Many Filipino students are perplexed as to why they are still required to study the life and works of Jose Rizal in college, despite having studied his biography and two novels in high school. They believe it will be a waste of their time because it will simply be a repetition of what they have already learned. They had no idea that they were required by law to study Jose Rizal's life and works not only in high school but also in college, and they had no idea what this law had gone through in order to be passed and approved.
The Republic Act 1425 (R.A. 1425), also known as the Rizal Law, was passed on June 12, 1956, Philippine Independence Day. It is an act to “include courses on the life, works, and writings of Jose Rizal, particularly his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, in the curricula of all public and private schools, colleges, and universities.” Authorizing its printing and distribution, as well as other uses.”
