Come with me on my third and final 'shakedown' trip in preparation for the Larapinta trail in less than 3 weeks.
The hike ends up being the wrong one for me so close to doing the 230km Larapinta trail, but I get to experience the sheer wonder and beauty of the high country and end up immersing myself in its splendour and living history.
I also test some new equipment including water sterilisation tablets, which I've never used before, my solar charger and the Tyvek ground sheet that I made for my Hyperlite Mountain Gear Mid1 tent (see separated "Short" on that).
So, with the third and final 'shakedown' done and dusted, I am ready for the Larapinta, so see you in Alice Springs next time!
Enjoy!

@@AlexsAustralianAdventures yes thanks Alex. Just finished my first week back at work but it was a very quiet week so I only worked 4.5hrs on Monday and 3.5hrs/day for the rest of the week. So... Not much money earned. 🫤

Great video Alex. Spectacular country but makes for difficult walking. I nearly broke an ankle hiking on similar ground near Guy’s Hut a couple years ago. Good decision to turn back before Larapinta. Very much looking forward to following your Larapinta journey,

Thanks for watching. It was spectacular and I can’t wait to go back to be honest. I am looking forward to getting more experience and familiarity with that area.

Another nice video Alex, what a beautiful part of the country & what a great place to prepare for your Larapinta Hike. We will be heading to that same area in a couple of months time for a snow adventure if all goes to plan.

Excellent. I look forward to seeing the video! In the snow would be amazing but really hard if you go off tracking

It's a new experience up there for sure. Those treeless expanses are amazing and you can see forever. They look easy but it's a fight every step and you have to experience it to understand. Even harder on the legs with snow everywhere apparently but I have not ventured up there in winter. The stars are beyond words, makes all the trudging worth it for sure. Next stop NT 🙂✌🏻

My goodness, it would be a nightmare with snow on it. I'll definitely leave that for another time! Thanks for watching.

Thank you. Being a sold hiker, I think you need to be attuned to your abilities and state of mind.

Thanks for watching. I am keen to go back and tackle it again. Not sure I am up for snow hiking, so it will need to be after winter. I wasn’t aware of your comments being deleted - obviously I can see this one

@@AlexsAustralianAdventures 😅obviously. I had a notification from youtube saying there was a problem with comments showing on videos, so a known issue apparently

Such stunning country! Love the high country, as long as the weather isn’t too brutal! How was the weight of the pack? Think you will try to lighten things up for the Larapinta? Anything you think you will take out or add following your load out video a little while back? How are you feeling about tackling the Larapinta now?
@AlexsAustralianAdventures

Pack weight was higher than it needed to be but I was deliberately carrying more to get accustomed to the highest weight I’ll carry on the Larapinta, which will be when I leave Standley Chasm. I’ll be carrying 5 days of food (about 4.5kg) plus 2 days of water (probably 6 litres) as I will be staying on Brinkley Bluff. Altogether that will be about 20kg. It’s 10km from Standley Chasm to Brinkley Bluff and obviously uphill, so I have been training for that day. I will be going with the lighter gaiters and dropping some of the water filter equipment in preference for the sterilisation tablets and I am experimenting with lighter lunch options (corn thins vs tortilla wraps). The camera equipment and extra batteries add about 1kg, but needs must! I am feeling pretty good about Larapinta, although a little nervous. Apparently 38% of people pull out. I am determined to be one of the 62%!

Hi Alex. I recognise Kidmans Hut where you were laying out a ground sheet. I was up there recently and met another guy from Sydney who was also practising for the Larapinta. How were you filming your self while walking along. Yes the Snowy Plains would be different than many other places but its get damn scrubby higher up above Kidmans. Gee whizz I think I met you last April up the gorge from Kidmans! Was that correct? Greg Hutchison

Hello Greg, It was not me you met as that was the first time I have been in the high country. It was good training for the Larapinta ascents. Not so good for ankles and knees though. No harm done and I will certainly be hiking up there again. Amazing area.

By the way, I do a little of camera set ups and coming back to collect my camera when I film them on my GoPros. Makes the trip longer but I think the footage is a bit more interesting.
