Ray Kurzweil welcomes Richard Dawkins to the Talks at Google program.
With the 2006 publication of The God Delusion, the name Richard Dawkins became a byword for ruthless skepticism and "brilliant, impassioned, articulate, impolite" debate (San Francisco Chronicle). His first memoir offers a more personal view. His first book, The Selfish Gene, caused a seismic shift in the study of biology by proffering the gene-centered view of evolution. It was also in this book that Dawkins coined the term meme, a unit of cultural evolution, which has itself become a mainstay in contemporary culture.
In An Appetite for Wonder, Richard Dawkins shares a rare view into his early life, his intellectual awakening at Oxford, and his path to writing The Selfish Gene. He paints a vivid picture of his idyllic childhood in colonial Africa, peppered with sketches of his colorful ancestors, charming parents, and the peculiarities of colonial life right after World War II. At boarding school, despite a near-religious encounter with an Elvis record, he began his career as a skeptic by refusing to kneel for prayer in chapel. Despite some inspired teaching throughout primary and secondary school, it was only when he got to Oxford that his intellectual curiosity took full flight.

He may be controversial, veering at times into stridency, sometimes a bit elitist, arguably showing less sensitivity for the beliefs of the less sophisticated. Whatever your convictions may be, there is no denying the fact that he remains a colossal figure in modern science and an intellect of the highest order.

When you consider that this man wrote the Selfish Gene when he was 35, and compare that to what most of us accomplish in the first 35 years of our lives, you begin to realize how far out of our leagues he really is. And then came one book after another. And what a fantastic teacher he was and still is - just look up the Royal Society lectures. I am thankful to modern technology and the internet that I and my children will have access to his work and talks for years to come. Thankfully, once it is out on the internet, it is out for good. Burning books worked in the middle ages. They can't do that to electrons.

@bshrati 10 лет назад
I'm so sorry that don't know how to explain to you friends...you know...let put in this way...happiness in his field is not the same as happiness in his life. The evidence is in your feeling friends. Observe it, in the deepest place in your feeling, find the quiet place for a while you will feel it. It's not religion brothers, it's Science of Mind cause we can prove it. If you don't accept the existing of feeling please touch your face with your hand, do you feel it? The Mind Science is as simple as every one can prove it easily. I don't know what you mean by the word "religion" the word that tears human apart. I don't think that it is "religion" in my understanding, so I avoid using this word. The Mind Science is the study of our feelings which is the same no matter who they are: western, eastern, or between, they all have the same feeling. When sorrow happening they feel the same, it's the truth and never change since human appeared on earth. Happiness of Dr.Dawkins happen when he see, hear, smell, taste, and touch things favor to him, but there is happiness with out this five senses that longevity and sustainability. The happiness he got is a temporal pleasure. Science of Matter is not the only Science for human, there is the other side of Science, if you accepted that life comprise of body and feeling, so the Science of Mind should be part of the Sciences. I don't expect and convince you to believe, I's not the methods I keen, reasoning, I just want you to test it by feel it, if you don't feel it, so you are thing Dr.Dawkins called "The Selfish Gene" you are not the human, you are only machine learn to think. The Mind Science is not for you. Sorry robot friends, but we still love you brothers, even you don't feel love. Life is not mysterious entity, it's simple, but greed in power of machine man make it so. Good bye friend, thank you for your comments.

Charles Carz Well...I don't think three times marriage before sixty is the good evidence for happiness and peace, it's the evidence of pleasure, temporal happiness but longevity turmoil. He dare to give a word even he know that he will be stroked back by his fan clubs. However, please for give me. I have never seen any point at wich Professor Dawkins failed to take into account any evidence provided by the other side. If you consider feelings and visions as evidence then you don't apply the scientific method. Apart from irrational stories and personal feelings I have never seen Richard Dawkins flinch from directly answering any fact that was in any ration al way grounded on reality, so who is doing propaganda here? Mr Nehal you do. Asking people to face the world at truth value and to put their received teachings into question when they contradict logic, reason and scientific observations is not propaganda it is progress and the very scientific method which you pervert for your own propaganda. If you fail to understand the scientific method and the fact that any real scientist it eager to prove every single one of his and his fellow scientist theory wrong at the risk of having to completely reshape our understanding of the universe, don't try to use it as a tool for the propaganda of an absolutely biased faith alternative that insist on curbing evidence to its doctrine rather than the other way around.

