I know you're not supposed to diagnose a person whom you haven't met, but the aspects about Crowley's personality that Mr. Lachman describes smacks of Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Viewing himself as exceptional and extraordinary with regard to about any subject (and we find that Narcissists are extremely good at some pursuits), Turning on charm when it suits him, Being cruel to others just as frequently, Never admitting being wrong despite all indications to the contrary, Expecting praise and worship, Never admitting defeat and quickly turns to blaming others for anything going wrong, Having little regard for the feelings of others, Placing himself first in every circumstance, and the list goes on.

I have an on-growing regard for G. Lachman. I love how he deals with just the heaviest of hitters. One thing that he must be brought back to discuss is the brilliance and dogged exacting dedication that A.Crowley did for Yoga, Magick and Kabbalah. His Magick thought is clean and solid...an unbelievable mind. He is my second in respect only to Eliphas Levi. Gary did a great lecture on Ouspensky which in part has me in a Gurdjieff immersion. Gary Lachman is” Akashic”.....as is “The Mishlove” :>

Crowley's doctor prescribed him heroin for his chest condition in 1920. It wasn't unusual in those times. This was the drug Crowley became addicted to not the drugs he used in his magical experiments. At the end of his life in Hastings it was heroin he was addicted to but his doctor stopped the prescription for it. You might find wikipaedia corrects some of this interview.

I confess I only watched part of this. When the conversation turned to Crowley's confession of being Satanic, I decided I don't want to let that into my subconscious, and quit watching. However, I watched enough that I feel it will be beneficial to share with you a theory I've worked out during the past couple of years: I've become convinced, that insanity as a disruption of rationality in world view, is always potentially contagious - and, that once transferred, it can adopt "masks" who details differ from the original infection. Nietschze was mentioned during this interview, and I believe he's an excellent case in point. After creating philosophical works which earned him a place in history, he went mad. Madness is frequently quite clever at contriving arguments distorting the nature of reality &/or its details. That's part of why it frequently succeeds in defeating the normal defenses of the mind. It's my contention, that this insanity which came to control him at the end of his life was present as a deterministic influence over the contents & reasonings of his philosophical works when he was younger. Nietschze seems to get the credit for contriving the idea of a "superman", as a superior instance or evolution of humanity. I believe that the superman concept was a central feature, product of his illness. As an avenue of transmission, others read his philosophies, whereupon they were infected. After infection, the illness adapted to the new host, mutating to blend in. I believe this is what happened to Aleister Crowley. Another instance I can point at, is Ayn Rand. In the cases of both Crowley & Rand, after infection, the madness unfolded like a zip file, and led to the compulsion to write out the details of how & why the superior being was exempt from the strictures of social conscience, and social responsibilities. This can be analogized as completion of a germination period, followed by release of spores. In the case of Ayn Rand, she became the primary apologist for the parasitic class - and via that avenue of transmission, the madness found its way into an entire generation of elites. I believe that as an unrecognized contagion, the descendants of the original madness are responsible for a large portion of the crises and abuses in today's world.

waxmysophic who were the original carriers of the strain you describe? Your synopsis could also be applied to the phenomenon of alcoholism.
@waxmysophic
@waxmysophic 4 года назад
@@jameskay3715 , there's no way of knowing where these infection/infestations began. There are several possible models to explain such malfunctions, and at the current time there's no way of knowing which model is true in which case. I believe that's something psychiatrists will still be grappling with 200 years from now, IF we survive that long. One model contends that the malfunctions are of a nature similar to Archons, and undergo evolution while within a host. Within that model, the Archons originally began as minor neuroses, and evolved in place within the original host, possibly attaining malevolent sentience, before transferring "seed" infections into others. There are theories that the Archons can "jump" to a new host. Now, was Ayn Rand infested by an Archon? Or, Crowley? Or, Nietzche? Or, were these merely instances of severe O/C complex, finding fertile psychiatric soil for infecting others, within the zeitgeist of our times? No way to tell...
@waxmysophic
@waxmysophic 4 года назад
@@jameskay3715 : Yes. It's my opinion that from a shamanistic approach, the illness of alcoholism definitely IS a "demon" infesting the alcoholic. The demon isn't within the alcohol, per se - but, the alcohol is a phenomenological "doorway" through which the demon can enter the human; the creation of a weak point in the person's psychophysical defenses, which matches being vulnerable to the vibrational characteristics of the demon.

Dear viewers, if you watch this interview and disagree with anything I say, please remember that one of the few redeeming characteristics of Crowley's difficult personality was his sense of humour. He had one in spades. If you are a fan, a Thelemite, or simply like him to bits, keep this in mind. And if you feel an urge to emulate him, start there. Love, and do what thou wilt, as St. Augustine, Rabelais, and William Blake did long before the Beast got around to it.

