In all seriousness, this is the type of music journalism that should be used as a case study: researched, cogently discussed, with gags and plenty of context, as well as an awareness of the audience. 220,000 subscribers can't be wrong. Plus there's a Roman Empire Alert. In case you go back to beating yourself up, please reread this comment. This is an outstanding video essay.
Megan Maroney is the most original woman in country today, yet dressing like Dolly a bit. Her voice is so natural and yet so controlled showing emotion in a very palatable way,. She sings as though she is having a conversation with you. So cool. Just what country needs. No trucks, back roads, red dirt, whisky or small towns. Interesting that she listened to Jackson Browne as his songs are like conversations as well and pretty deep. Go Megan
💯 percent! I loved "Tennessee Orange" immediately, listened to it a few times, and then started clicking down the rabbit hole. I was quickly struck by her originality. She is her own thing and it is AWESOME! Reminds me of Lainey Wilson in that way.
I loved the editing, Grady. The thumbnail, the footage you used, the font, the color-matching T-shirt, and above all, your review. Ten out of ten all around. 💙
Love Megan Moroney, she definitely has such an interesting voice and amazing stroytelling! Her luck with connections is pretty wild. Loved Tennessee Orange, Hair Salon, I am not Pretty, and Indifferent. Honestly, can't wait to see more from her, Lucky was a killer album, haven't had a chance to listen through the rest of the new LP.
This is the best video you’ve made in a while, dude. Not that I don’t enjoy all of your content because I absolutely do, but it feels like this is in the upper echelon of video essays on RU-vid. I’ve been a back row fan of Megan’s for years with TO and Lucky, but going to check out her discography now!
Every time I see her checking her pulse on the "Am I Okay" cover it feels so authentic because it is what I do when I get anxious. It's such a bizarre detail that if you've been there about it just JUMPS at you
In the spring of 2023 I suddenly started listening to country radio again after 25 years. The original reason was to see how much of Zach Bryan they were playing(my daughter turned me on to him), but also I was just curious. Immediately several songs really grabbed my attention, one of those was "Tennessee Orange". I really like how well written the song was, and loved the quality of Megan's voice, I knew she was going to be one to look for more. When "I'm Not Pretty" dropped I was doubly impressed, the quality of writing was even more impressive, and I got to hear even more of her voice, I also really like the George Harrison sounding slide guitar in it. To this point I had never seen a picture of Megan, I actually imagined her being a tall brunette with haunting eyes, but I knew I loved her voice and the quality of her lyrics. I was very surprised to finally see what she looked like, and also to see videos of her actually playing a guitar. At any rate, she and Lainey Wilson compete in my mind for the title of favorite current female country artist, and I can't wait to hear more!
i love megan so much!! she is an incredible writer, singer and performer. she's truly an amazing person and is so interactive with her fans💙 her entire discography is skipless!
This whole album is so good, even more than I expected! Sad songs for sad people is still toward the top of my list. Her branding work and social media presence is excellent, I think she appeals perfectly to both GenZ and Millennials
i actually found out about megan through your channel and spotify last year!! as a city girl who is new to country music its so insane to see my newestfav country artist grow so quickly i love it. lucky is such a good album and am i okay is also SOOO good!! i need to see her live like now!
I've never left a comment on a RU-vid before, so I hope I'm doing this right!! Thank you for a great video. Massive Megan Moroney fan, from Australia. My husband has recently taught me about not skipping ads as a way of supporting the fantastic work you've done. I sat through some painfully long ads to make sure you were financially compensated for the terrific research, editing and nuanced notes throughout. I appreciated the blue shirt! I have been learning about interpolation through your Instagram. Every time I hear 28th June it reminds me of The Fray's How to Save a Life, and wondered if this is interpolation? Thanks again, never doubt yourself! Also excited to see the mosaic now that the video is finished.