really? "sacrifice their happiness seeking reason of truth"? That is very unlikely.... do lawyer solely spend their life in courts?.... do working class citizens only spend time in factories?,,, or do scientist have a productive academic life, sharing knowledge, challenging young minds, educating people, have families, go dancing, celebrate birthdays, etc? and get amazed and get joy of what work they do... but that, for you, may not bring them happiness? @hughraphaeli
@hughraphaeli 11 лет назад
generally, in toto, he certainly talks a lot of pseudoscience. Labels and names are employed based on massive assumptions but little objective evidence. Speculation is not science in itself. He also likes to belittle those who offer contrary arguments with slurs and insults. Darkins is a man with a very over-bloated self-image. His "God delusion" leaves a lot to be desired as it has precious little empirical evidence in it.
@biggbrattz
@biggbrattz 11 лет назад
Never seen Dawkins belittle any one who presents a real argument that represents actual work on an actual hypothesis with some empirical data for evaluation. Never. I challenge you to point me to a single instance of it. What Dawkins does ridicule are those who make unsubstantiated assertions & outright false statements...he doesn't like liars & bull****ers. Me neither. Also, do not conflate confidence earned as a result of hard work & knowledge, with "over-bloated self-image". Dawkins hard line comes from the former, NOT the latter!! The world is full of people who are all too eager to assert things that do not have the slightest connection to reality & who seldom make any kind of evaluation of the nonsense they are positing...like someone who has never used a computer trying to tell Bill Gates how to conduct his software research. Such people deserve ridicule for their ill-considered words & anger for wasting peoples time bcz THEY were unwilling or too lazy to do the work. They simply must learn to think about what they say before making fools of themselves by boldly asserting unsubstantiated nonsense. btw 911 taught many people about the dangers of believing nonsense. It also taught the rest of us to be a lot less tolerant of those who adhere to any such faith based belief system. Time for god to show up HIMSELF...like they SAY he used to. Until then, its time for religious "leaders" to STFU. They do not speak truth & they do nothing to help the human race grow or progress. They DO do a great deal to make things worse.

fitzy098 Rave on. Chopra is talking giberish...you just haven't figured that out yet. Common ...listen to him and tell me you actually understand and agree with what he says...."quantum this, quantum that" ...it's a complete con. There is a clip somewhere in which Dawkins gets Chopra to admit that his "quantum" references are "metaphorical" ...in other words, he's talking shit. Dawkins refers to Chopra's nonsense as "word salad" THAT, is right on the money. When Dawkins speaks, his words carry the weight of solid science. If you cannot recognize the difference between deep knowledge and "word salad", then you lack understanding.

most humans believe is some fairy tail or another, including dawkins, in fact everybody's worldview requires faith of some sort. Dawkins could have pushed science and specifically genetics for which he was educated, but in his arrogance he assumed he understood philosophy and theology, or because he couldn't understand then he thought they were bunk, and when he went in the ring with intellectual giants who were well schooled In philosophy and theology, like Craig and Lenox, he was crushed and embarrassed, and exposed his ignorance to the subjects he so arrogantly thought he could dismiss. Dawkins has now been pushed aside, his books were panned by most of his peers and he no longer taken seriously by scholars or academics.

Every field of science is different. Your space science with the big bang theory is actually a part of the christian religion and has nothing to do with science. They only call it science. If you want to learn about real space science, you go to my channel. I already found the answer. The universe did not have a beginning. It is limitless and exists without a beginning. I published my work in science language. On my channel you find the theoretical proof. It's not for beginners. But if you're well educated you may understand. The big bang theory only supports the christian religion, because of the "beginning" in the theory. This is the only reason why the theory is so popular. It has nothing to do with facts or science. They only try to delude you into christianity.

I recently posted the following statement on a Dawkins’s website “Colonialism has aways been with us in some form. Without it we would not have any of the many nation states that make up the world, nor the civilisation that we take so much for granted in our lives”. I thought that was a complexly logical conclusion to say, but Richard replied: " What is so good about having 'Nations'? We have One World, One Life and One desire - to live the most healthy, prosperous, and peaceful lives we can - why do we need so many ways to divide our One Species? I would say that this is an extension of the ‘John Lennon’ “Imagine” nonsense, which is ok if people want to believe it, but for someone who lectures on the accreditation of scientific knowledge it demonstrates a delving into a fairyland that Richard always attributes to religious thinking?

