I was watching this and my wife was looking over my shoulder. She leaned down and whispered "no". I think she will hate my first floor carpet track more. 😅
Lol...I was fortunate to have the kids involved/active so it was an easy "yes" for me...but I hear ya brother. Might get a shot on a redo this year. It's going to be mostly astro.
Bro i was just watching a video of a guy in a 20 acre field he said it was his backyard ha got a damn Bobcat he was doing a dirbike track instead of RC🤣🤣
This video is what keeps me going whenever I start to burn out from gardening. It has been 200+ hours of work so far, mostly with hand tools, moving literal tons of gravel, dirt, and vegetation. But now that sweet backyard rc track is finally within reach 😄 Had a lot of time to think about the track layout, and I have decided to make a banked oval with a cross through the middle (like a figure 8 on top). Maybe a dirt ramp in the center. Anyway, great video and production quality 👍And thanks for the inspiration 🙂
For domestic tranquility, ease and because I bore really quickly of the same old layout, I have gotten better at "stealth" tracks. Back/front yard are about 1/2 acre each, flat packed rock/clay 1/2 grass. I visualize a track say oval, figure 8, kidney whatever works and then move feeders, obstacles. If needed use ready available objects/materials/various colored dirts to outline the course. Then using my big boy , a 1/6 UDR truck I drive the layout for days and burn it in. That with a rake, blower etc and soon enough you can "see" the track. I can get away with 1/10 scales with larger tires, clearance even 1/16 E Revos. Later as you "break in " the track. new lines open up, you see other possibilities. This is the next best thing to going all out and actually tearing up your lawn.
The jumps you made are great. I’m building a hybrid track for my sons ride on buggy but I want to also use RC on it as he grows older and we can have that hobby together. Thanks for the inspiration
Great video.. I wish my wife would let us till up a track. Grayson has a plan to run his go kart in the yard enough to wear the grass out to act like a track lol..
I built a crawler coarse. Dug the dirt, laid 2 layers of Thick ply weed fabric, then gravel on top. Weeds overtook it in less than 2 months. We have some crazy soil out here!
It is a lot of work to do one and to maintain it but it really is nice to stroll out in your backyard and turn some laps anytime you like! I agree working the layout to maintain a good lane width is key and both looks better but also makes it easier to drive! My only regret is the massive table top I made on mine as it got a little out of hand and it a pain in the rear to maintain! It also is going to be a nightmare to modify so I live with it! The small moveable jumps you did are a way better choice!
Thanks my friend and I agree on all counts. Don't get me wrong...I LOVE a good dirt jump...but running the lawn equipment over the dirt ramp on the old track lead to much failure...haha. Weeds are the big enemy for me (especially now that I don't use roundup anymore) and the most work for sure. All in all it's very much worth the time and would absolutely still have a track even if the channel went away. Best of times to just walk out back for a bash.
Very helpful! My wife let me build a small track behind my shed last year. The only issue is it's on a hill, and very few buggys can make it around. It's kinda turned into a crawler track lol.
What a great video! Makes me want to go make a track now, but probably would need to begin with negotiations with the wife first, ha ha! Lots of work for sure, and you managed to videotape it, much appreciated! Very inspiring!
Great build and very value tips. I'm not a fan of matts, but I hadn't expected that amount of dirt thats needed. I like the jump version with the landing table, too.
Great video fella, that has turned out awesome! 👌 Great detail and handy information for anyone looking at going down this route. Unfortunately my garden isn't large enough, but I am now inspired and currently looking for some land to build one on! 😊 👍 👍 👍
Thanks my friend. Even a small little plot can be super fun! Hopefully, some of these suggestions can be helpful to all that give it a go. Appreciate it as always bud.
Love you videos. You've got me thinking about building a track. I think Ill go with a sod cutter, maybe use the remnants for the borders. Thanks for the ideas!
Great video, Addam's Playground sent me over your way. I'm in process of building a back yard track thanks for the great video lots of good advice... Keep RIPPIN....