Crowley's cruelty to others, including the fatal mistreatment of his own offspring, place him strictly off limits for me. Lachman cites historical notoriety as some measure of success, but in my view that is meaningless. He died broke, miserable, and alone, so one must ask: how strong, how good, how meaningful was his supposed "magic"?
@dba4292
@dba4292 5 лет назад
@@vootamu1 It should also be noted that Crowley often indulged in drugs that enhanced or created entities of his own imagination. That being said, let me offer you some pointers that may or may not be the bigger reality on what went on (it is always wise to think on the flip-side) A) Spirits (of good or bad intention) summoned by Mr. Crowley was a product of his own imagination and not visible to any one else at the Loch Ness that day. B) Housemaid left because of poor working conditions or personal related matters C) Workman had personal issues and finally lost touch with reality (happens every day, psych wards fill up, so do depression clinics) D) Local butcher had an accident The way I see it Crowley was a mad-man, nothing more nothing less. If drugs did it, or a difficult upbringing did it is neither here nor there. I do not deny that spirits are possible and that there is more to our reality than meets the eye, actually, I know there are more than what meets the eye. I also know a self-proclaimed satanist when I see one, and I have yet to meet one that is somewhat normal. The British class system was highly stratified at the time of Crowley’s life. He was from lower middle class stock and therefore no amount of money would’ve bought him the title of gentleman. I think partly this informed his personal philosophy; held back by societal forces, no matter how brilliant or willfull
@AtticusStount
@AtticusStount 4 года назад
It remains stratified, though the general prosperity that the upper working class down to underclass enjoy, they forget that there are members of other social strata whose circles would not converge. The middle and upper middle class are not only more sound economically, they're psychologically primed for a better life. The working class, whose outlook and long-term plan for the future is non existent have become the majority, and as sad as it is to think about, you need look at WWI to see how we solved that problem before.

I, actually, have a much simpler take on Crowley, Blavatsky and people like them. I think, their spiritual gifts largely came from their severe mental disturbance. Mental illness and the gift of spiritual vision often come together, because mental illness often makes the veil separating the linear and the non-linear sides of reality very thin. That's why those people are able to perceive what others can't. This is not necessarily a "psychic" ability, though it could be that as well. This is a spiritual vision that can perceive the big archetypal life themes, which is very different from psychic visions that have to do with very specific situations.
@GaryLachman
@GaryLachman 5 лет назад
So everyone I write about had "severe mental disturbance"? Does that include Jung? I mention him because you speak of "big archetypal themes." We know Jung underwent a "creative illness," as did Swedenborg, Steiner, Blavatsky and quite a few others. But this isn't the same as saying that someone's "spiritual gifts largely came from their severe mental disturbance." That kind of gift is rather a white elephant. While all of these people certainly went through profound crises, to say that their spiritual insights were really little more than evidence of mental imbalance seems rather limited.

So if we put all of the facts together, we have a man, Aleister Crowley, who inherits a lot of money and decides to align himself with demons, but messes that up, big time because he can't stick to a six month ritual-then AC decides to be a sexual predator / pervert and a heroin fiend, manipulating anyone he can for his own selfish pleasures and perversions. Here we are decades later writing books about him and making movies. I always enjoy the discussions with Gary Lachman, but I still don't understand much about Aleister Crowley. What did he think it meant to cross over to the "other side"? Apparently he didn't think of himself as doing evil, but what did he think he was doing? What was he trying to show/prove? How did the members of the Order of the Golden Dawn think of "magic" and how was that different from Crowley's approach? Basic questions such as those weren't broached in this interview, leaving the uninitiated, myself at least, confused.

And, whatever our answer to that question, what does that reveal about our beliefs and prejudices? Personally, I’m a fairly libertine spirit, but I think anyone would be hard pressed to justify things like letting your fellow mountaineers perish. There’s being liberated and then there’s being a callous, sadistic narcissist-Crowley probably oscillated somewhere in between.

This is a skewed interview that overdoes Crowley's sensationalism while not even touching upon the Book of Law. Lachman cannot even name the magickal grades of the Tree of Life off the top of his head. It's not bad, just very stereotypical.

He didn't want to attempt a rescue for the dissenting party on that expedition, because it would have endangered himself and the rest of the group. Sacrificing oneself for the stupidity and blunders of others was against the core of his philosophy. Can't say I disagree with Crowley even in that regard, but those who wear Christianity on their sleeve would probably find issue with that. Christians value the notion of self-sacrifice to an unhealthy extreme lol. Sex, Drugs, Poetry & Music are an ancient magical formula. Crowley just brought it to light in the modern era. Why just talk about his heroin and cocaine use or emphasize that? He was in fact a psychedelic pioneer who integrated the disciplines of magick and meditation with those altered states of consciousness. He was using hashish for yogic meditation and peyote solution for various visionary rituals.