An ’Upside’ of Atheism. A question sometimes asked, by people probing the motivation of Atheists is : Why, if as they claim, they care enough to want to bring “truth” to misguided followers of religion, yet their caring is not enough to involve them charitable work? Such work is almost exclusively left to people of religious persuasion? However, there may be a facet to Atheism which seems to have escaped the reasoning of Atheist, in their public debates, defending the Atheist position? It is this: Setting aside the Charlatans who pretend Atheism as a convenient way of being important, there is something noble about Atheists who are sincere in what they believe, yet still do good works, knowing that there can be no spiritual rewards for what they do, as they do not believe in anything….

What can account for the amazing staying power of religion? Why, exactly, won’t God go away? Most secular thinkers believe that religion is an entirely psychological invention-born out of confusion and fear-to help us cope with the struggles of living and comfort us in the face of the terrible certainty that we will die. But Andrew and Eugene d’Aquili offer a new explanation, at once profoundly simple and scientifically precise: the religious impulse is rooted in the biology of the human brain. Andrew and Eugene base this revolutionary conclusion on a long-term investigation of brain function and behavior as well as studies they conducted using high-tech imaging techniques to peer into the brains of meditating Buddhists and Franciscan nuns at prayer. What they discovered was that intensely focused spiritual contemplation triggers an alteration in the activity of the brain that leads one to perceive transcendent religious experiences as solid, tangible reality. In other words, the sensation that Buddhists call “oneness with the universe” and the Franciscans attribute to the palpable presence of God is not a delusion, or subjective psychology, or simple wishful thinking. The inescapable conclusion is that God seems to be hard-wired into the human brain.

to me its simple; sexual lust, like all physiological functions have evolved for a set purpose. I don't think religious beliefs have evolved at all for any useful purpose. Apart from the same way wolves have evolved to benefit from pack behaviour. Or a tribal group collective. To me religion is probably a derivative of this but redundant. we can all agree sexual lust is useful in any species (think of the panda).

Its interesting to Wonder the what if that could have been if history was slightly different but irrelevant. If Hitler would have been born in a different social context he would have very likely been a painter. But without WW2 Wernher Von Braun wouldnt have migrated to american and allow us to send a man on the Moon. It is more relevant to focus on the here and now. More importantly, we should focus on our goals as humanity as a whole. Tolerance unites us and discord divides us. Focusing on the pass brings discord. The conflicts that last for many generations in the middle east is the best exemple (isn't it odd that the middle east is always a good exemple of the worst way to do everything =P ). Basically, if humanity insist on being divided, it will eventually fall. Yet, on a evolution stand point, if humanity destroys itself it will leave room for an other organism to thrive.

(Part 6) of vision. It is no more possible to describe cosmic consciousness (God) to a committed materialist than it is to explain compassion to a sociopath. My personal theory for this phenomenon is that there is some type of chromosomal anomaly or defective gene which makes some types of reality inaccessible to such individuals. I am certain that SCIENCE will eventually prove this !

If a group of children's alphabet blocks were observed on a table arranged in such a fashion as to create a word, one could assume that would be evidence of an external intelligence that arranged the blocks to create that word. However, an Evolutionist would say that this arrangement is result of an undeniable fact that no external intelligence was required at all.

Tom Adamson Tom, Richard Dawkins talks about exactly the same thing as the child arranging an alphabet but in a different analogy, he says if a monkey bashes on a keyboard, what are the chances he might get a quote by Shakespeare right? He does the math, and the odds is an extremely large number, making natural selection impossible if that were the case, so how does it work? He describes natural selection as a faulty lock code where you are rewarded for guessing at least 1 number right. Suppose you have a lock code that consists of 3 numbers. Chances you might get it right is 1 out of 1000 tries. Whereas if you hear a tick every time you get a number right, chances you might get the right number would be 1 out of 30 tries, because you only have to try 10 numbers (9 numbers including the zero) on each code, multiply the same number by 3 to get the number of tries you need for 3 codes. The same goes to the monkey bashing on a keyboard, if the computer only selects the letters the monkey types if it is right, then it will end up typing the right code. Though a computer is intelligent, and it knows what the answer is, natural selection is 'blind' to the future, hence his book's name: The Blind Watchmaker. He even has a documentary by the same name, just look it up on RU-vid and you'll find it. Watch that documentary if you want to understand how natural selection can still create complex beings even though it's 'blind'. He explains it very clearly.

