It was an encounter beyond my wildest dreams…
When three humpback whales decided to interact and play with us for an hour in the Pacific Ocean!
There was no one else in the water for miles around except my freediving buddy David and I. The whales appeared below us and we were super thrilled to see them, but I thought they were just passing by. However, they seemed intrigued and decided to play - turning around us, turning on themselves to show us their best pose, approaching us and gently pushing us away and immediately coming back, going up, going down, we had it all! They were turning and dancing, their movement gentle yet powerful. When they came closer, stretching out their arms as if asking for a hug or a hand shake, our eyes met, with mutual curiosity.
Time after time I thought they were saying goodbye, but they changed direction, elegantly, and came back to share a glide; meeting us at the surface for a breath and diving down together a few meters beneath.
Words describing this surreal experience still come at a struggle, and all the emotions brought by this encounter are vivid yet dreamy.
