Happy Bird-day! To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Charlie Parker, I am sharing my analysis of one of his classic compositions, "Blues for Alice".
Here is Parker's own classic recording of the tune, please give it a listen:

Here is my lead sheet:

Listening to this song on Sax made me fall in love with Jazz. That was 25 years ago. Thanks for this video!

Thanks for the analysis Mark. Some great ideas to use in my own compositions.

Ah ah ah! You do the same thing I do when I go over some harmonic analisys... you sing what you spell, and not just the notes, but their quality too. Like "Minor thiiirrd..."! I do that too! 😅

Hi Marc! Great way to spend part of my Sunday afternoon! For me, at least-I'm a little geeky that way :) A couple of comments/questions: 1)Is there a way to notate "ghost" notes in MuseScore, maybe enclosing noteheads in parenthesis? That might make it a little easier to follow when you're talking about the ghost notes in m. 5 and 10. 2) The in m.8 should have an accidental next to it if you're going to spell it B-natural. Makes more sense to spell it as a Cb, I think. 3) Loved your explanation of the chain of tritone subs leading up to m.9! Great stuff-very enlightening!

Actually, in the Charlie Parker Omnibook, the note in question in m.8 is notated Bb--so he's emphasizing the 13th over a Db7 chord? Yeesh, I give up :)

The Omnibook doesn’t use key signatures, but I do :-). It’s a Bb indeed, so we’re both right! As for ghost notes, yes, I could make the notehead a cross. But I prefer not to when transcribing lead sheets. I strongly suspect Charlie Parker didn’t write ghost notes in his own lead sheet, it just sort of happened naturally when playing. If it was a solo transcription, then I’d be more concerned with reproducing what I’m actually hearing, but for a lead sheet I want to reproduce what I think they were reading from.

Marc, @21:30, in measure 2, you point out that the melody is a b9. I know that it is common to simply write the chord as an A7, but, if you were actually playing the piano with a sax player on melody, would you also play the b9? I play jazz guitar and I'm often puzzled as to why a jazz guitarist will call it an A7 but actually play the Ab9. If I wanted to play a solo guitar version [chord melody] I would obviously want to play the A7b9. How do you deal with the chord variations when comping on piano? thanks, Mark

Good question! Jazz players routinely fill in these extensions and alterations based on our knowledge, ear, and experience. So we almost never play a plain A7 - we decide for ourselves how we want to enhance it. Sometimes we do take the trouble to notate specific suggestions in the lead sheet, but often we don’t bother. In this case, one should know to use b9 for the reasons I describe.