Every question favors theism in the beginning. Then we learn to relate things we don't understand to things we do understand, and we find out our question can be answered by science. The atheists have reached a point where this has happened so many thousands of times that they abandoned the theistic idea. If you follow the cable science channels there are now a number of hypotheses suggesting the creation of the universe is part of something bigger and natural.

While that's a snarky way to put it, I don't think it's very prudent to say that non-belief in gods enables a person to have their own worldviews. Part of what atheists try to tell theists is that you don't -need- a belief in a god to have a worldview. That everyone has their own worldview regardless of what they believe in, and that usually one's worldview -informs- their ascribed beliefs. Of course, religious dogma often hampers and restricts the expansion or alteration of your worldview.

I'm not saying it actually is woo. Great discipline can lead to surprising feats, which is why I pointed vaguely to martial artists. I just don't agree to calling these sorts of things and the having the ability and discipline "inner energy", especially when "energy" has a specific meaning, and energy really doesn't have anything to do with it. I don't agree that it's something that you would tap into either, really. It isn't "tapping into ANS", it's controlling things that the ANS controls.
@Vulcapyro
@Vulcapyro 11 лет назад
Just call it concentration and focus if that's what you mean. "Inner energy" doesn't mean anything as far as you've said and reeks of woo. Even martial artists using terms and concepts from Buddhism and other various practices unsupported by science realize that regardless of their phrasing, there is often a very real phenomenon behind their words that has explanations grounded in reality and isn't just throwing around special terms.

The guy at 33:03 should have been answered properly by Dawkins, "Do you think if I had a sex change that would fix the problem?" It's a fact that statistically women are drawn to their biological instinct to be the mother and emotional caretaker instead of the hunter/breadwinner. There is a clear biological trend in this regards with respect to the career fields women chose besides men, so I think this is an unfair question to pin a male dominance hierarchy on a person as distinguished and authored as Dawkins. Dawkins just said what the guy wanted to hear (but touched on the lack of this discrimination briefly), because if he gave an honest critique, the left would go insane thinking that he was a misogynistic bigot for having a slightly different opinion. Shall I be concerned as a male that Hillary Clinton went to college, and that there are more women going to college and getting educated than men? No? Even with this advantage, the data shows it is more along the lines of a women's choice of employment rather than a systematic disenfranchisement of women by the "oppressive male", a concept just as imaginary as the god of the Bible, (although the left prays to the "oppressive male" daily to excuse taking responsibility for their actions, while the right does so with their Jesus). A basic probability and statistics class will tell you that there are lurking factors. Hell, this is even in college generals! Do people know nothing of scientific principle?

Utterly wrong. Today we know a lot of things and for what we know we get a glimpse of what we don't know: That starts our search for the things we don't know. Before bullying our knowledge remind yourself that up to Hubble we believed for centuries that the milky way is the intire universe! Now we know there is something out there, making up about 25% of the universe. Just because we use a placeholder and call it dark matter and just because we can't measure it directly, that doesen't mean it's not there. The available amount of information is signifficantly higher than our ability to percieve and to understand it. Does this mean we should stop asking questions, and lay back because we will never know or understand everything? I don't think so. I rather think this would be a silly idea!