That's one interpretation of "Every Man & Every Woman is a Star!", another is that, as he spelt MAGICK, with 6 letters not five the hexagram rather than the pentagram is indicated, & I would suggest further that it's a hexagram composed of the triangles of air & earth as the magician is in the astral above & the female is in the physical below, as symbolized by "Love is the Law, Love Under Will!", this is the principle of spagyrics in alchemy meaning separate & combine. Put another way "Let the Soul be Separated from the Body to Rise Upon the Planes & with Magickal Intent Fixed Firmly in Mind, Recombined!"

I was just at Boleskine House on Loch Ness.....I loved it there! People told me all these bad things about it and how bad/ creepy it feels....but I didn't feel anything bad there. I think those people are just bringing their own baggage with them and blaming it on that beautiful area. I see why Crowley headed the protest in the area to stop the loggers from clear cutting. The trees are the most wonderful trees in the UK. I did Crowley's "Star Ruby" ritual in the front yard which was a real treat....

I agree... not my cup of tea... either. Waay to much credit is given to him for sooo many things. He was good at creating compelling images, and promoting himself. Sure, if you want to create a believable maniacal, charming, magical manipulator for you book/movie... sure.... he serves as an effective template for that. Loving the naughty boy? I admire the naughty boy when you find out that the naughty boy is an actual compassionate person that gets into trouble for bucking authority structures that are unfairly restrictive. Inspiration for the 60's counter culture? Maybe the perverted failed version as shown by the Manson Family. I'm happy to have NEVER known him... I already know too many people that are just like him.... At my age, I've learned to recognize their personality traits and stay faaaar away. Great conversation anyway! I do greatly admire Gary Lachman. If it was anyone else doing the conversation about AC... I would have passed.
@pheresy1367

@Marc Bell .... I can imagine a hypothetical situation where I'm offered an opportunity to "explore the beautiful indigenous cultures of Hispaniola with our guide.... Christopher Columbus". That's exactly how I feel about Crowley. Like Columbus, he was a plunderer, everything (everyone) he touched turned to shit. Bold, adventurous, intelligent, and curious.... sure, but he was a "taker" and predator. This fact gets downplayed, as if it's an eccentric personality quirk that doesn't diminish his accomplishments. I question "his accomplishments". How can someone so blind as Crowley help anyone "see" ANYTHING. I'm sure if you were to sit in a room full of conquistadors, rapping about alll the marvelous places they've been.... I'm sure we'd be dazzled, hearing about the peoples they've enslaved, murdered and dismembered. They would assert (with absolute confidence) their "understanding" about "how things work over there".... but to me, it's all suspect on account of their personal agendas, and blind cruelty. Crowley's story has become an artifact of history, way overblown in importance (IMHO). To me, he occupies a similar slot as L.R. Hubbard, or Anton Lavey (but way less exalted) ;-).

Within, the modern Rose Crucian societies Around the Globe he was definitely considered A “Pioneer” but A character with A larger then life Ego that made him stray definitely from the path to liberate ones ‘True Self’ He served his Ego Self, stimulated by the adorations of many ‘Seekers’ that where impressed by his Self-Believe, Whe have seen many examples where this went horribly wrong; Manson, Moon, Koresh and even the seekers around Bhagwan, Power corrupts, Crowley moved in elite power circles, Secret service etc. Of course such A figure would inspire upstart adolescents seeking for A meaning of live sadly damaging fellow brothers and sisters that take these corrupted/disturbed figures as role models.....I know Pioneers need to swim against the stream, I was A Youth Singer in A Punkband turned my path around into A student into A Rosy-crucian school and broke Away long ago from this ‘elitist’ because I believe Live is the school Itself! Actually the founder of the schools first book stated “Do not follow Me” (In the Spirit of Jiddu Krishnamurti ) It took me 15 years to go on my own path. At least I did learn valuable lessons on the “Universal knowledge” and did not encounter Darkness in this movement, but couldn’t bare the sheepish behavior following deceased Grandmasters....Is It right that such A perverted, twisted legacy by A self-destructive figure is the inspiration to our world? I think It is pure Darkness once You use hidden knowledge for Your own purpose, Manipulating novices into sex or satanic rituals Like Crowley and so many others did in the name of Spiritualdevelopment! Sadly these practices are A problem in the power circles of Hollywood, Music industry, Fashion, Finance and Politics!
