Great review. Just one thing. Will doesn't face Stagnate himself, just an "Echo" of him. Not even that. It is half an echo of a God. To put it into perspective, an echo of a God would be 1/100.000 of a god's power, and a half echo like the ones Gus and Will are facing is half of that. Note that "Echo" Stagnate himself said that he split himself into 2 because Gus surprised him. And imagine that that is something that Gus, the wondering Sage was just barely able to face. If an actual Echo came to kill them seriously, well... As for the Gods, I believe that the Gods in this Isekai are more like DnD Gods or Greek/Roman Gods. They are the Gods of a certain aspect of life in general and are not "Good" or "Evil". They are Forces of nature and like Gus said before they are beyond the understanding of human morality and ethos. Their belief's and actions are just and accurate towards what they believe in. Example. Mater is the Goddess of the Earth and nurturing. She cares about every living thing and wants to protect everyone. That includes her priestess that had earned the nickname "Beloved Daughter " Mary. She still loves Mary and wants to protect her, but since Mary betrayed her and accepted a contract with Stagnate she cannot show her preferential treatment and allow her to continue to pray to her without consequences. Hence, she allows her to pray to her, but at the cost of pain through holy fire that won't kill her since she is under Stagnate's protection, but at the same time is punishment enough for her betrayal. The fact that she still cares for her despite her betrayal is the fact that she creates the bread Mary requests from her every day for Will.

It's very Dark Souls inspired, w/ how the opposite of darkness isn't necessarily light, but fire (which can include light) instead.

@@emerfirek Very true, the author did mention that they were very into D&D in the afterword of the first light novel, so I can see Dark Souls leading into an inspiration for the story telling. Especially on how focused they are about gods. One bit they cut from the previous episodes was how Gus described the creation story, he brought up the Creator and how the Words used by them made everything, even inadvertently good and evil, being the different gods. It makes me think of the story of Gwyn and his family in Dark Souls.

Honestly I agree with stagnate a bit. Instead of all ways dying and starting anew. Why can't we just change and keep our memories.

@@codelogic9018 nothing wrong with Stagnate’s thinking, it is enticing to not die, but what makes Stagnate a bad choice so to say is as his name implies, being stagnant. As a God of Undeath, his vision is basically keeping things still forever, there’s no growth or regression, just being still, like being preserved forever. The no death thing seems enticing, but if you’re stuck in the same spot forever it’s not really worth it.

He isnt officially God of Dead, actually. But of the Undeath and Undead. That's why he is opposed to change as you said therefore he is called Stagnate

@@nickvalentine7399 If It isn't a spoiler than It doesn't make sense, at least I don't get. He is against death and tragedy, that's why he makes people Immortal. Just cuz he commands the dead doesn't make him the God of Death. Why do you say he is/was the Go of Death? I think the anime itself stated somewhere on episode three or on the first that he really didn't like people dying and suffering, and he was the God of Undeath for that reason

She told her friend and the head priest but neither of those were really her choice as they themselves realized something was wrong She still hasn’t had to tell anyone of her own free will and hasn’t had to tell her family…or more accurately the family of the dead girl she’s now possessing. That would be a much harder conversation

@@justinbuergi9867 I still find it to be the best reveal I've seen tho (out of like 3😅). It was definitely interesting plot-wise to see Lutz figure out this wasn't "his Maine" over the course of the anime. Plus, it opens up potential conflict in the future, since the OG Maine is dead, and this Maine just replaced her. I'm very curious to see if the family finds out later, and what the high priest will do after learning about her reincarnation *next season.* (if we get one 😭) That was a significant reason why I consider it to be one of my top 10 isekais.

@@anonymouslyforgotten5592 no idea about family but I have heard that this revelation will change the way the high priest treats her….he was also trying to get his buddy to adopt her at the end of season 2 which could definitely lead to some problems. The merchants granddaughter seemed to say that once she was married off she couldn’t come back so Main would probably have to do the same and I really can’t see her abandoning her family. Yeah they aren’t her real family but she thinks of them as if they were and they still believe she is Them finding out the truth would also be…interesting. I mean she’s been Main for years now so she has actually been there daughter. If a few more years pass before the reveal, she might have spent more time as their daughter then their real daughter so I can’t imagine they’d be too mad. Heck. Maybe they already figured it out. She changed pretty dramatically over night. She can use magic to kill people and negotiate confidently against merchants. But yeah. The impact on the family is definitely a big issue and one of the reasons why so few isekai cover it. How do you tell your loved ones that you’re not who you think they are? There’s a lot of fear that you’ll be rejected or hated. Though I have seen a few series that did an interesting take on it. One manga had the reincarnated person share a body with the original soul and the family accepted her almost instantly as their second daughter.

It’s made clear that Stagnate is the god of I death but yeah I definitely agree that god of death is a more appropriate descriptor for Gracefeel.

@@turinmormegil7715 visually speaking the anime made Divine Torch look like smite undead (Will swing his sword and the undead turn to dust). while in the light novel he ... I just re-read that section of the light novel and saw that the anime was actually acquired to the light novel it just removed the second attack wave of undead. I guess was just confused because Divine Torch is described differently in bok 2 and 3.

@@juanraden It literally became a massive plot device for the story. Whatever conflict is coming, it definitely involves reincarnation.

The light novel has yet leave the continent of Southmark, once the center of Union Age before High King put an end to that. Southmark is also formerly where the majority of Gracefeel's worshippers are located, and that war scattered them.

Probably because he's the most educated among them, thus making him understand how big of a deal it is. Gracefeel used to have a large following prior to the war against the High King that ravaged that continent. And so, knowledge about what happens to souls after death was known (especially by those who were educated in magic and by all the people in the cult of Gracefeel). As in, that after death your soul reincarnates without memories (in a world, either the same or another). In other words, just from learning that Will remembered his previous life meant that it was the personal doing of Gracefeel herself (the Goddess of Light and Rebirth who oversees the flow of souls). Otherwise, it'd be impossible.