I forgot to say that every time I hear "Mama, I lied" (incredible song!) I always think of it as a reply to Tennessee Orange. In T.E. she sings "I met somebody...he don't make me cry" and then in Mama I lied she sings "Mama I lied, he ain't a good guy, he makes me cry sometimes out of the blue" - there's a few more comparisons between the two songs that always make me feel like its a sequel :)
I'm kind of a part-time country fan, so I'm not always up on what's good. I first heard about Megan when you put Lucky at #4 for last year. It's probably my favorite album of last year--it has no skips. I'm with you, I think she's the real deal. Am I Ok? is currently wearing out my spotify. Love your work. Thanks for what you do.
I've had her new album on repeat since I first listened to it. Indifferent is such a banger! I'm always wary of a great debut, because it can always be a dud, but when the second album is just as good if not (and likely) better, it's proving something real.
Please, consider doing a video/videos about other up-and-coming female country artists like Ashley Cooke, Julia Cole, Erin Kinsey, Callista Clark, Avery Anna, and Alana Springsteen.
For me, Megan captures a very specific way of thinking that I relate to a lot. I've been a casual fan for a few years with songs like Nothing Crazy and Tennessee Orange that embody a real experience of being early in love. But also, as someone going through a breakup, she writes so well about the internal thoughts of being heartbroken but moving on. Overall, I'd say she just gets it and is super relatable to young women. Her songs are also more in a similar vocal range to mine, which is a refreshing compared to many female singers.
Im sure im not in the majority for saying this, but i really appreciate all the taylor swift comparisons. Im glad i wasnt the only one who sees the parallel and it is how i explain megan moroney to my friends. Tbf im the only country music fan in my social group
Taylor and Kacey Musgraves are two of her biggest musical influences, as well as a little Miranda Lambert, so I’m sure she appreciates the comparisons as well. Her cover of The Black Dog by Taylor is amazing.
Another great artist I discovered through you! I didn’t get to really witness country Taylor Swift in real time and Megan feels like life offering me a similar experience. I’m obsessed with this record!! Also this video looks really great, premium Grady content. I just know you either loved and had fun editing this or hated it 😂
She’s been one of my favorite artists since you introduced me to Hair Salon. I love her writing style and her mix of confidence, melancholy, and humor. Definitely hear a ton of Swift influence in both writing and sound but it’s balanced with 90s country and many independent country artists. Not a big fan of the song Am I Okay because there’s some production choices I don’t like but the rest of the album is spot on!! Love Noah, 28th of June, and No Caller ID the most! Haven’t gotten the chance to see her yet but one day she needs to be her own headlining tour and I’ll be first in line!
Megan is fantastic. I was late to the Megan party but I listened to Lucky about 3 months ago and I’ve become a huge fangirl of her. Am I Okay? is probably one of my favorite albums this year from any artist or genre. She’s gonna become a superstar and I’m just glad I became a fan before AIO came out.
If Lucky was a strong 8/10 for me, and I’d say Am I Okay? is like a 9.5. In addition to there being no skips for me, I’d say about eight of the songs I love, five I really like and one I “only” like. Megan’s won me over, and I think this album is right there with Luke Combs’ “Fathers & Sons” as my favorite release of the year.
Everything about her new album is EXCELLENT. Absolutely love the direction she’s going in. Just as excited to see where her career takes her And I’m also glad she’s embraced that the boys are for her too
I fell in love with Megan Moroney's music through "Tennessee Orange" and "Hair Salon" after you talked about her in a video a few years ago. Now I'm so much looking forward to seeing her play live here in Germany in September. Oh, and the new album has some great songs on it. And I absolutely love her voice. Super sexy.
Thanks for this. I'm a gramma , & love her songs. I already knew about her. I think her music degree helped her & she has the IT FACTOR. I am a music lover , ALL genre's because Music Is Medicine . Music is a Wonderful Gift From God. ❤ ✌
Her interview with Alex Cooper was pretty decent. It showed her depth and emotional maturity. I have to admit I"m fairly new to her and will look forward to hearing more .
I can't think of another album that I have listened to as much as "Am I Okay", I've basically had it on repeat since the day it came out, and not skipping any songs, it is just that good.
