Wildlife photographer and "Sunday Morning" contributor Joel Sartore takes us to Nebraska's Platte River for a first-hand look at one of nature's great wonders: the mass migration of the magnificent sandhill cranes.
would have liked to see the sounds and visuals of them flying overhead Having seen (and heard them coming) in the Sierra foothills one day I was looking to listen that again
Unfortunately, they are hunted here in Texas. Every November I go on a solo trip due west on the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River just to see these beautiful birds as they settle in. I can typically make it about 7 or 8 miles upriver to set up camp for a few days. Pure solitude; very seldom do I see another person during the 3-5 days there. No gunshots, no ATVs, no drunken campfire socials. Just me and God, the nighttime coyote song, the morning mule and evening whitetail deer, and the cranes. There’s nothing else like it. Pure Southern Great Plains slowly transitioning into the notorious Llano Estacado. It’s a special thing, hearing these magnificent birds as they fly overhead or land near you.. if you’re lucky enough. Sedge after sedge for about two weeks straight in mid-November.
I am in the process of transporting a sandhill crane to a wildlife rescue, he was stranded at a chic Fila here in Georgia for a week with a broken wing. Hopefully he will have A happy ending!
There are only 9 states that have any legal crane hunting. Nebraska is the only state in the main migration path that does not allow it. Trust me, those of us in northern Indiana would appreciate if they moved along faster lol. They are cool once or twice a year, but they get annoying really fast when it's all you hear all day everyday. I think people underestimate just how loud they are. But, they are cool.
Bird watchers and hunters alike enjoy seeing cranes...however its the hunters that spend millions on crane permits, stamps, liscenses, etc that go to ensure that cranes will be here for future generations.