DARWIN-"Origin" 1 billionth second before 1st life the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics allowed NO!!! "NUMEROUS, SUCCESSIVE, SLIGHT MODIFICATION". There's one "scientist" who's a LONG way from being "made". "Thermodynamics is the one universal theory I'm certain will never be overthrown." Albert Einstein NEWS!!! IT HAS NOT BEEN!!!! More descriptive, prescriptive, predictive than anything Darwin dreamed. CHARLES DARWIN NEVER claimed "natural selection" non-life from life. "3rd day plant seed-5th day marine animals to birds-6th day terrestrials to man." Genesis 1--FIRST PAGE PERFECT evolutionary paradigm: progressivity-periodicity-staging. Clarence Darrow AND WJ Bryan BOTH stipulated days as epochs @ Scopes trial. NO OTHER "creation myth" REMOTELY accommodates "evolution". Judeo/Christianity has NO problem with Darwin. Dawkins' claim is for ABIOGENESIS....PERIOD!! CRAIG VENTER!! & Nobel biologist Lee Hartwell BOTH said to Dawkins face: "We'll never know life's origin." VENTER: "It's not feasible we'll contrive life." (ASU--"The Great Questions; What Is life") Dawkins doesn't pull it out of thin air. Wow, you are amazingly stupid. All Dawkins meant was that, as an atheist, once Darwin presented his work....that we now had an intellectual answer for how the diversity of life exists. That's it, plain and simple. Also, to be atheist does not implicitly mean yo must accept abiogenesis. Transpermia is also another valid hypothesis for how life started on Earth. Also, thermodynamics has absolutely nothing to do with evolution or abiogenesis. You re trying to equate complex objects (plan parts) with complex chemistry (natural reproduction of organic compounds). By the way, you should probably try doing some research on how RNA (the building block for DNA) has been shown to be able to spontaneously generate it's self. Point being, there is supporting evidence for abiogenesis. Admittedly, it's still minimal but that's why it's still a hypothesis and not a theory. There's absolutely 0 to support the "god did it" bull shit you're trying to spew. Go read a book and learn something.

It's funny how the religious always paint Dawkins as a hateful militant atheist, implying (or just saying) he is as bad as any religious leader that feeds his flock ignorant and hateful ideas. It's funny how they frame atheism as "just another religion" because they know they have been taught to unquestioningly follow what "god" says, so they think it an insult when they place us in the same circle as them. Listen, man. Don't try to redefine something which is already defined, to suit your apparent need for feelings of supremacy. Atheism is the absence of belief in deities. We can't prove that negative as everyone knows, so don't try to make it sound like that's what atheism tries to do. Some atheists might assume the position that gods don't exist, like many people every day assume the position that our universe does. A position from sufficient evidence (or lack thereof) is not religious dogma.

You can justifiably and accurately assert that there is insufficient evidence to establish the reality of my consciousness. Yet there is a perspective from which this intrinsically unprovable idea reveals itself not just to be true but undeniably self-evidently true. That perspective is beyond the scope of any science to obtain. It is my perspective and my claim. Are you saying I have a burden of proof when claiming that I am conscious? How will the first AI prove its consciousness to you?
@MarkLucasProductions
@MarkLucasProductions 11 лет назад
I've not read the other comments but I would answer that of course religious indoctrination won't make you an especially good person however what of the notion that being an intrinsically good person 'tends' one toward religion more so than being an intrinsically bad person? This is the point worth most to be explored. I am a nonbeliever but I'm drawn to spiritual ideas in virtue of my nature - a nature that others, though not especially I, regard to be essentially good.

The same is true with your god. A deist god, one who created the universe and then left, having nothing to do with it ever again, is still very, very unlikely, but more difficult to disprove than any of the common monotheistic gods. These gods are always being credited for doing things. Those things can be dis-proven making god more and more unlikely. Science has left very little for god to have done and his domain is getting smaller all the time.

I am under burden to provide proof of my celestial teapot as you can never disprove that it is there. It is too small to see with telescopes, and moves in mysterious ways. However, because you cannot explicitly disprove the teapot does not make the probability of it's existence 50/50. Surely, with even a basic education you can shade the probability of a self generating celestial teapot towards unlikely. And, the more information I give about the teapot, the more info you can disprove.
@LemonDawn1
@LemonDawn1 11 лет назад
Now you are just trying to be obtuse. Really, if you want to see where the burden of proof lies you can google it. There is no claim of disbelief in all goods. Only a lack of belief. I do not believe in unicorns either, yet in intelligent conversation I would not be asked to provide a proof for lack of belief in unicorns. However, should someone believe in unicorns they would most certainly have to provide proof to be taken seriously.

If you are a skeptic you will have heard of Bertrand Russell's teapot, in which case you will know that the burden of proof is on the believer to show that the thing he believes in does exist. Atheism is not the disbelief in all gods so much as it is the lack of belief in all gods. If you are Christian, you too lack belief in many gods (Zeus, Thor, Vishnu), for similar reasons (lack of any proof) atheists also do not believe in those god and we then go one further.

"inner energy" is just a scientific sounding woo-woo term that doesn't really mean anything. Not the same thing as concentration and focus.
