The Making of a Real Backyard RC Track :: Part 2 of 2 

Awesome to get some input from someone who actually does this professionally! We found out the hard way about low spots. Before we put in a drain, the large turn around the tree would hold about 4 inches of water... But the red clay since then has slowly washed away, leaving dry natural dirt, it's a light brown now. When we resurface the track with a new layout, we're going to try using a plate compactor to try to give it a smoother surface and keep the dirt from washing away.

No it's not, a lot of people wonder the same thing. It's to help smooth out the track, the water makes the loose dirt on the top settle and pact in. It also increases traction for tires.

should have not used the blocks on the back side of the jumps. you could race the track backwards to change it up a little bit. still, looks good.

Thanks man! The original red clay we got from a guy was totally soaked when we were ready for a second load. We found another place that had covered bays, but only had regular clay, not red clay. So we just got it anyway. Soon we're planning to resurface the entire track with an inch of red clay!

What software did you use to design the RC track?

I mean you did your best but check out Trackside Hobbies and Raceway in Wisconsin online for inspiration (its my local track and Ive been driving RC since I was 5 and since im 15 now 10 years is a lot of experience) if you want help or tips just reply to me with questions

Not as much as you think. Other than cinder blocks, we would have had to use wood. The only time our cars get scratched is when we don't take the bank right ,and go to high on top of them. It's mainly the tires that hit it in that case.

The bobcat company was just a local guy in GA, I'm sure you could find someone to do the work for you. Try looking for bobcat work on craigslist, that's where we found our guy.

me and my uncle built one like this but the berms where made with trash bags...filled of trash there was a big berm was a couch cut in half and the jumps where made with telephone poles yes the track had an outer layer of dirt then clay and some sand to make it fun the back stretch was pavement

why dot you just make a simple track that you dug basically a really wide rut? ask your parents to help, or you could get that back pipe looking stuff (the name slips me at the moment) and make a track that you could change all the time, and make some wooden jumps or something along the lines of that? hope this helps :)

The jump where the Concrete blocks are around the side of it could be dangerous if some one is run of to either side, Instat stop with broken parts but other than that I love IT!! Is the house next door for sale I want to be your nieghbor and do some racing!!LOL

I'm not really sure were he got it, but we were looking for dirt and he said he had some. Try going to a landscaping place, that would have been our second option.

In the future if you change the track it would be cool to see the bank turns go very high so you could wall ride a bit higher

just curious, wouldn't that be tough getting all the leaves out of the way all the time? I know it's a seasonal thing but that would just make it ten times what it was if it was indoors.