When Pistol Made of Roses came out, I kept thinking she’s was a mix of Swift, Lambert & Musgraves, all of whom I loved the minute I heard them & have also loved their evolution throughout the years. I seriously can’t wait to see how Megan evolves & to hear more music from her in the future!
I saw Megan open for Jon Langston when she was in college (at the GA Theatre not the KD philanthropy event) and it’s so cool to see how big she’s gotten now and how great her music is!
She is fantastic!! I loved Pistol Made of Roses, I loved Lucky, and I love Am I Okay?. “Noah” and “Mama I Lied” hit me right in the heart, and Man on the Moon is such an awesome song, as well. She’s gonna go far in her career ❤️💚💙
I absolutely love her voice and personality. I'd love to hear her do a cover of Eternal Flame (Bangles) She's a total package and I hope she has continued success. ⚘️🥂
Great Study into Megan, Grady! I totally thought she was going to be just a pretty face when she first released music, but she is amazing! I love her voice and songs. This new album is great!
Thank you for making this! I think Megan is sooooo good! Noah from the new album is such a perfect song to me! I saw her live here in the UK and am meant to be seeing her again in September! She really deserves success!
I’ve followed her since the pistol of roses and I’ve loved watching her get huge fame. “I hope your happy” on her new album may be one of my favorite songs of the year.
I had never heard of her until last August when she played at the Opry. Her duet of "Angel From Montgomery" with Jamey Johnson was easily the best live performance of anything I've ever seen.
Been a fan of her since Wonder came out. It’s still my favorite song to this day by her but I’ve gotten the chance to see her perform 3 times and met her twice at her shows. Just met her this past Saturday when I saw her in LA when she opened for Kenny Chesney and damn it’s really crazy seeing how big she’s gotten. Even as a guy I can say her music hits hard, I just listen to it from a guys pov 😂
Love love love this. Seriously, this and the Lainey breakdown are two of my favorite videos you’ve made. It’s so interesting to see how an artist got where they are.
Liked hair salon and Tennessee orange a bit but didn’t expect to be a big fan of her at the end of the day. Her Lucky album blew away my expectations. Haven’t listened to this one yet but excited too, I’m definitely a fan and believer in her talent
Only just found your channel and subscribed straight away! this is definetly the content I like. Looking forward to seeing Megan in the U.K. in September
I absolutely love Megan Moroney. I can't thank you enough Grady for introducing me to her back in 2022 when you did! I think Hair Salon still remains my favourite song of hers, so good
As a mainstream listener I am enjoying the era of Megan, Kelsea and Lainey on the radio! The song am I okay has been on repeat this week. Kinda of funny that chase rice helped give her a start. I wonder if Kristen Bush will go more of a producer role for other artists as well.
Loving her with every new album! Man on the moon and no caller id are def my favorite. Also thank you Grady for a new video! I find myself referencing your videos all the time in conversation.
Totally agree with you, Grady. I think the Taylor/Megan comparisons are inevitable, especially with the songwriting prowess of both artists. The line “If I had to lose my whole WORLD, at least it was to Miss UNIVERSE” is genius, in my opinion.
I was a huge Megan fan when Hair Salon and the Pistol Made of Roses EP came out, and I felt so cool because it was the first time I was into someone under the radar, but lo and behold, that didn't last 😂. I guess I'm just good at finding hits lol
I can't believe you didn't mention two of her best songs. 😅 "Why Johnny" is such an amazing imaginary conversation with June Carter, I just love the whole idea of it! And "Sleep on my side" feels like a revenge song, which actually is kind of satisfying in a strange way. 😅 I read that Megan said she couldn't tell who "Sleep on my side" was about, because then she'd also have to say who "Tennessee Orange" was about. Hmm.. 🤔 I guess he did make her cry after all. But she stands up tall and writes another song about him. And with that song added to the story, no one can tell me that doesn't sound like Morgan. 🤭 Megan is 👌! Love her.
