Great video! We visited both Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald in 2019. I agree with you that Mittenwald is a tad better. I think that your videos are truly the best on RU-vid. So much great info for each place and it's not just the typical tourist cities.
If we're talking about the Karwendelspitze in Mittenwald, that's this one! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gj6ci-OsEDw.html Thanks for watching! :)
A good way to spend the day in the area is to take a bus from the Bahnhof to Ferchensee. Hike around the lake and head back to the Lautersee. There are a couple of places to have lunch, then hike back down to Mittenwald (it's also possible to ride back to Mittenwald from here on the bus that brought you up). Be sure to have a trail map and enjoy lots of mountain and lake views.
If you had to stay in one town in the Bavarian alps would it be mittenwald ? We want to go September time looking beautiful scenery nice hikes and some restaurants and bars
That's such a difficult question! Maybe Mittenwald, but I think Garkisch-Partenkirchen is better connected. Also, you're not going to get a huge selection of bars and restaurants outside of Munich. Probably one or two in these small towns.
Well done video as always and with such engaging narration. You hardly mention Partenkirchen. Have you not walked Ludwigstrasse in Partenkirchen? It is by far the most compellingly colorful and evocative street of the whole Garmisch Partenkirchen área in my view. I've always stayed at the Fraundorfer on Ludwigstrasse. Wonderful walking street, beautifully Bavarian. I much prefer Partenkirchen to Garmisch. Partenkirchen has a much stronger sense of tradition and sense of place.
Thanks so much! I completely agree. I always get the sense that Partenkirchen is a quiet and cute town. I appreciate that its existence isn't solely catered to tourism like Garmisch. For the sake of brevity and clarity in the comparison, we sort of condensed the two town centers seeing as the video is already quite long compared to our others. However, we covered the 2 town centers of Garmisch and Partenkirchen a little at the very end of the Zugspitze video from way back. Hopefully, we did Partenkirchen more justice there!
One of the things I see missing is the Dammkartunnel at the top on the Karwendelbahn. This takes you to the Austrian side and has wonderful views toward Schnartz in Austria. It is not well signed at the top but well worth the effort. Awesome overall video and brings back many memories.
Seeing you live there, probably not an issue for either of you, but do you see tourists from the US or England (or other English only speakers) struggle in these smaller towns like Mittenwald or Garmisch with any language barriers? Thank you for all the great content!! Heading to Munich in May of '23 and really looking forward to a day trip outside of the city.
No, the English level in Mittenwald and Garmisch is really excellent! These really aren‘t tiny villages. They‘re rather large towns used to accommodating tourists. The only issue you might run into is communicating with taxi drivers in the area.
Thank you very much for all the wonderful videos. My husband and I will be in Munich for two weeks in August. I made lots of notes from your recommendations. Keep up the good work.
I took note of your sweet REI hat - when you visit Washington state you'll have to rate our Bavarian town of Leavenworth on the Garmisch/Mittenwald scale. Don't miss the Enchantments hike!
Leavenworth is completely fake, local tourist building code drives the look of the buildings, no Bavarian immigrant heritage. It's still great fun to visit, good food and beer, and of course a hub for excellent mountain hiking and rock climbing. This old promo video they did catches the spirit of the place (and my friend in Munich, I'm not sure took it in good humor.) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-unQz4kFJ2Tg.html And yes if you are strong enough to do the Enchantments in a day (hard to win lottery for camping) it is one of the most amazing places I've ever been.
i have a window to visit mittenwald but its on a sunday. Should i still do it? will the whole town be dead? thanks and enjoying your videos so so much in my plan to visit Bavaria!
Entirely up to you. I go to these towns on Sundays all the time because I just don’t have much other opportunity. The cafes will still be open, and of course the hiking and etc is always an option but if your goal is to shop, Mittenwald doesn’t have very much anyway, then it wouldn’t be great. So entirely depends on what you want to accomplish, but if the weather is good I’d personally do it.
I suppose if you ski it's about the skiing shop it's about the shopping hike etc . In the summer Mittenwald looks great for a scenic train ride for some ice cream off the beaten path. Enjoyed the video. PS getting there is half the battle at some point you just have to sit down and relax and enjoy being there.
Thanks for the great video! I really loved the smaller, cozier feeling of Mittenwald. The canals running through the streets are really nice, and the flowers everywhere were beautiful. I'm excited to see your video about the Karwendalbahn.
Robert Foster Strange that the second comment, the one about Mittenwald, canals, etc. has my name on it but is not my comment. A glitch? Or the 2nd commenter is also named Robert Foster? Which would be bizarrely coincidental.
Near From Home Regardless, when considering the relative merits of Garmisch, Partenkirchen, and Mittenwald, it's an embarrassment of riches. You can't go wrong.
Are there any buses from Mittenwald to Garmisch, as I tried to find trains on DB but it's difficult to find out. Can you suggest where to go from Munich for 1 week. Thanks
The train from Munich to GP and then to Mittenwald is currently down. The replacement line currently involves 2 buses and two trains. I wouldn’t recommend that for a day trip or base as long as the line is down. GP is a great base of operation!
Thanks for the video. If you have time, do visit North Rhine-Westphalia, it is one of the beautiful places in Germany to visit. For example Aachen, Monschau, Nationalpark Eifel, Bonn and Koln..and a lot :)
We hope to see more than just Bavaria in the coming years. We did visit Köln and Düsseldorf a few years ago, but sadly this was long before we started making videos.
i have lived in that society i know how nice good with heart Germany Austria swiss areas are, not all of eu but these areas are very good.. not even usa as of now total in mess chaos mismangment.
Love your videos, would appreciate if you show how to reach different places in town from Google maps, if short cut or tough to find for example i had a tough experience finding Eibsee after i got over at Zugspitze Bahnhof, i didn't knew i had to take a different train from there 😂 Anyways, i really like these videos as i am knowing new places and tips to travel ☺️
