well), then it really shouldn't be a problem. Incidentally, I got your Line Almanac Volume 2 in the mail today! I now have Volumes 1 and 2! Your books are all on my wish list on Amazon.
@Philtho
@Philtho 3 года назад
Yep. I use Platinum Carbon in all my pens. My Rotring isographs, fountains, etc. If I find I am not using a pen, or I become attached to a particular pen and know I'll be using it/them exclusively I'll empty the others out, clean them, and shelve them. Letting any waterproof ink (pigment, india, etc) sit in a pen for more than a week unused is generally a bad idea. Just wash it out and save your pens from gunky deth.

This review reinforces the long-standing cliché that Italian pens are all gorgeosity outside and basically unreliable inside. Luckily they are also sufficiently expensive that I personally am never tempted. The design of this pen appeals to me, but I'm never going to spend over $100 for any pen, so I just watch entertaining reviews of it like this one. I'm on Team Pilot Petit1 and proud of it! You are right, Waterman ink is completely safe for everything. Any problems had are NOT because of this ink.

Hello Peter. Thank you for the honest review. I hope they replace your pen with a non-leaking one. I am not sure they are obligated to since it is a freebie, but what an epic fail of a gift! And I enjoyed the plant tour, and your neighbor's cat. And you! You definitely gave it to the slump with your drawing, so go you!!! I will speak a bit about your plants....that one with the limp leaves needs water, maybe yo could sit the pot in a bowl of water until it stops looking limp and the leaves are back to not being curling. You have an interesting combination of succulents (which should be water infrequently) and others that need tending fairly often. Some also take sun (the succulents) while others will be happier if they do not get full sun. Oh, and give a support stake to the palm and make sure it is getting enough water, so it can hold itself up. I hope the cat will let you make friends with it. And I name animals (plush and living), and my personal car. The first one was a Ford Pinto hatchback, and I named it Spot. It was the sweetest car. The second car I owned, I did not name because it was mean.
@linden5165
@linden5165 3 года назад
Succulents can survive low watering but they do best being watered as often and as much as other plants. That said, they then grow more and require more maintenance.
@jeanblythe1595
@jeanblythe1595 3 года назад
@@linden5165 Long long ago, I lived in this place that had this epically old jade plant (which Peter has a smaller version of, the succulent with the rounded thick leaves). I was at the time an outdoor gardener/landscaper, but knew virtually nothing about indoor plants. So I was used to feeling the soil, and when it felt bone dry, I started watering it. Until the owner of the place asked me to please stop because I was causing it to rot. Sure enough, the leaves were looking wrinkled, so I was paws off with that plant from then on. It forgave me and recovered, and they watered it once a month. I had been watering it every 6 days!!! Bad Jean. Well-intentioned, but bad Jean. But you may be right, because I was *really* watering it, so if given a little bit only, maybe it would have been fine?

Looks like you create a vacuum when removing the outer barrel around the plunger and that sucks ink out. Similarly, it creates pressure when you put it back on. Hi Peter, Maybe it was over filled? When you put the cap on the cover of the plunger, since this created an air tight seal, it effectively pushed in the plunger with the air pressure. It probably wouldn't have "splushed" if the cap had been left off. I'm just guessing of course, though I do have several fountain pens myself, one that I have had for over forty years (side lever with a bladder). Dear Peter, I very much like your reviews cause you are objective and honest. I try to explain you what's the problem might be. Our fountains pens are made of pipes that slides one into the other, therefore you will always have micro cavity where the ink can flow and eventually leak out. This force the user to carefully fill up the ink as our videos shows. If you would have tryed to fill the Carbon-T directly from the bottle, you could have experienced the same issue. That said, we will push hard to upgrade our products every time. This is why we need your help and this is why I like your honest review... to make things better for our customer. Nevetheless, I am sure that if you look at our video you will learn how to fill the magna without any leaking problem. On the other hand, if that specific piece have some leaking problem we will replace it immediately as per our customer policy. A big hug!

That pen is really interesting, I wanna mess with it and see what the issue is. I suspect there's a kind of specific way to fill it, maybe the ink shouldn't touch the carbon fiber housing? That sounds pretty tricky, though. When you had the ink drops on the paper: I think when you put the back of the pen on (which is a tube), the cap was posted and sealed off the tube, and the pressure built up enough to push the plunger down a bit. I wonder if this is what some call an "advanced" pen? I don't know lol. Great video!

Also I reckon you meant 35 hours of work instead of 35 minutes going into each pen, lol 😆 You’re not obligated to give a positive review because the item was complimentary, but I notice most reviewers just let the givers know so there’s no room for hurt feelings just in case. Hi neighbor cat! Hi plants! More water for the plants, maybe re-pot your palm friend so it’s standing up again and up the water quantity. I’m no plant scientist, but I’ve gotten pretty ok at keeping my plant friends alive. I’ve found that most plants do ok even if I over-water them once, as long as I make it a habit to stick a fingertip into the soil to check if it’s still damp first before each watering. If it is I wait another day, just make checking them a part of your every day routine. Get to know them, talk to them, get a spray bottle and mist their leaves sometimes. Think of them as wise old oracles. Good luck! Happy drawing!

I had a similar experience with my venustas pen. I bought it like a personal gift for myself. Unfortunately, it is really difficult to get a clean ink recharge. Furthermore the back part of the pen lost its grip to the body of the pen, so it is now a moving part of it. I will write the Venvstas hopeing they can help me, replace the pen or giving some advice.

Peter i love the video but please... take better care of your plants! That hanging one is a pathos, and it needs a lot of water. Every few days water it enough so that the water drips out from the bottom, that way it gets through to all the roots. And those "ferns" are actually ivy and they also need water enough that it drips out the bottom! Wishing you and your plants the best of luck

The pen looks great, but not for $300 when ink leaks. I had cheap ones at school that did that just as well. Love your plants. That cat will become a regular in your videos.

Peter I think it has a seal leak on the "Plunger". Flush it out and refill it but don't fill it all the way.

Any chance capilary action drew ink up between the outer carbon fiber and inner stainless tubes while filling?

Hello Peter, I believe that you should be honest above all else. If the company sending you a product does not triple check it before sending it out, how can you be responsible for it being a lemon? I enjoy watching your videos simply because I believe that you are truly an original person who tells us how you are doing and what is going on with you. You are not a fake. I look forward to watching you create your art and present your videos with truth and inspirational acumen worthy of a person years your senior. Thank you for sharing your experience and I hope you have a lovely day.

Well you can find videos of Lamy’s production line and apparently there’s about 5 minutes of human labor in each of those

It's probably hand assembled, not handmade. $300 is insane for this 😅 You can buy 24 inches of pultruded linear carbon fiber tube for $8, 6 feet of stainless steel tube for $100 and fountain pen internals for $10. For $300 you could buy the materials to make ~24 pens. 24 pens would take 12 hours to complete and are being sold for $300 each, that's literally $600/hour 😂 Edit: 5 minutes of labour makes it $7,200/hour 🤣
