NOTE: The correct dates for the European Tour of 1971 are May 3rd thru August 8th 1971. I accidentally left the ones for the Ireland & UK Tour in there. Thanks!

Thanks so much! I recommend you checking out the 1971 shows after for reference. I didn't talk about the other songs from their setlist because this is a documentary on IV...but man, it's so cool to revisit these shows, the energy and element of surprise before dragon suits and symbols took over...i love it!

These are the best most well researched videos on led zeppelin ever made- you should be getting commissioned by Jimmy Page to do a full blown 6 hour documentary on the band- it would be the best music documentary ever made if you had that kinda budget

What can I say Jose? Even a staunch, old Zep-head like me still learns something new from your extensive digging. This really was a “sweet spot” in their time. Robert’s voice could kill any insect in the room and the rest of the group were on absolute fire. There’s no way a touring tempo like this could last too long. Especially with top-flight performances such as they were turning in nightly. That voice was bound to decline. We all wish it could’ve lasted longer but…competing with tremendous stage volume night after night, the hustle of traveling, no sleep, running ragged, a money hounding manager pushing and pushing them and after party nondescripts all worked against Robert’s precious vocal range. He fried his voice for us, the fans. I’m forever grateful that we got what we got. Everything changes though and usually too quickly than we like.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories

L.B!!! hey man what's happening. I agree the touring frenzy of 1971 was not sustainable and to think this went full force until October...1972. I think because of P.A design at the time, many singers overplayed their cards, you wish sound design was better right? The travelling is what makes me just stare at the touring maps i make...to understand the dimensions and movement. You're right, he fried his voice for the fans, that makes him a viking! Thank you very much for watching!

I knew that for Led Zeppelin III that there were a visit to Hedley Grange, but I don't know how much recording was actually done there. Led Zeppelin IV I thought that more recording was done there than they actually did. It looks like they did more recording at Island Studios than I thought.

'Down By The Seaside' has that special feel for me and now it makes sense that it was recorded during the IV sessions. It has the same vibe of 'Stairway' but a little more buoyant sounding with Jimmy's watery sounding guitar but still has the more serious sounding "See how they run" middle movement that provides the darkness contrast. Jimmy's "Light and Shade" that provides conflict and resolution rather like a very well written literary arc except musically.

Never realised just how continuous the Zep III and Zep IV albums/tours were. You’ve done a fantastic job in bringing the making of the album to life and I’m really keen to play the Zep IV companion disc tonight. Your dissection of Stairway is fantastic and makes it almost a review of the first four albums in a single song. Well done again Jose.

Thank you very much Paul. The continuity of III and IV, the more you look into them they are brother albums. Hard to separate them right? Hope you enjoy the companion disc for IV, it's a great experience with headphones for sure. I like the concept of Stairway a sum of their first four albums, they truly reached the top and i am not downplaying their latter years, everything was just nurtured from III and IV! That's why i love In Through the Out Door so much, it was REALLY NEW!

Great vid! It must have been such an interesting time for Zeppelin to be touring around and playing Stairway night after night to crowds that had never heard it before. What a feeling that would have been to experience that song live for the first time without knowing anything about it.

BTW a fantastic concert. Naturally a strong memory from the excited 16-year old but as there are some (not great in sound quality but...) bootleg clips on YT I can now as a 68 year old know for sure that the band was ever so tight and presented us a marvelous show. Perfect performance in all ways. I've heard it was the only concert ever they played Four Sticks on stage. Perhaps true? And Rock and Roll was introduces as 'There´s been a long time' ;)

Dave!!! Hello. Man the picture of the trashed stage was a shocker. They saved the string instruments, everything else was lost. Robert helped to carry out the 12 string actually. Too bad this happened, the show was very good. 1971 overall, you can't go wrong, but 1970 remains my favorite..!

Another excellent episode! I didn't know they only played Four Sticks live twice, I'm wondering if it's because of its difficulty or for other reasons. The song has always reminded me of a fever dream. As for Stairway, your "less is more" approach to talking about it is quite apt, considering the words that have been spilled about the song over the years. I have heard the solos that Jimmy laid down for the song, he definitely chose the best one for the album IMO. Looking forward to next episode!
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories 6 месяцев назад
A fever dream and Four Sticks, makes sense! The song is hard to play from an arrangement POV. You can get the beat and riff going, but it the energy is tricky. It can fool you into thinking harder is better. Thank you for thinking my take on Stairway was good, trust me, this was the toughest part of the script because yeah, i didn't wanna repeat what magazines have been saying for years hehe. Jimmy was on fire on the solo, a mad man!

I read where they found the original picture of the sky and his name was Len Long. Found out he was a Thatcher which means he fixed roofs. That's the only thing I heard about I didn't hear anything about any tarot card

Nothing to do with the actual Tarot, just an image of an old timer that they found appealing. An interpretation of the Tarot, sure, but not directly.

Hey Paul! So the guy on the intro is a close up of Lot Longyear, the man on the cover whose original photograph was discovered recently. Always a pleasure to provide high quality entertainment here on RU-vid!

Muy interesante todo el desarrollo de ése disco! Four Sticks se nota que es uno de ésos temas que sólo sirvieron en Studio....
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories 6 месяцев назад
@christiancazabonne

Per the liner notes to the companion disc, Stairway was recorded Dec 5, 1970. Doubt it was done in 1971. (with exception of overdubs)

Correct. I checked the liner notes but if we look at the rehearsals and production, something had to be done in 1971 :)

Ultimately in my opinion..Stairway may have been their ultimate commercial success. But they weren't looking for it..Page wasn't..Peter Grant wasn't it If one looks closely..and listens..with a soft ear..Achilles was constructed from Jimmy listening to Dazed for many tours..Tangents Within Framework..this is why I consider Presence Page's masterpiece..it may have been a solo album..no one else had material..Page and his engineer pulled it off..in 2 fucking weeks? Heroin is not a good thing..their best..most brutal album amongst total discord..they pulled it off!!!

Have never understood your fascination with ittod..maybe it was your time..after seeing Zep in 77..this album was a weak blimp and seemed like outakes to me..I can remember FM stations debuting that album when it came out..Besides the opener..In The Evening..and Carouselambra..the whole lp was ultimately weak..it was awful..we were all dissapointed when it came out..next to Houses..their worst effort imo
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories

The backstory and human side to ITTOD contributed to my fascination. It is the band that wanted to conquer the 80s with a new sound. From a production and composition stand point, it's the most innovative record since ZEPP 3. I'm not trying to convince you to like it of course, i'm just saying, the sounds themselves are captivating if seen through the right lens! Thank YOU for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4 of 4 coming up!
