Really well-researched and entertainingly presented story about one of my favorite films that I worked on at Disney! I can say, that, "yes, for the most part, this all happened as told"! On a personal note, without this film, I would not have had the pleasure and honor of creating the character Kronk! For that, I will be forever grateful to Mark Dindal and Randy Fullmer. Thanks for a great show everyone!

I feel like New Groove was the Disney movie from an alternative timeline, from a universe where Disney (and animation in general) didn't have these incredibly dominant "studio brand image" expectations. This movie doesn't necessarily fit into the established Disney pantheon... but maybe it could have? That is, maybe we can imagine a world where Disney is smaller, maybe sees itself as a promoter of traditional animation, has more creative freedom, and helps realize unique, quirky, witty, and off-beat animation projects like this one. So the point is, this is the film that I most want to hear from those who worked on it. Thanks for posting! Every so often there's a tiny little ghost who speaks up in my heart, "maybe you could help make such a fun thing come into being!" Sounds like an amazing experience.

"Disney didn't know how to market the film." Oh they knew. They had just given up on 2D animation before the movie even came out. Both Eisner and Katzenberg had gone all in on live action and 3D animation. Which they cannibalized all their 2D films. I mean, they didn't even give the 2D films a chance. Giving them 5-10x less marketing. The low box office numbers is because of a lack of studio support. When they put more marketing behind movies like Antz and Bug's Life over Prince of Egypt and Lilo and Stitch...yeah. The fix was in.

This absolutely a valid point, but Antz and The Prince of Egypt weren't Disney productions
@PollenEye
@PollenEye 2 года назад
This is why it's frustrating when people say 2D American movies are dead because viewers lost interest. No, it's because the studios kept mishandling their films and animators because "CGI is the hot thing!!!" One of the reasons anime has become so popular is because it's able to scratch that 2D itch that most western animation hasn't been able to do in a long time. It looks like we're finding creative ways to incorporate traditional with CG in recent movies tho (Spiderverse and Bad Guys) and maybe that's how 2D movies will eventually make their comeback.
@maxis2k
@maxis2k 2 года назад
@@PollenEye Anime also fills multiple genre and demographic holes Hollywood gave up on. It's not just that anime is unique and foreign. But anime is producing shows with themes and tone like Hollywood used to in the 1980s and 1990s. You can find an anime that's similar to Batman: TAS or X-Men or Garfield. But you can't find any modern Hollywood shows that do that.
@PollenEye
@PollenEye 2 года назад
@@maxis2k That too. For the longest time, most cartoons were allowed to either be family friendly adventures or crude adult comedies. Anime studios always respected animation as a medium, not a genre. That's thankfully changing as well, at least for animated series...film is still kinda stuck in that gap. I can tell you why it failed. Because by the time it came out, the "average" movie goer, if there can be said to be such a thing, was done with Disney animation. There wasn't any anticipation over their projects anymore. Years later, when I heard New Grove was actually good, I was shocked, gave it a try, and was pleasantly surprised. Thats the sad thing about media like this.. A company sets itself up for failure, then blames the people given an impossible task for said failure, when the truth is, the workers did a great job. It was the corporation to blame.

When it comes down to it, it still is my favorite Disney movie. It's one that I could watch on repeat and never get tired of. The jokes were timeless and just the overall flow along with 4th wall breaking just made it mad fun. Sure, it doesn't have the weight like many other Disney movies but I think that's what made it special. It was just a buddy adventure with at least something learned at the end.

There were several films released at this point in Disney's history that the audience just wasn't prepared for, or for which Disney had pulled the marketing budget for, thus causing them to flop: The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis the Lost Empire, and Treasure Planet. And all three of them are favorites of mine, right up there alongside Mulan and Hercules. The Emperor's New Groove was the comedic relief to the darker, more serious undercurrents of Atlantis the Lost Empire and Treasure Planet. They are all fantastic and criminally underrated films and I end up recommending them to anyone who hasn't seen them. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

