JCM - I never thought of it myself, but you hit it right on the head when you said ELP lacked in the songwriting department. For Love Beach, I never thought it was so much bad musically (though the lyrics are mainly awful), just boring. I tell kids to get Pictures At An Exhibition, Trilogy and Welcome Back.

It's not a " chromatic " riff..I think chromatic 1/2 step after 1/2 step. Achilles

I remember Jimmy Page was so loaded he could hardly stand up. If I remember correctly it was a really short show and everybody was pissed off. I had actually bought a ticket the year before but the show got cancelled due to Robert Plant’s car accident. I was really disappointed with their performance.

All those acts are all so white though. I'm a white dude I feel I can say that and not offend myself. I'm just pointing out there was little in way of diversity in ethnicity then.

Actually if you do some research on why other diversity groups were not represented you would be surprised to learn who keep them away from these type of concerts. One of the things i love about Led Zeppelin is they never got into politics like many phony rockstars who acted as if they truly cared on changing the world. Politics and religion ruin everything :)

Fun fact: The tour plane was actually a Boeing 720. United ordered this Boeing plane after ordering DC-8s snd persuaded Boeing to designate it differently from the 707. It WAS an outgrowth of the 707 but airline politics of the day won out and the Boeing 720 was created. 154 were eventually built for airlines worldwide. Fact check me if you doubt me.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Час назад
I believe you and this is a great topic. Most references i've seen through the years state this as a 707. So was it a custom 707 that ended up being a 720?
@aeromoe
@aeromoe 26 минут назад
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories United Airlines didn't want to be seen as "back pedaling" by ordering competing 707s after already ordering DC-8s. At that time (late 50s) these were the first long-range (coast-to-coast) jet airliners being offered by sale in the USA and competition for orders was very fierce. Airlines wanted to replace their maintenance-heavy piston-engined airliners with these new-fangled jet airliners. Boeing was ahead of Douglas in the race to the jet age regarding airplane availability and sales. Fascinating chapter in commercial aviation history. United was looking for a shorter-range airplane to also replace piston-engined airliners in shorter-range service to supplement the forthcoming DC-8s. The Boeing model that became the 720 was originally the 707-020...a slightly smaller, lighter weight version of the available 707-120. It was still being developed. Boeing's other eventual 707 models were the -220, -320 , and -420. Simply put, differing in engine choice, length, and flying range. The "20" designation was Boeing's internal designation and was replaced by the 2-digit customer code. So 21=Pan Am, 22=United, 23=American, etc. Boeing capitulated to United and the 707-020 became the 720-020. The specific airframe in question was part of the United Airlines order and was designated a 720-022. It's FAA registration (license plate) was N7224U...part of the 'vanity plate' sequence United reserved for their order: N7201U through N7229U. At least one source says N7201U...photo proof exists it was N7224U. In the 20-teens there was actually a plastic model kit available of this tour aircraft along with other versions for Elton John and the Bee Gees. They were relatively expensive ($40) maybe...wish I had picked one up. Still available online, search "Roden Boeing 720"...the kits are out there. At least you can see photos of the kits that were available.

THis is indeed not about "the making of in through the out door", but instead about the year 1980 and LZ's last tour - in Europe - with John Bonham. Great video...misleading title.

Bonham's rolls in Carouselambra are breathtaking. I felt he was a bit sloppy on some of ITTOD but his overall finesse was really improving. Had he lived I have always felt that he would have gone possibly more in the direction of Jeff Porcaro and Bernard Purdie....more finesse, more grace notes, more groove(even more than he had already...) BTW, Jason Bonham has done a wonderful job honoring his dad in so many musical ways.😊

This was interesting. All the mentioning you do of the Presence cover (especially its origin inside Earl's Court at a boat show, explaining why I always thought the photo felt like some sort of make-believe world) have you ever seen the bootleg album Persistence? It's a one-off take on Presence. One other Zeppelin/Genesis link is --- when Phil Collins drummed on Plant's '83 Principle of Moments tour, he also brought the Genesis lighting rig trusses with him, which were state of the art at the time. Yep, mmm-hmm.