Nice build tutorial! I just finished building a similar size backyard track with just hand tools. Crab grass, thick hawaiian clay, and junk backfill for soil made it quite the endeavor. Tried to incorporate drainage features like rock filled trenches leading to dry well, but the clay will only handle so much water at a time. Survived the first big rain storm and quite happy with how it turned out. I used hollow blocks and rock as the foundation of the jumps/landings, but it does indeed require more dirt than you would think. In the end, it's very rewarding to rip your rc's around a prepped track in the convenience of your own home.
If I had to do it all over...drainage would be my 1st thought. Been thinking over some sort of drain for that corner section. Appreciate the view and nice comment. Good luck with your track and enjoy.
I have a spot already ear marked for a racetrack. Gonna try make it big enough for multiple scales. I know ive got the right sized area. But I'll map the track first. As its a dirt area, i dont have grass to worry about.
once my ground thaws, I'll be making my own track out back. Will be going for the 6 foot lanes since it'll only ever be like 2-3 racers (following your advice) and i really like the spray paint mark-out idea to help with the initial sketch of where to start working! I'll be going in with the tiller to chop up the sod and I'm prepared for a lot of raking :) Thank you for this video! The hype is real over here haha
That's awesome bud! It's a bit of work but the payout is HUGE! Appreciate the nice comment as well. Best advice I can give is to run a few cars together on the spray paint layout and make sure you like the flow before the dig. Good luck and let me know if I can help.
@@VINTAGEBACKYARDRC I watched your maintenance videos and ramp build, you've had a lot of great information for the back yard scale for me that will help get started this year, i appreciate the effort of you putting out videos on that stuff :D Any suggestion on the type of car to run on the grass track? Should I take out my fastest and blast it? I was thinking of tuning the track to my midnight pumpkin since it's about the mid range of capability of my "fleet"
@@gogotrololo Thank so much. I love being able to help in any way! The thing that's good(?)about a Pumpkin/Lunchbox is it will be good in the grass and they have a not so great turning radius. If you are planning a track with tight corners you will quickly run into the L/P's lack of cornering ability...lol. In stock forum I struggle getting one around my track for sure. So a more open layout works with those style of cars. Take the fast car out as well!
I love your RC channel I was wondering if you were going to ever do a team associated gold pan 3 gear on your track. I have seen the video when do all the RC tens but you never compared it with the tamia cars.thanks
Just curious, couldn't it work to mow it down low, lay plastic down for a couple weeks to kill off the surface, scrape a bit with a shovel, and save the tilling and rolling? I imagine the cars will tear up the vegetation, and some round up could address the rest that pops up again?
So weed control is probably the largest pain when dealing with a track. I would assume doing it this way would lead to vegetation up-shoots (over tearing it out completely) at a larger rate. Maybe with enough dirt it would work?
@@VINTAGEBACKYARDRC I'm thinking of putting some sand and then dirt - so vegetation wouldn't grow (at least as much), or possibly just some carpet would do
Great video. I'm currently trying to build my own track. I was tipped off about your channel by REIT Place. I'm glad he did because lord knows I need some tips and motivation 🤗 my backs killing me from the shovelling 😅 +1 sub from me, looking forward to seeing more while soaking my back ☺️
Ahh yes. Bit on the older side of life here so I know that pain...haha. Once it's done I will say it's all worth it. Just think about drainage. One place I really rushed and messed up for sure. Keeps the track down for days after a rain over hours. Appreciate it and enjoy the build my friend.
@VINTAGE BACKYARD RC Thanks for the advice mate. I might have to consider putting in a French drain. I could see me having some problems in the rainy season. Cheers mate 👍
Don’t know how to search through comment, so please forgive…. What are the outside dimensions of your layout? I just got my first car and am learning to drive “training” mode in my backyard layout that is 25 x 35 with 5’ lanes.
This video was absolutely stunning! I’ve been nervous on trying to attempt this and now I’m definitely ready. Only wanting it big enough to run 2-3 cars/trucks up to 1/10 scale maybe. What program did you use to do the designing? And is there a designer app that I could use on my iPad?
Thank you so much! I use Google sketch up. It's a free program and very easy to use. We can run two on our track but three would be a bit tight. I would shoot for maybe 8 foot wide lanes minimum. Enjoy the build and good luck my friend!