it’s crazy how disney keeps on ruining animators creatives process, due to money and time frames (which are valid, reorganizing and pushing stuff back and really hender the company) but it doesn’t help when you are a ANIMATION COMPANY and you get your money from making good films. i love this movie because this movie (and the road to el dorado) was the only movie that had any peruvian/bolivian representation!! it’s sad that the original director was going for that and disney just threw that all away. the incan culture has soo many fables and such great tails. i’m surprised disney nor pixar haven’t jumped on it yet! such great tales and stories could be told! definitely would’ve loved more peruvian/bolivian tunes in the movie. As interesting as Kingdom of the Sun sounds, I do believe they made the right decision in the end. The movie seems to be sugar coated a little bit with what might have been almost every time it's talked about. In reality, when really looking at it, it was a mess of story lines that didn't have enough to do with each other. Pacha and Manko wouldn't have much anything to do with each other after the beginning, Manko and his love interest not only wouldn't have been able to go much of anywhere as long as he was a llama, but also would have been almost completely disconnected from the rest of the film. Manco and Pacha would somehow have to get together again at some point and figure out how to turn him back which is another thing to juggle. Yzma, as much as I love the song, had no clear goal. She wanted to be young again but also wanted to raise a demon to destroy the sun, which is fine as long as they connect to each other but it seems they never really did. And finally, you would have to have Pacha connect to Yzma in some important way to drive the plot to the point of him lassoing the demon, not to mention his love interest and how she would fit into all of this. There's just too much and not enough time. There are 6 plot lines here: Pacha and Manco with the llama thing, Manco's love story, Pacha being the emperor, Pachas love story, Yzma wanting to reclaim her youth and beauty, and Yzma wanting to raise the dead and destroy the sun. There's just not enough to connect all these plots and keep the movie consistent. To make this work, I believe some serious stuff would need to change. Yzma would have to have her only purpose be revenge on the sun even though it wouldn't bring her youth back. Manco's love story just needs to be scrapped and replaced with him being in the palace to see how things run better without him (or something similar to improve him as a person) and to learn about Yzma's plans. He would need to try to warn Pacha about it which would mean needing to be human again. If we had Pacha figure out the llama was Manco they could figure out how to change him back and then Manco (now being able to speak again) could warn about Yzma. Pacha would then have to prepare to fight Yzma and lasso the demon and so on and so forth. Pacha's love story might still be able to fit but it would take a lot to make it work. This is just an idea and it might still be too much for one film, comment any other versions you think might work better. As long as Yzma gets her song back, I'm happy.

I adore The Emperor's New Groove. It is my favorite movie of all time. But the more I learn and think about the production of the movie, the more I realize how crappy it really was. I hope Disney decides to make The Kingdom of the Sun instead of remaking this masterpiece.
@ItWasAShtShow

Perhaps the production was a Sh*t Show, but that shouldn’t take away your enjoyment of it. It’s very much it’s own thing. Much like KotS would have been. Believe me, of the films we’ve covered on this channel, at least there wasn’t a major death or a ruthless backstabbing during its making. It was entirely just a creative change.

In my personal opinion, this was a case where the executives intervening to stop the director was actually FOR THE BETTER! Once Mark Dindal took over, they were relatively hands off and he basically got to do what he wanted so long as he met the deadline.

I was a child when this movie came out. My aunt got it on VHS and I watched it once and instantly fell in love. This movie stayed in the VHS to the point I would rewind it constantly spending days just watching the movie over and over again. Even as an adult this movie makes me laugh harder it is forever one of my favorite movies of all time.

I love that the writers goofed off during writing sessions, I'm sure they NEEDED to do that in order to discover some of the absolutely hysterical bits in the movie. Kronk doing the cricket sound against the wall, I just sit here and die laughing as I imagine the writers coming up with that sequence.

Emperor's New Groove is a fun film. The Road to El Dorado is the combination of comedy and epic story that it sounds like they originally wanted. It's a real shame The Road to El Dorado sequels never happened.

I honestly think that Disney not investing into the promotion of the movie damned it to bomb. People loved the movie back then, test screenings for the final version of the movie were apparently great! If Disney had promoted it more, and better, maybe ENG would've not bombed. That, and the fact that it released at a _very_ bad time for its success. Going against Jim Carrey is basically suicide. (moviecide?)

Disney does that a lot - Atlantis, Treasure Planet? Great movies that are all underrated because Disney wasn't interested in them. They boycotted the whole thing themselves with bad advertisements and a lack of merchandise. Those movies had the potential to keep Disney on top. And they could have worked with "The sunrise kingdom" if they had committed to it. The same goes for Frozen and the sequel, where they focus again on what makes the money instead of making a culturally appropriate movie. While the results are not bad, they could have been better - and while the emperors groove is fun, I would have loved to see the original movie
@lpfan4491
@lpfan4491 2 года назад
@@z2yn Oh yes, the tragic tale of how they sabotaged Treasure Planet so much that the sequel never got further than the drafts. I'm still glad that Atlantis at least got its sequel and proper conclusion, even if it was downscaled from a full series to one of these weird disney compilation-movies.

The night I saw Emperors New Groove in the theatre has become an indelible memory for me. It’s a long story, but the short version was that I was at the mall with friends in college. We wanted to go see a movie since the good theatre was at the mall. The majority voted for ENG, I reluctantly went with them with the thought, ugh another Disney movie, with princesses and singing like the movies my little sister liked. I came out a fan. It’s easily number one in my top ten animated films. And it has remained there for 20 plus years.