Omg, he's going through 40 year-old flight manifests again! And he knows terminal three is still under construction since January of that year. Wait, this time he even knows how long the limo drive was! 9 minutes? Well that's prolly because they hit an extra red light because 'Hinton was driving, which immediately received one back of the head slap from Bonzo before he reclined again, relaxing to Bron-y-aur playing on the rear shelf speakers by his ears. tee hee. You're the best, JCM.

Wow, imagine the kind of stuff Zeppelin might've done if they'd continued on. I can imagine them doing an orchestral album or something like that. The avant garde stuff Jonesy made could've been worked into the middle section of Dazed and Confused.

do you have any footage archive of zeps Oakland show saturday july 23, 1977? i was there up front center day on the green. i would like to see what you have for their songlist because they played 4 hours plus 1/2 hour straight encore. i know what the first 3 songs were definitely, and the song after the encore..but all the books and songlists for that day are wrong i gaurantee you. Plant wore a blue tshirt with white letters 'Nurses Do It Better' kinda cheesy and page wore the black dragon outfit, jones and bonham were wearing like blue gym workout sweat jackets.. the songlists you showed here for new york and los angeles i would have to add 4 more songs on there to reflect the oakland songlist, why they played 4 hours.. i know i clocked it but didnt write down the set list...i was too wonderfully mesmerized and loving it

When I heard Led Zeppelin was going to put out an album and do a tour I GOT SO EXCITED! Then I heard it was a Page/Plant only project with no Jonsey in sight I decided I wanted nothing to do with that travesty. Jonsey is the reason I took up the bass guitar.

Just wondering, considering the time and the place, and how conservative Vienna was at the time and anchored in bourgeois traditions, whether there was some outrage in the city (influential circles, media) about the _scandal_ of having such a _bunch of wild youngsters_ making noise in such a noble venue. Strange if there wasn't, Vienna certainly not being like London.

Look I was around when that record came out and I think you may understand what that first Santana did to a 12 year old in 1970. Northeast Los Angeles at that time the Chicanos loved their Motown. And a persons musical world was shaped by radio and other people. PERIOD. My childhood was AM radio the Beatles and Motown, To this day I view Santana 3 at the best album of his whole catalog. Now within 3 years I discovered The Allman Bothers At Fillmore East. Now Tell little Brother that that record did not have just a bit of the Brothers in it. They played at Fillmore West during that time, I am not saying they copied, just influenced. And young man Willie Bobo's Spanish Grease is fucking Great . You seem like a sharp young man who knows his history, keep it up

Dont know whats going on with the comments disappearing, but someone was questioning my veracity concerning the "Squaring the Circle" documentary. For the record at approx. 1:06 of the documentary "Squaring the Circle," Aubrey "Po" Powell of Hipgnosis says "they" made EIGHT objects. 8. EDIT: Found out SS did make 1000, promo "objects" then "somebody" made 500 "replicas"...I am sure that MANY of these circulating "objects" are highly suspect.

Excelente video! 😂😂😂

When I was about 16 I went on a working roadtrip with my dad. I had 1 rule: I get to choose the music. By day 3 my classic country loving dad had become a. Zep fan. He asked me the name of that album. "In Through the Out Door." I said. He screwed up his face and said "What the hell?" I said "Why, what does that mean, because none of my friends know either?" "When I was in England for the war it was a slang term for putting it in the wrong hole." I guess that presense thing got into their heads. Like a Crowley hangover.

Sorry but your 'English friend' was not real. That's an AI voice. They don't need credit. They are Binary code. An it gives us older people uncanny Valley Vibes. I know you eventually do narrate these great documentaries so thanks for that as I just can not absorb information from an AI voice. It literally jars my brain so much it interferes with my concentration. Like my Brain is trying to solve a puzzle whilst listening to someone talk interesting facts. It garbles it up. My mind is trying to work out what is wrong because it KNOWS it is wrong. Oh your Guitar playing is outstanding. Kudos to all the work you have put in to these and your Guitar playing. I saw Zep in Baton Rouge, La for the 1977 tour. The show started one hour late because they got stuck in traffic, but I got there one hour late myself for the same reason so it all worked out. In the early 70's I lived right on Bourbon St. in the French Quarter where Zep liked to hang out. I remember seeing Jimmy Page and Robert Plant more than one time hanging out at the Royal Orleans Hotel street side bar.
